Snowflake Tools 2026 guide by Brolly Academy

Quick answer

Snowflake tools are the interfaces, clients, libraries and partner products you use to load, transform, query, secure and report on data in Snowflake, from Snowflake's own Snowsight, Snowflake CLI and Snowpark to third-party tools such as dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, Informatica, Tableau and Power BI. Snowflake itself is a cloud data platform, not a single tool. Around it sits a toolchain with clear layers: ingestion, transformation, orchestration, BI, DevOps and monitoring. In the 14 Snowflake job descriptions we read on 25 October 2026, SQL appeared in all of them, while dbt and Python each appeared in 9.

  • Work in Snowflake: Snowsight (web UI), Snowflake CLI, SnowSQL (legacy), Notebooks, VS Code extension
  • Build on Snowflake: drivers and connectors, Snowpark, Streamlit in Snowflake, Cortex AI tools
  • Load data: COPY INTO, Snowpipe, Snowpipe Streaming, Kafka connector, Openflow, plus Fivetran, Informatica, Matillion and others
  • Transform and schedule: SQL, stored procedures, streams and tasks, dynamic tables, dbt, Airflow
  • Report, deploy and control cost: Tableau, Power BI, Terraform, Git, resource monitors, budgets and ACCOUNT_USAGE views

Key takeaways

  1. Learn the native tools first: Snowsight, SQL, stages with COPY INTO, Snowpipe, streams and tasks. Every other tool sits on top of these.
  2. Snowflake CLI is the preferred command-line client in October 2026. SnowSQL still works but is a legacy client in maintenance mode, not a deprecated one.
  3. dbt is the most common companion tool in Indian Snowflake job descriptions, ahead of any single ETL or BI product.
  4. Third-party ETL and BI tools are commonly used with Snowflake, but each company picks its own stack, so learn the concepts, then one tool per layer.
  5. Cost tools matter as much as build tools: resource monitors, budgets and ACCOUNT_USAGE views keep credit spend under control.

1. Snowflake tools at a glance

Short answer: Snowflake tools fall into eight layers, from the interface you type SQL into, through loading, transforming and scheduling, to reporting, deployment and cost control.

If you are still asking "what is Snowflake?", read our explainer on what Snowflake does first. In short, Snowflake is a cloud data platform with separate storage, compute (virtual warehouses) and cloud services layers. A virtual warehouse is a cluster of compute you start, stop and resize, and it uses credits, Snowflake's unit of compute billing. The tools below are how you actually work with that platform.

Layer Snowflake's own tools Tools commonly used with Snowflake Interfaces and clients Snowsight, Snowflake CLI, SnowSQL (legacy), Notebooks, VS Code extension DBeaver and other SQL clients through drivers Developer libraries Drivers (JDBC, ODBC, Python, Go, .NET, Node.js, PHP), Snowpark, Streamlit in Snowflake Spark through the Spark connector AI Cortex AI Functions, Cortex Analyst, Cortex Search, Cortex Agents, Snowflake CoWork, managed MCP server AI clients that connect over MCP Ingestion (ETL/ELT) COPY INTO, Snowpipe, Snowpipe Streaming, Kafka connector, Openflow Fivetran, Airbyte, Informatica, Matillion, Talend, Azure Data Factory Transformation SQL, stored procedures, UDFs, streams, dynamic tables, dbt Projects on Snowflake dbt Core, dbt Cloud Orchestration Tasks and task graphs Apache Airflow, Dagster, dbt Cloud BI and apps Streamlit in Snowflake, Snowflake CoWork Tableau, Power BI DevOps, cost and governance Terraform provider, Snowflake CLI, resource monitors, budgets, ACCOUNT_USAGE, Horizon Catalog Git, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps

Two quick definitions you will see again. ELT means extract, load, then transform inside the warehouse, which is the usual pattern on Snowflake. ETL transforms data before loading it. Most modern Snowflake teams load raw data first and transform it with SQL or dbt.

2. Snowflake's own interfaces: Snowsight, Snowflake CLI and SnowSQL

Short answer: Snowsight is the web interface, Snowflake CLI is the preferred command-line client, and SnowSQL is the older command-line client that still works but gets no new features.

Snowsight

Snowsight is Snowflake's browser-based interface. You write SQL in worksheets, browse databases, create warehouses, load small files through the stage upload screen, open Notebooks and build Streamlit apps. For a fresher, Snowsight is where every first query happens. Our Snowflake account setup guide walks through it step by step.

