Quick answer
A Snowflake developer is a data professional who builds and maintains the tables, SQL transformations, data loads, stored procedures and scheduled jobs that run on the Snowflake AI Data Cloud, so that analysts, reports and applications get clean, fast and trusted data. In practice you write a lot of SQL, load files through stages and Snowpipe, model data into fact and dimension tables, automate work with streams, tasks and dbt, and tune queries so they cost fewer credits. On 25 October 2026, a Naukri search for "snowflake developer" returned about 13,717 results across India. That is a keyword-match count, not a vacancy count, but it shows the title is common.
- Core skill: SQL appeared in all 14 Snowflake job descriptions we read in October 2026
- Top companion tools: dbt and Python, each named in 9 of those 14 job descriptions
- Entry reality: the lowest experience asked for in Snowflake-titled roles was about 2 to 5 years; freshers usually enter through data engineer, SQL or ETL roles first
- Typical pay: AmbitionBox showed ₹8.2 to 9 lakh a year for Snowflake developers in India (2 to 6 years, 4.2k salaries, October 2026)
- Certification: helpful but rarely required; only 1 of the 14 job descriptions required SnowPro Core
Key takeaways
- A Snowflake developer is mainly a SQL and ELT developer who knows Snowflake's features well: stages, warehouses, streams, tasks, Time Travel, cloning and role-based access.
- Real Indian job descriptions in October 2026 paired Snowflake with dbt, Python, one cloud (AWS or Azure) and Git-based CI/CD far more often than with any certification.
- SQL developers, ETL and Informatica developers, DBAs and ETL testers already have most of the base skills; the gap is usually Snowflake features, dbt and cost awareness.
- Freshers should target associate or junior data engineer roles where Snowflake is a preferred skill, and prove ability with a GitHub portfolio.
- Pay figures differ a lot by title and sample size, so always read the source, the experience band and the sample before you compare offers.
1. Snowflake developer at a glance
Short answer: The role is SQL-first data development on Snowflake, usually in IT services firms and global capability centres (GCCs), with dbt, Python and a cloud platform as the most common add-ons.
Job counts and JD patterns come from Naukri and LinkedIn listings read on 25 October 2026; pay comes from AmbitionBox on the same date.
2. What is a Snowflake developer?
Short answer: A Snowflake developer turns raw data that lands in Snowflake into reliable, query-ready tables, using SQL, Snowflake features and supporting tools such as dbt and Python.
Snowflake is a cloud data platform that runs on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud and keeps storage and compute separate. If you are new to the platform itself, read our explainer on what Snowflake does first. This guide focuses on the person who builds on it.
Think of a retail or banking client. Sales and payment data arrive every hour. Someone must load it, clean it, model it into fact and dimension tables, schedule the refresh, secure it by role and keep the bill low. In Indian IT services firms and GCCs, that person is usually called a Snowflake developer; product companies often say "data engineer".
Terms you will see in every Snowflake developer job description (Snowflake documentation, October 2026):
- Virtual warehouse: compute that runs your queries, sized from X-Small upward
- Credit: the unit Snowflake bills compute in; bigger warehouses use more per hour
- Micro-partition: automatic storage blocks of about 50 MB to 500 MB of uncompressed data
- Stage: a location for data files, inside Snowflake or in your cloud storage
- Snowpipe: loads new files automatically soon after they land in a stage
- Stream: records changed rows in a table so you process only new data
- Task: a scheduled job that runs SQL or calls a stored procedure
- Time Travel: query or restore past data, up to 1 day on Standard Edition and up to 90 days on Enterprise and above
- Fail-safe: a further 7 days in which only Snowflake Support can try to recover data
- RBAC (role-based access control): privileges go to roles, and roles go to users
- ELT: extract and load raw data first, then transform it inside Snowflake
- dbt (data build tool): SQL transformations as version-controlled, tested models
- Snowpark: Python, Java and Scala libraries that run DataFrame work on Snowflake compute
- Apache Iceberg tables: an open table format other engines can also read
- Cortex: Snowflake's AI layer, including Cortex AI Functions callable from SQL
- MCP (Model Context Protocol): an open standard that connects AI assistants to tools and data
3. What a Snowflake developer does day to day
Short answer: A normal day mixes checking overnight loads, writing and testing SQL or dbt models, reviewing code, tuning slow queries and answering questions from analysts and business teams.