A few Snowsight facts trip people up (Snowflake documentation, October 2026):

  • The PUT command, which uploads local files to an internal stage, cannot run from a Snowsight worksheet. Use Snowflake CLI, a driver or the Snowsight stage upload screen instead.
  • When you create a warehouse in Snowsight, the default size is X-Large. With CREATE WAREHOUSE in SQL, the default is X-Small. Always check the size before you click Create.
  • Snowsight caps multi-cluster warehouses at 10 clusters; larger values need SQL.

Snowflake CLI

Snowflake CLI is an open-source command-line client (the command is snow). It runs SQL and manages Snowpark functions and procedures, Streamlit apps, warehouses and Snowflake Native Apps (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). It is the tool you use in scripts and CI/CD pipelines, for example snow sql to run a query, or snow dbt execute to run a dbt project inside Snowflake.

SnowSQL

SnowSQL is the original command-line client. Snowflake's SnowSQL page calls it a legacy client in maintenance-only mode: new features go only to Snowflake CLI, which is the preferred client for new installs. Support ends by minor version, and the last line, SnowSQL 1.5.x, is supported until 16 April 2028 (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). So SnowSQL is not deprecated, and you will still meet it in older projects and some job descriptions, but start new work with Snowflake CLI.

Question Snowflake CLI SnowSQL Status (Oct 2026) Preferred client, gets new features Legacy, maintenance only Command snow snowsql Best for New scripts, CI/CD, Snowpark, Streamlit, dbt projects Existing scripts in older projects Support window Current 1.5.x supported until 16 Apr 2028

Notebooks, Workspaces and the VS Code extension

Snowflake Notebooks are cell-based notebooks inside Snowsight where you mix Python, SQL and Markdown. They run on a Warehouse Runtime (GA) or a Container Runtime on Snowpark Container Services compute pools with CPU or GPU images. The original notebooks are now called "Legacy Notebooks", and Snowflake describes Jupyter-compatible "Notebooks in Workspaces" as the next generation (Snowflake documentation, October 2026).

Snowflake also publishes a Visual Studio Code extension with its own documentation page. We have not verified its feature list, so check the docs page before relying on a specific feature. VS Code itself does show up in hiring: one Hyderabad administrator job description we read in October 2026 asked for hands-on experience with an AI coding assistant and VS Code.

3. Developer tools: drivers, connectors, Snowpark and Streamlit

Short answer: Drivers connect applications and BI tools to Snowflake, Snowpark lets you write Python, Java or Scala that runs inside Snowflake, and Streamlit in Snowflake turns Python scripts into shared data apps.

Drivers and connectors

Every outside tool that talks to Snowflake, from Power BI to Airflow to your own Python script, goes through a driver or connector. Snowflake's drivers page lists official drivers for Go, JDBC, .NET, Node.js, ODBC (version 4.x is GA), PHP PDO and the Snowflake Connector for Python (GA). A shared Rust library called "Universal Core" now sits underneath ODBC 4.x and the Python connector (Snowflake documentation, October 2026).

In practice:

  • JDBC: Java applications and many desktop SQL clients such as DBeaver
  • ODBC: Windows tools and many BI products
  • Snowflake Connector for Python: scripts, Airflow tasks and data apps
  • Kafka connector and Spark connector: streaming from Kafka topics and reading or writing from Spark jobs, each with its own docs page

Snowpark

Snowpark is a set of libraries for Python, Java and Scala. You write DataFrame code on your laptop or in a notebook, and Snowpark turns it into SQL that runs on Snowflake compute. The operations are lazy: nothing runs until an action such as collect is called, and then the work is pushed down to a warehouse (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). This matters because your data never leaves Snowflake.

Snowpark also covers pandas on Snowflake (pandas code on Snowflake data, built on Modin), Snowpark Container Services (a managed container platform inside Snowflake, GA in AWS, Azure and Google Cloud commercial regions with some exceptions) and Snowpark-optimized warehouses for memory-heavy work. Our full guide to Snowpark in Snowflake covers setup, DataFrames, UDFs and use cases.

Here is a simplified example of opening a Snowpark Python session, based on the connection pattern in Snowflake's Snowpark documentation (October 2026). Once you have a session, you build DataFrames on it, and the SQL runs only when you call an action such as collect.

# simplified example: open a Snowpark Python session
from snowflake.snowpark import Session

connection_parameters = {
    "account": "<your snowflake account>",
    "user": "<your snowflake user>",
    # add your authentication settings here (for example key pair or SSO)
    "warehouse": "<your snowflake warehouse>", # optional
    "database": "<your snowflake database>", # optional
    "schema": "<your snowflake schema>", # optional
}
new_session = Session.builder.configs(connection_parameters).create()

Streamlit in Snowflake

Streamlit in Snowflake lets you build, deploy and share Streamlit apps on Snowflake without moving data out. Access is controlled with RBAC (role-based access control, where privileges go to roles and roles go to users), and apps run on a warehouse runtime or a container runtime (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). Teams use it for internal dashboards, data entry screens and small AI apps. It is a good portfolio project for a fresher who knows a little Python.

4. AI tools: Cortex, Snowflake CoWork and MCP

Short answer: Cortex is Snowflake's family of AI features, Snowflake CoWork (formerly Snowflake Intelligence) is the business-user chat product built on them, and the managed MCP server lets outside AI clients use Snowflake data safely.

Cortex is Snowflake's umbrella name for AI inside the platform. The main tools, with status as Snowflake states it (Snowflake documentation and release notes, October 2026):

Tool What it does Status Cortex AI Functions SQL functions such as AI_COMPLETE, AI_CLASSIFY, AI_EXTRACT, AI_SUMMARIZE and AI_TRANSLATE Most GA, some preview; select regions Cortex Analyst Natural language to SQL over semantic views Documented; Snowflake now recommends moving to Cortex Agents Cortex Search Hybrid vector and keyword search over text, for RAG and search bars Documented Cortex Agents Managed agents that plan and call tools such as Analyst, Search and procedures GA on 4 Nov 2025 Snowflake CoWork (formerly Snowflake Intelligence) Business users ask questions in plain language over structured and unstructured data GA on 4 Nov 2025 Snowflake-managed MCP server Exposes agents, search, Analyst and read-only SQL to AI clients over MCP Preview 2 Oct 2025, GA 4 Nov 2025

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets AI assistants call outside tools in a consistent way. Snowflake's managed MCP server is the supported option. The older community repo under Snowflake-Labs is deprecated and should not be used for new work. Our dedicated Snowflake MCP server post covers setup, and our guide to Cortex AI functions has a hands-on lab.

Three cautions for October 2026:

  • Document AI was shut down on 16 March 2026. If an old tutorial mentions it, use the AI_EXTRACT function instead.
  • Cortex Code is Snowflake's AI coding agent. Some Snowflake pages call it "Snowflake CoCo", but we have not confirmed the rename on an official announcement, so treat that name with care.
  • Cortex features are offered in "select regions". Do not assume a given AI function is available in Snowflake's India regions, AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) or Azure Central India (Pune), without checking the regional availability page. AI features also stay disabled on a trial account until you add a credit card.

5. Ingestion and ETL/ELT tools: getting data into Snowflake

Short answer: For files, use a stage with COPY INTO for batch loads and Snowpipe for continuous loads; for rows and events, use Snowpipe Streaming or the Kafka connector; for SaaS apps and databases, use Openflow or a third-party ELT tool such as Fivetran, Airbyte, Informatica or Matillion.

Native loading tools

  • Stages and COPY INTO: a stage is a storage location for files, either inside Snowflake (internal) or in your own S3, Azure or Google Cloud storage (external). COPY INTO loads staged files into a table using a warehouse. This is the classic batch loading tool. See our COPY INTO guide for a full loading lab.
  • Snowpipe: a serverless service that loads files automatically as they land in cloud storage, usually triggered by an event notification. No warehouse is needed; Snowflake manages the compute. Our Snowpipe lab shows auto-ingest from S3.
  • Snowpipe Streaming: row-level, real-time ingestion without staging files, through Java, Python and Node.js SDKs, a REST API or the Kafka connector. Snowflake states throughput of up to 20 GB per second per table and latency as low as 5 seconds, depending on workload (Snowflake documentation, October 2026).
  • Kafka connector: streams Kafka topics into Snowflake tables.

Snowflake Openflow

Snowflake Openflow is Snowflake's own data integration service, built on Apache NiFi. It comes in two deployment options: a Snowflake deployment that runs on Snowpark Container Services (GA in AWS, Azure and Google Cloud commercial regions) and BYOC, where the data plane runs in your own cloud account (GA in AWS commercial regions). Its connectors include Google Drive, Box, SharePoint, change data capture (CDC) from MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server and MongoDB, Kafka, Kinesis, Salesforce, Google Ads, LinkedIn Ads and Shopify (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). Openflow is not enabled on trial accounts by default. Our Snowflake Openflow guide covers its architecture and setup.

Third-party ETL and ELT tools

Many teams use a separate ingestion tool, especially when they already have one. These tools are commonly used with Snowflake; we have not checked partner tiers or certifications, so confirm details on each vendor's own documentation.