Here is a realistic day for a Snowflake developer with 3 years of experience at an IT services firm in Hyderabad, working for a US client. It is a composite, not one person's diary.
- 9:30 am, check the overnight run. One file failed because a date arrived in a new format. You fix the file format and reload.
- 10:30 am, stand-up call. Share progress and blockers.
- 11:00 am, build a model. You write a dbt model for a daily "orders by region" mart, add tests for nulls and duplicates, and push to Git.
- 2:00 pm, code review. You spot a join in a teammate's pull request that multiplies rows.
- 3:00 pm, performance work. A dashboard query is slow. The Query Profile shows a large scan, so you filter earlier and test on a right-sized warehouse.
- 4:30 pm, access request. A new analyst needs read access; you grant the right role, not individual tables.
- 6:00 pm, client overlap. You agree the logic for a new metric with the US team and document it.
Naukri's "snowflake" India page showed most listings as work from office (22,175 of 25,910) on 25 October 2026, with hybrid and remote much smaller.
4. Snowflake developer roles and responsibilities
Short answer: Across 14 Snowflake job descriptions we read in October 2026, the recurring duties were building ELT pipelines, data modelling, SQL and performance tuning, using Snowflake features such as Snowpipe, streams, tasks and Time Travel, managing cost and access, and shipping code through Git and CI/CD.
We read 14 Snowflake job descriptions on Naukri and LinkedIn on 25 October 2026. They covered developer, data engineer, administrator and architect titles at firms such as Infosys, TCS, HCLTech, Capgemini, DTCC, EPAM Systems, Deloitte, Caterpillar and Insight International. Here are the responsibilities that came up again and again, written as a standard Snowflake developer job description.
- Build and load data: ELT pipelines from files, databases and apps, using stages, COPY INTO and Snowpipe; DTCC named Snowpipe and external tables, and TCS's senior data engineer role named Informatica Cloud (IICS)
- Transform and model: SQL transformations, views, stored procedures and UDFs; dimensional models (data modelling appeared in 5 of 14 JDs); dbt models with tests, which Capgemini described as staging, intermediate and mart layers with snapshots for SCD Type 2
- Automate and schedule: streams and tasks for change data capture (CDC), named in 4 of 14 JDs; Airflow where the team uses it
- Tune and control cost: the Query Profile, clustering decisions, warehouse sizing and resource monitors (cost work appeared in 4 of 14)
- Secure and recover: role-based access, masking, Time Travel and zero-copy cloning
- Deliver like a software engineer: Git and CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab or Jenkins were named), documentation, Agile and client calls
Newer asks: TCS and EPAM senior roles mentioned Snowflake Cortex AI, and three JDs (Insight, DTCC, Ontimeglobal) mentioned AI-assisted coding tools.
5. Snowflake developer skills
Short answer: SQL is non-negotiable; after that, the skills Indian employers named most were dbt, Python, data modelling, a cloud platform, Git and CI/CD, and the core Snowflake features.
The table shows how many of the 14 job descriptions we read on 25 October 2026 named each skill. It is a small, dated sample, so treat it as a direction, not a statistic for the whole market. AmbitionBox's Snowflake Developer page (October 2026) listed a similar skill set, led by SQL, data engineering, Spark, ETL, Informatica, Python, data warehousing and data modelling.