Tool Type Where you meet it Fivetran Managed ELT connectors Named in 2 of the 14 JDs we read (Capgemini, Deloitte) Airbyte ELT connectors Named by Capgemini as an ingestion option Informatica (IICS) Enterprise ETL, cloud and on-premise TCS (IICS) and Deloitte JDs; common in migration projects Matillion Cloud ETL/ELT Deloitte JD Talend ETL Deloitte JD Azure Data Factory Azure's data integration service Listed as a key skill on an Infosys Snowflake data engineer JD

Which Snowflake tool is recommended for batch data processing?

This is a common exam-style question. For batch loads of files, the native answer is COPY INTO from a stage, run on a virtual warehouse and usually scheduled with a task. Snowpipe is designed for continuous, file-by-file loading, and Snowpipe Streaming is for row-level real-time data. Use this simple rule:

  1. Files arriving once a day or once an hour: stage plus COPY INTO, scheduled by a task.
  2. Files arriving all day, which you want loaded within minutes: Snowpipe with auto-ingest.
  3. Events or rows from an application or Kafka: Snowpipe Streaming or the Kafka connector.
  4. SaaS apps or operational databases with CDC: Openflow or a third-party ELT tool.

6. Transformation tools: SQL, dbt and Snowflake's built-in options

Short answer: Most transformation on Snowflake is SQL, organised either with Snowflake objects such as streams, tasks, dynamic tables and stored procedures, or with dbt, which is the most requested companion tool in Indian Snowflake job descriptions.

Built-in transformation tools

  • SQL and views: the base of everything. If your SQL is weak, fix that before any other tool.
  • Stored procedures and UDFs: a stored procedure runs a set of steps, with handlers in Java, JavaScript, Python, Scala or Snowflake Scripting (SQL). A UDF (user-defined function) returns a value you use inside a query.
  • Streams: a stream records the changes (inserts, updates, deletes) made to a table since you last read it, which is the basis of change data capture inside Snowflake.
  • Dynamic tables: a table defined by a SELECT that Snowflake keeps fresh up to a target lag, with a minimum of 60 seconds. See our dynamic tables guide.
  • Snowpark: Python DataFrame code for logic that is awkward in SQL.

dbt

dbt (data build tool) is an open-source tool that lets you write transformations as SELECT statements in version-controlled files, test them and build them in dependency order. It does the "T" in ELT. In the 14 Snowflake JDs we read on 25 October 2026, dbt was named in 9, and many titles now read "Snowflake + DBT". A Naukri search for "dbt snowflake" showed about 1,729 results on the same day. These are keyword-match counts, not a number of open jobs.

You can run dbt in three ways:

  • dbt Core on your machine or a server, connecting to Snowflake through the adapter
  • dbt Cloud, the hosted service, which one JD named for CI/CD and orchestration
  • dbt Projects on Snowflake, which runs dbt Core (and dbt Fusion) transformations inside Snowflake with managed runtimes. You develop in Snowflake Workspaces or a connected Git repo, deploy with CREATE DBT PROJECT, and run with EXECUTE DBT PROJECT or snow dbt execute on a warehouse (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). Its GA status is not stated on that page, so check before using it in production.

Is dbt required for Snowflake? No. Snowflake works fully without it. But the most detailed JD we read, from Capgemini, asked for modular dbt models, dbt tests, snapshots for SCD Type 2 (slowly changing dimensions that keep history) and two or more years of production dbt. If you are aiming at Snowflake data engineering roles, dbt is the tool to learn right after SQL.

7. Orchestration tools: tasks, Airflow and others

Short answer: Snowflake tasks schedule SQL and procedures inside Snowflake; Apache Airflow and similar tools orchestrate pipelines that span many systems.

Tasks and task graphs

A task runs a SQL statement or calls a stored procedure on a schedule, or when a stream has new data. Serverless tasks let Snowflake manage the compute; user-managed tasks name a warehouse. Task graphs chain tasks in series or in parallel. A new task starts suspended, so you must resume it (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). Here is the documented example, slightly expanded:

-- simplified example: a scheduled task
CREATE TASK SCHEDULED_T1
  WAREHOUSE = 'COMPUTE_WH'
  SCHEDULE = '60 MINUTES'
  AS SELECT 1;

ALTER TASK SCHEDULED_T1 RESUME;

Streams and tasks together give you incremental pipelines without any outside tool. Our streams and tasks lab builds one with MERGE.

Apache Airflow and other orchestrators

Apache Airflow is an open-source orchestrator that runs pipelines written in Python as DAGs (directed acyclic graphs of steps). It is commonly used with Snowflake through the Python connector. In our October 2026 JD sample, Airflow appeared in Capgemini and EPAM JDs and as "good to have" in a Cognizant one. Capgemini also listed Dagster and dbt Cloud as orchestration options.

Need Use tasks Use Airflow or similar Steps all inside Snowflake Yes Optional Steps across APIs, files, other databases Limited Yes Retry, alerting, one view of many systems Basic Strong Extra infrastructure to run None Yes, unless managed

8. BI and reporting tools

Short answer: Tableau and Power BI are the BI tools most often named alongside Snowflake in the JDs we read; Streamlit in Snowflake and Snowflake CoWork cover apps and natural-language questions inside Snowflake itself.

BI tools connect through the ODBC or JDBC drivers, send SQL to a Snowflake warehouse and show the results as dashboards. In our JD sample, Deloitte named Tableau and Power BI, and Caterpillar listed Power BI as preferred. Both are commonly used with Snowflake; check each vendor's own documentation for connector details.

Three things matter when you connect any BI tool:

  • A dedicated warehouse: give BI its own warehouse so dashboard queries do not slow down data loading. Multi-cluster warehouses (Enterprise Edition and above) add clusters when many users query at once.
  • Authentication: Snowflake's phased rollout ends single-factor password sign-in for human users, and its second phase (May to July 2026) covered new human users, including sign-ins through BI tools. The final phase is scheduled for August to October 2026, and Snowflake calls all these dates estimates (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). Service accounts of TYPE=SERVICE cannot use passwords at all, so BI and ETL service users need key-pair authentication or another strong method.
  • Cost: every dashboard refresh uses warehouse credits. Use auto-suspend and a resource monitor on the BI warehouse.

Inside Snowflake, Streamlit in Snowflake is a good choice for custom data apps, and Snowflake CoWork (formerly Snowflake Intelligence) lets business users ask questions in plain language. Our Snowflake Intelligence guide explains how it works.

9. DevOps and infrastructure-as-code tools

Short answer: Teams manage Snowflake objects as code with the Terraform provider, keep SQL and dbt code in Git, and deploy through CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps, often calling Snowflake CLI.

  • Terraform: infrastructure as code (IaC) means you describe warehouses, databases, roles and grants in files and let a tool create them. The Snowflake Terraform provider (snowflakedb/snowflake) became an officially supported Snowflake product with version 2.0.0 on 23 April 2025. Only the latest version is supported, and preview resources are off by default (snowflakedb Terraform provider GitHub page, October 2026). One Infosys Snowflake admin JD we read listed Terraform for automation.
  • Git: version control for SQL, dbt models and Snowpark code. dbt Projects on Snowflake can connect to a Git repo.
  • CI/CD: JDs from Capgemini, TCS, Ontimeglobal, DTCC and Caterpillar asked for Git or CI/CD, naming GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab, Bitbucket and Jenkins.
  • Snowflake CLI in pipelines: use snow sql or snow dbt execute in a CI job. For CI service users, use key-pair authentication, a minimum 2048-bit RSA key, rather than a password.

10. Monitoring, cost and governance tools

Short answer: Snowflake's built-in cost and monitoring tools are resource monitors for warehouses, budgets for serverless and AI spend, ACCOUNT_USAGE views for history, and Horizon Catalog for governance.

Credits per hour double at each warehouse size, from 1 for X-Small to 512 for 6X-Large, and warehouses bill per second with a 60-second minimum each time they start (Snowflake documentation, October 2026). In Snowflake's pricing table effective 15 October 2026, on-demand credits in AWS US East cost $2, $3, $4 and $6 by edition (Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical, VPS), and storage costs $23 per TB per month. Prices vary by region and edition, so check your own contract.

Tool What it controls Who uses it Auto-suspend and auto-resume Stops idle warehouses; both on by default Everyone who creates a warehouse Resource monitors Credit limits on warehouses, with notify or suspend actions; only ACCOUNTADMIN can create Admins Budgets Spend on serverless and AI services, which resource monitors do not cover Admins, FinOps ACCOUNT_USAGE views Query, login, metering and storage history for up to 1 year, with 45 minutes to 3 hours latency Admins, data engineers Query Profile Shows where a query spends time Developers Horizon Catalog Governance: masking and row access policies, tagging, lineage, classification, Trust Center Admins, governance teams

Here is the documented resource monitor example:

-- simplified example: cap a warehouse at 1,000 credits
CREATE OR REPLACE RESOURCE MONITOR limit1
  WITH CREDIT_QUOTA = 1000
  TRIGGERS ON 100 PERCENT DO SUSPEND;

ALTER WAREHOUSE wh1 SET RESOURCE_MONITOR = limit1;

Common ACCOUNT_USAGE views include QUERY_HISTORY, WAREHOUSE_METERING_HISTORY, LOGIN_HISTORY and STORAGE_USAGE, all in the SNOWFLAKE database. For hands-on tuning, read our query optimization guide. Third-party observability, data quality and cost tools also exist; evaluate them only after you have used the native tools, because they read the same metadata.