Most JDs also asked for AWS or Azure, sometimes naming Azure Data Factory, AWS S3 or SQS. You need not be a cloud engineer, but know how files reach a bucket and how Snowflake reads them. Clear written English and documentation habits matter too, because most roles serve overseas clients.
6. The Snowflake developer tech stack in 2026
Short answer: Inside Snowflake you use Snowsight, SQL, Snowflake Scripting, streams, tasks, dynamic tables and Snowpark; around it you use dbt, Git, a cloud platform, an orchestrator and a BI tool.
Snowflake's own tools
- Snowsight: the web interface for worksheets, notebooks, query history and monitoring
- Snowflake CLI (command snow): Snowflake's preferred command-line client for new installs. SnowSQL is now a legacy client in maintenance mode; the SnowSQL 1.5.x line is supported until 16 April 2028 (Snowflake documentation, October 2026)
- Stored procedures: written in Snowflake Scripting (SQL), JavaScript, Python, Java or Scala, as the Snowflake stored procedures overview explains (October 2026)
- Streams and tasks: CDC and scheduling; see our hands-on guide to Snowflake streams and tasks
- Dynamic tables: tables that keep a SELECT result fresh to a target lag (minimum 60 seconds); see dynamic tables in Snowflake
- Snowpark: Python, Java and Scala libraries whose DataFrame operations are lazy and run on Snowflake compute only when an action such as collect runs, according to the Snowpark developer guide (October 2026)
- Warehouses: new standard warehouses default to Gen2 in regions where it is available, and Adaptive Warehouses became generally available on AWS on 16 June 2026 (Snowflake documentation, October 2026)
AI features you will start to meet: Cortex AI Functions such as AI_COMPLETE and AI_EXTRACT (availability varies by region, so check before assuming an India region has them); Snowflake CoWork (formerly Snowflake Intelligence) and Cortex Agents, both generally available since 4 November 2025; Snowflake's managed MCP server (preview 2 October 2025, generally available 4 November 2025); and Cortex Code, Snowflake's AI coding agent.
Tools commonly used with Snowflake: dbt (Naukri showed about 1,729 results for "dbt snowflake" on 25 October 2026), Airflow or Dagster, Fivetran, Airbyte, Informatica or Matillion, Power BI or Tableau, Git with a CI/CD tool, and AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage. Some newer projects use Snowflake Openflow, Snowflake's data integration service built on Apache NiFi.
Snowflake lists two India regions, AWS Mumbai and Azure Central India (Pune), but many Indian developers work on client accounts in US or European regions.
Two simplified examples you should be able to read
A Snowflake developer writes code like this every week. The first is a minimal Snowflake Scripting stored procedure from the documentation pattern.
-- Simplified example: a minimal Snowflake Scripting procedure
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE output_message(message VARCHAR)
RETURNS VARCHAR NOT NULL
LANGUAGE SQL
AS
$$
BEGIN
RETURN message;
END;
$$;
CALL output_message('Hello World');
The second schedules a job. A new task starts suspended, so you must resume it.
-- Simplified example: a scheduled task that runs every hour
CREATE TASK scheduled_t1
WAREHOUSE = 'COMPUTE_WH'
SCHEDULE = '60 MINUTES'
AS SELECT 1;
ALTER TASK scheduled_t1 RESUME;
In real projects the task would run a MERGE or call a procedure. For SQL practice, start with our Snowflake SQL tutorial.
7. Snowflake developer vs data engineer vs admin vs architect
Short answer: A developer builds the SQL, models and jobs; a data engineer owns end-to-end pipelines and orchestration; an admin owns accounts, security, cost and monitoring; an architect designs the whole platform and leads migrations.
In Indian job listings these titles overlap a lot. Many "Snowflake Developer" JDs read like data engineer roles, and many firms post "Snowflake + DBT" titles that cover both. Use this table as a guide, not a strict rule.
Do not read the pay column as "data engineers earn more than developers". The titles cover different experience ranges and sample sizes, and AmbitionBox's developer figures come mostly from IT services employees with 3 to 6 years of experience.