11. Which Snowflake tools Indian job descriptions ask for

Short answer: In the 14 Snowflake JDs we read on 25 October 2026, SQL appeared in every one, dbt and Python in 9 each, and Git or CI/CD in 5; specific ETL and BI products appeared far less often.

We read 14 Snowflake job descriptions from Naukri and LinkedIn on 25 October 2026, from companies such as Infosys, TCS, HCLTech, Capgemini, EPAM, Deloitte, DTCC and Caterpillar (listings seen on 25 Oct 2026). Here is how often each tool was named:

Tool or skill JDs naming it (of 14) Notes SQL 14 Every JD dbt 9 Often in the title, "Snowflake + DBT" Python 9 Snowpark named in 2, PySpark in 1 Git and CI/CD 5 GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab, Jenkins Snowpipe 4 Plus COPY and stages Airflow 3 One as good to have Fivetran, Informatica, Power BI 2 each Mostly senior or migration roles Cortex AI 2 Newer ask in senior roles Terraform, Tableau, Matillion, Streamlit, SnowSQL 1 each Role-specific

Two more points from the same sample. Most JDs asked for AWS or Azure alongside Snowflake. And none accepted 0 years of experience; the lowest ask was 2 to 5 years. For context, a Naukri search for "snowflake" returned about 25,910 results across India on 25 October 2026, including about 4,969 in Hyderabad and 8,463 in Bengaluru. A search for "snowpark" returned only 175, because Snowpark usually appears as a skill, not a title. All of these are keyword-match counts, not open jobs.

The lesson: tool lists in JDs are long, but the core is stable. SQL, Snowflake features, dbt, Python and one cloud get you shortlisted. A specific ETL or BI product is usually a bonus you can learn on the job.

12. Snowflake tools by role

Short answer: Developers live in SQL, Snowsight and dbt; data engineers add ingestion, orchestration and Python; admins focus on roles, warehouses, cost and automation; analysts focus on SQL and BI.

Role Must know Good to add Snowflake developer Snowsight, SQL, stages, COPY INTO, Snowpipe, stored procedures, streams and tasks dbt, Python connector, Snowflake CLI Snowflake data engineer All developer tools, dbt, Python or Snowpark, one orchestrator, one cloud Openflow or an ELT tool, Kafka, CI/CD Snowflake administrator RBAC, warehouses, resource monitors, budgets, ACCOUNT_USAGE, network policies, key-pair auth Terraform, Snowflake CLI, Python or shell scripting Data or BI analyst SQL, Snowsight, semantic views Tableau or Power BI, Streamlit, Snowflake CoWork ML or AI engineer Snowpark, Notebooks, Cortex AI Functions Cortex Agents, Container Services, MCP

For full role guides, read our posts on the Snowflake developer and Snowflake data engineer roles.

13. How to choose and learn Snowflake tools

Short answer: Learn native tools before partner tools, pick one tool per layer, and let your background decide where you start.

Use this checklist when you pick tools for a project or for your own learning:

  1. Start native. Can Snowflake do it already with COPY INTO, Snowpipe, tasks, dynamic tables or Streamlit? Native tools need no extra licence or server.
  2. Match the data source. Files suit stages and Snowpipe. Databases with CDC suit Openflow or an ELT tool. Events suit Snowpipe Streaming or Kafka.
  3. Match the team. A team that already runs Informatica or Azure Data Factory will keep it. Learn the concepts so you can switch.
  4. Check the edition and region. Multi-cluster warehouses need Enterprise Edition. Openflow BYOC is GA in AWS commercial regions. Cortex features are regional.
  5. Count the cost. Every tool that queries Snowflake uses credits. Give heavy tools their own warehouse and a resource monitor.
  6. Prefer supported tools. Use Snowflake CLI over SnowSQL for new work, and the managed MCP server over the deprecated community repo.

Where to start, by background:

  • Fresher (B.Tech, BCA, B.Sc, MCA): SQL, Snowsight, stages, COPY INTO, then dbt and basic Python. Build one end-to-end project; our Snowflake projects list has ideas.
  • SQL or PL/SQL developer: Snowflake SQL differences, stored procedures in Snowflake Scripting, streams and tasks, then dbt.
  • ETL or Informatica developer: stages, Snowpipe and COPY INTO first, then compare your ETL tool with ELT using dbt. Migration roles value your background.
  • DBA: roles and grants, warehouses, resource monitors, ACCOUNT_USAGE, key-pair authentication, then Terraform.
  • Data analyst: SQL, semantic views, a BI tool, then Streamlit.

Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Learning five ETL tools before you can write a clean MERGE statement
  • Leaving a Snowsight-created warehouse at the default X-Large size
  • Using a password for a service user in a BI or CI tool
  • Following old tutorials that use Document AI or the Snowflake-Labs MCP repo
  • Assuming an AI feature is available in AWS Mumbai or Azure Central India without checking

Frequently asked questions

What are Snowflake tools?

Snowflake tools are the interfaces, clients, libraries and partner products used to load, transform, query, secure and report on data in Snowflake. They include Snowflake's own Snowsight, Snowflake CLI, SnowSQL, drivers, Snowpark, Streamlit and Cortex, plus tools commonly used with Snowflake such as dbt, Airflow, Fivetran, Informatica, Tableau, Power BI and Terraform. Each sits in a layer: ingestion, transformation, orchestration, BI, DevOps or cost control.

Is Snowflake itself a tool?

Snowflake is a cloud data platform rather than a single tool. It has separate storage, compute and cloud services layers, and you work with it through tools such as Snowsight, Snowflake CLI and drivers. People often call it a tool on resumes and in job descriptions, but in practice it is the platform at the centre of a wider toolchain that includes ETL, dbt, orchestration and BI products.

Is Snowflake an ETL tool?

No, Snowflake is not an ETL tool in the classic sense, but it has built-in loading and transformation features. Stages with COPY INTO, Snowpipe, Snowpipe Streaming and Openflow bring data in, while SQL, streams, tasks, dynamic tables and stored procedures transform it. Most teams follow an ELT pattern: load raw data first, then transform it inside Snowflake with SQL or dbt.

What is Snowsight?

Snowsight is Snowflake's browser-based interface. You use it to write SQL in worksheets, browse databases, create warehouses, upload small files to stages, open Notebooks and build Streamlit apps. One caution: a warehouse created in Snowsight defaults to X-Large size, while CREATE WAREHOUSE in SQL defaults to X-Small, so always check the size before creating one.

What is Snowflake CLI?

Snowflake CLI is Snowflake's open-source command-line client, run with the command snow. It executes SQL and manages Snowpark functions and procedures, Streamlit apps, warehouses and Snowflake Native Apps. It is the preferred client for new installs in October 2026 and works well in scripts and CI/CD pipelines, for example running dbt projects with snow dbt execute.

Is SnowSQL deprecated?

No, SnowSQL is not deprecated. Snowflake describes it as a legacy client in maintenance-only mode, which means it still works but new features go only to Snowflake CLI. Support ends by minor version, and SnowSQL 1.5.x is supported until 16 April 2028. Use Snowflake CLI for new work and keep SnowSQL only for existing scripts.

What is the best ETL tool for Snowflake?

There is no single best ETL tool for Snowflake; the right one depends on your data sources and team. Start with native options: COPY INTO for batch files, Snowpipe for continuous files and Openflow for SaaS apps and databases with CDC. Third-party tools commonly used with Snowflake include Fivetran, Airbyte, Informatica, Matillion, Talend and Azure Data Factory.

Which Snowflake tool is recommended for batch data processing?

For batch loading of files, the native choice is COPY INTO from a stage, run on a virtual warehouse and usually scheduled with a task. Snowpipe is designed for continuous, file-by-file loading as files arrive, and Snowpipe Streaming handles row-level real-time data. So if files arrive once a day or once an hour, use COPY INTO with a task.

Is dbt required for Snowflake?

No, dbt is not required, because Snowflake works fully on its own with SQL, stored procedures, streams, tasks and dynamic tables. However, dbt was named in 9 of the 14 Snowflake job descriptions we read in October 2026, often in the job title. If you want Snowflake data engineering roles, dbt is the most useful tool to learn right after SQL.

What is dbt Projects on Snowflake?

dbt Projects on Snowflake runs dbt Core and dbt Fusion transformations inside Snowflake with managed runtimes. You develop in Snowflake Workspaces or a connected Git repo, deploy with CREATE DBT PROJECT and run with EXECUTE DBT PROJECT or snow dbt execute on a warehouse. Snowflake's page does not state its GA status, so check before using it in production.

Does Power BI work with Snowflake?

Yes, Power BI is commonly used with Snowflake. BI tools connect through Snowflake's ODBC or JDBC drivers and send SQL to a warehouse. In the job descriptions we read in October 2026, Deloitte named Tableau and Power BI, and Caterpillar listed Power BI as preferred. Give BI its own warehouse and use strong authentication rather than single-factor passwords.

Which BI tools work best with Snowflake?