For the pipeline side of the work, read our guide to the Snowflake data engineer role. Administrators focus on system roles such as ACCOUNTADMIN, SECURITYADMIN, USERADMIN and SYSADMIN, plus warehouses and resource monitors, while developers usually work inside the roles they are given.
8. How to become a Snowflake developer in 6 steps
Short answer: Learn SQL and data warehousing well, learn Snowflake's core features hands-on, add dbt and basic Python, build two or three portfolio projects on GitHub, consider SnowPro Core, and apply for roles that match your current experience.
The 6 steps
- Get strong at SQL and warehousing. Joins, GROUP BY, CTEs, window functions, MERGE, and star schema basics. If you are unsure where you stand, our Snowflake prerequisites guide has a readiness check.
- Learn Snowflake hands-on. Open a trial account, then work through warehouses, databases and schemas, stages and COPY INTO, JSON with VARIANT, Time Travel, cloning, roles and grants, streams and tasks. Our how to learn Snowflake roadmap gives a week-by-week order.
- Add dbt and Python. dbt and Python each appeared in 9 of the 14 JDs we read. Learn dbt models, tests and snapshots, and enough Python to write a loading script with the Snowflake Python connector.
- Learn cost and performance basics. Auto-suspend, right-sizing warehouses, resource monitors, the Query Profile and clustering decisions. See Snowflake query optimization.
- Build a portfolio. Two or three end-to-end projects on GitHub, each with a README, a diagram in words, the SQL and dbt code, and a short note on cost (see section 9).
- Certify and apply. Consider SnowPro Core, update your resume with Snowflake keywords and measurable results, and practise interviews. Our Snowflake resume guide shows how to write the bullets.
How long it takes depends on your base. Someone with strong SQL can usually learn Snowflake's core features in a few weeks of steady practice. A fresher starting SQL from zero needs longer, because the SQL and modelling foundation takes time.
Your path by background
SQL developers and DBAs have the shortest path: focus on separate compute and storage, credits and ELT with dbt. ETL and Informatica developers shift from transforming in an ETL server to loading raw data and transforming it in Snowflake; some roles, such as TCS's senior Snowflake role, still use Informatica Cloud (IICS) for ingestion. Testers should start with dbt tests and data quality checks, then build small models themselves.
Freshers need honesty about the market. On 25 October 2026 we found no listing titled "Snowflake Trainee" or "Snowflake Intern" on Naukri or LinkedIn, and none of the 14 JDs accepted 0 years. Filtering Naukri's "snowflake" search to 0 years' experience left 589 results, and most were general data or analyst roles that mention Snowflake as one skill. Your realistic entry is an associate data engineer, junior data engineer or data analyst role where Snowflake is a preferred skill. For example, Yotta Techports listed an "Associate Data Forward Deployed Engineer" role in Hyderabad (0 to 3 years) that asked for SQL, Python and "a GitHub with real data projects", with Snowflake, Databricks or BigQuery as good to have. Medpace listed a "Junior Data Engineer" role (0 to 1 years, Navi Mumbai) where Snowflake, Fivetran and dbt were preferred.
9. Portfolio projects that prove you can do the job
Short answer: Build two or three small, complete projects that load data, model it, schedule it and control cost, and publish each on GitHub with a clear README.
Each project maps to duties in the JDs above.
- Retail sales ELT with dbt. Stage daily order CSVs, COPY them into raw tables, and build tested dbt staging and mart models ending in a "sales by region and day" mart.
- Incremental CDC pipeline. A stream on raw orders plus an hourly task that MERGEs into a clean table; show how you handle duplicates and reprocess a bad day with Time Travel.
- JSON event analytics. Load app events into a VARIANT column, flatten them and build a daily active users table.
- Cost and performance case study. Tune one slow query using the Query Profile, record before and after times, and add a resource monitor.
A small, well-explained project beats a large unfinished one. For 20 more ideas with datasets, see our list of Snowflake projects.
10. Certifications that help a Snowflake developer
Short answer: SnowPro Core (COF-C03) is the natural first certification and has no prerequisites; SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer (DEA-C02) is the usual next step and needs an active Core certification.
The official SnowPro certifications page and Snowflake's certification FAQ give these details (October 2026):
- SnowPro Core (COF-C03): 100 questions in 115 minutes, a passing score of 750 on a 0 to 1000 scale, no prerequisites, fee $175 or $140 for exams taken in India (a 20% regional discount)
- SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer (DEA-C02): 65 questions in 115 minutes, $375 or $300 in India, active SnowPro Core required
- Specialty exams such as Gen AI (GES-C02): 55 questions in 85 minutes, $225 or $180 in India, Core not required
- Retiring soon: SnowPro Specialty: Snowpark (SPS-C01) retires on 1 November 2026, so it is not a good new goal
Certifications are valid for 2 years, exams run through Pearson VUE online or at a test centre, and every attempt costs the full fee. Snowflake University's on-demand courses are free, and Snowflake says many Hands-On Essentials badges are free too. There is no free SnowPro exam.
Is certification required? Mostly no. Only 1 of the 14 JDs we read required SnowPro Core (a Hyderabad administrator role at Insight International), and 1 more (Caterpillar) listed it as preferred. It helps a resume screen, but projects and SQL decide interviews. For the full certification path, see our Snowflake certification guide.
11. Interview preparation for Snowflake developer roles
Short answer: Expect a SQL round, a Snowflake concepts round, a scenario or project round, and often a dbt or Python round; prepare with real queries and your own projects, not memorised definitions.
- SQL round: window functions, deduplication, joins, MERGE, reading a slow query
- Snowflake concepts: warehouses and credits, micro-partitions, stages, Snowpipe, streams and tasks, Time Travel, cloning, RBAC
- Scenario round: "a load doubled in time", "a task failed overnight", "costs jumped this month"
- Tools and managerial rounds: dbt, Python, Git, and how you handle requirement changes
Answer scenarios with a simple pattern: what you checked, what you found, what you changed, and how you prevent a repeat. For a broad question bank, use our Snowflake interview questions. For realistic situations with model answers, see Snowflake scenario-based interview questions.
12. Snowflake developer salary snapshot
Short answer: AmbitionBox showed a typical range of ₹8.2 to 9 lakh a year for Snowflake developers in India in October 2026, based on 4.2k salaries mostly from people with 2 to 6 years of experience.
By experience, AmbitionBox's Snowflake Developer page (logged out, 25 October 2026) showed ₹5.1 to 5.9 lakh for 1 to 3 years (130 salaries), ₹7.5 to 8.3 lakh for 3 to 6 years (3.8k salaries) and ₹10.9 to 12.4 lakh for 6 to 9 years (190 salaries). There is no 0 to 1 year band, so no reliable fresher figure. Pay at Snowflake Inc. itself is a different thing from Snowflake developer pay at service firms; do not mix them.
For city-wise, company-wise and data engineer comparisons, read our full Snowflake developer salary in India guide. Hyderabad-specific roles and pay are covered in Snowflake jobs in Hyderabad.
13. Is Snowflake developer a good career in India?
Short answer: Yes, for people who enjoy SQL and data work: demand signals on job portals are strong across major Indian cities, and the skills transfer to data engineering, but entry needs experience or a strong portfolio.
Demand signals (keyword-match counts, not vacancies). On 25 October 2026, a Naukri search for "snowflake developer" showed about 13,717 results, and a search for "snowflake" showed about 25,910 across India. City searches for "snowflake" showed about 8,463 in Bengaluru, 4,969 in Hyderabad, 3,780 in Pune, 3,120 in Chennai and 2,264 in Mumbai. LinkedIn showed 6,000+ results for "Snowflake" in India on the same day. These counts include duplicates, re-posts and listings that mention Snowflake as one skill, and city counts overlap, so do not add them up.