Tableau and Power BI are the BI tools most often named alongside Snowflake in the job descriptions we read. Inside Snowflake, Streamlit in Snowflake suits custom data apps and Snowflake CoWork lets business users ask questions in plain language. Whatever you pick, use a dedicated warehouse, auto-suspend and a resource monitor so dashboards do not run up credits.

What is Snowpark?

Snowpark is a set of Snowflake libraries for Python, Java and Scala. You write DataFrame code, and Snowpark turns it into SQL that runs on Snowflake compute, so data never leaves the platform. Operations are lazy, meaning nothing runs until an action such as collect is called. Snowpark also covers pandas on Snowflake and Snowpark Container Services.

What is Streamlit in Snowflake?

Streamlit in Snowflake lets you build, deploy and share Streamlit data apps directly on Snowflake without moving data out. Access is controlled with role-based access control, and apps run on a warehouse runtime or a container runtime. Teams use it for internal dashboards, data entry screens and small AI apps, and it makes a strong portfolio project for freshers.

What is Snowflake Openflow?

Snowflake Openflow is Snowflake's data integration service, built on Apache NiFi. It runs either on Snowpark Container Services inside Snowflake or as BYOC in your own cloud account. Its connectors include Google Drive, SharePoint, CDC from MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server and MongoDB, Kafka, Salesforce and Shopify. It is not enabled on trial accounts by default.

What are Snowflake Cortex tools?

Cortex is Snowflake's family of AI features. It includes Cortex AI Functions such as AI_COMPLETE and AI_EXTRACT, Cortex Analyst for natural language to SQL, Cortex Search for hybrid search, and Cortex Agents, which became GA on 4 November 2025. Snowflake CoWork, formerly Snowflake Intelligence, is built on these. Availability is regional, so check before assuming India region support.

What happened to Snowflake Document AI?

Snowflake shut down Document AI on 16 March 2026, so it is no longer a usable product. If an older tutorial or course mentions Document AI, use the AI_EXTRACT function, one of the Cortex AI Functions, instead. Always check the publication date of Snowflake tutorials, because several AI product names and statuses changed during 2025 and 2026.

What is the Snowflake MCP server?

The Snowflake-managed MCP server lets outside AI assistants use Snowflake data through the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI to tools. It exposes Cortex Agents, Cortex Search, Cortex Analyst and read-only SQL. It entered preview on 2 October 2025 and became GA on 4 November 2025. The older Snowflake-Labs community repo is deprecated.

Which drivers does Snowflake provide?

Snowflake provides official drivers for Go, JDBC, .NET, Node.js, ODBC, PHP PDO and the Snowflake Connector for Python. ODBC 4.x and the Python connector are GA and share a Rust library called Universal Core. BI tools, SQL clients such as DBeaver, Airflow and custom applications all connect to Snowflake through one of these drivers or connectors.

What IDE should I use for Snowflake?

Most beginners start in Snowsight worksheets and Notebooks, which need no installation. For local development, use Snowflake CLI with an editor such as Visual Studio Code, for which Snowflake publishes an extension, or a desktop SQL client such as DBeaver connected through the JDBC driver. Pick one setup and use it for scripts, dbt code and Git together.

What are Snowflake cost optimization tools?

Snowflake's built-in cost tools are auto-suspend and auto-resume, resource monitors for warehouse credits, budgets for serverless and AI spend, ACCOUNT_USAGE views such as WAREHOUSE_METERING_HISTORY, and Query Profile for slow queries. Credits per hour double with each warehouse size, from 1 for X-Small to 512 for 6X-Large, so right-sizing warehouses is the biggest saving.

What tools does a Snowflake admin use?

A Snowflake administrator mainly uses RBAC roles and grants, warehouses, resource monitors, budgets, ACCOUNT_USAGE views, network policies and key-pair authentication. For automation, admins add Terraform, Snowflake CLI and Python or shell scripts. One Infosys Snowflake admin job description we read in October 2026 listed SQL, Python, shell or Terraform for automation.

Can I use Terraform with Snowflake?

Yes. The Snowflake Terraform provider, snowflakedb/snowflake, became an officially supported Snowflake product with version 2.0.0 on 23 April 2025. You describe warehouses, databases, roles and grants in code, and Terraform creates them. Only the latest provider version is supported, and preview resources are off by default, so keep it updated and test changes first.

Which Snowflake tools should a fresher learn first?

A fresher should learn SQL, Snowsight, stages with COPY INTO, Snowpipe, and streams and tasks first, then dbt and basic Python. In the job descriptions we read in October 2026, SQL appeared in all 14, dbt and Python in 9 each. Build one end-to-end project, because Snowflake-titled roles we found started at about two years' experience.