Who had Snowflake developer listings. Listings seen on 25 October 2026 with "Snowflake Developer" in the title included TCS, HCLTech, Infosys ("Snowflake Developer + DBT"), Cognizant, DTCC, Kanerika, Keyloop, Fractal, Zensar, Caterpillar, UST and Merck Healthcare. These are listings on one date, not hiring commitments.
Why the skills last. SQL, modelling and ELT carry over to any cloud data platform, and Snowflake reported more than 14,500 customers in its Q2 fiscal 2027 results (quarter ended 31 July 2026).
What to watch. AI-assisted coding already appears in some JDs. Developers who understand modelling, cost and governance, not only syntax, stay valuable as routine SQL gets easier to generate.
14. Common mistakes aspiring Snowflake developers make
Short answer: The big mistakes are skipping SQL depth, learning only theory, ignoring dbt and cost, chasing certificates without projects, and applying to roles far above your experience.
- Weak SQL. If you cannot write a window function or a MERGE confidently, start there.
- Theory without hands-on work. Interviewers ask what you built.
- Ignoring dbt. It was named in 9 of the 14 JDs we read.
- Forgetting cost. Never setting auto-suspend is a red flag.
- Treating certification as a job guarantee. Only 1 of 14 JDs required it.
- Reading portal counts as vacancies. Use them to compare cities and skills.
- Using outdated names. Say Snowflake CLI, not only SnowSQL; say Snowflake CoWork (formerly Snowflake Intelligence); and do not list Document AI, which Snowflake shut down on 16 March 2026 (its replacement path is AI_EXTRACT).

Frequently asked questions
What does a Snowflake developer do?
A Snowflake developer builds and maintains the data that runs on Snowflake. Daily work includes loading files through stages and Snowpipe, writing SQL transformations and dbt models, creating stored procedures and scheduled tasks, tuning slow queries and controlling warehouse cost. Developers also apply role-based access, review teammates' code, ship changes through Git and CI/CD, and work with analysts and client teams to agree business logic.
What is a Snowflake developer?
A Snowflake developer is a data professional who turns raw data in the Snowflake AI Data Cloud into clean, reliable, query-ready tables. The role is SQL-first and combines data warehousing, data modelling and ELT with Snowflake features such as warehouses, stages, streams, tasks, Time Travel and cloning. In Indian IT services firms and GCCs the title is common, while product companies often call similar work data engineering.
What are the roles and responsibilities of a Snowflake developer?
Responsibilities in the 14 job descriptions we read in October 2026 included building ELT pipelines, loading data with stages, COPY INTO and Snowpipe, writing SQL, views, procedures and UDFs, building dimensional and dbt models, using streams and tasks for change capture, tuning performance, tracking cost and resource monitors, applying role-based access, and deploying code through Git and CI/CD pipelines with proper documentation.
What skills are required for a Snowflake developer?
SQL is essential and appeared in all 14 job descriptions we read. After that, employers most often named dbt and Python, each in 9 of 14, followed by data modelling, Git and CI/CD, Snowpipe, streams and tasks, Time Travel and cost control. Most roles also expect AWS or Azure basics. Clear English and documentation habits matter because many roles serve overseas clients.
How do I become a Snowflake developer?
Follow six steps. Get strong at SQL and data warehousing, learn Snowflake hands-on with a trial account, add dbt and basic Python, learn cost and performance basics, build two or three portfolio projects on GitHub, then consider SnowPro Core and apply for roles that match your experience. SQL developers and ETL developers usually move fastest because their core skills already transfer.
Can a fresher become a Snowflake developer?
Yes, but usually not directly. On 25 October 2026 we found no Snowflake Trainee or Snowflake Intern titles on Naukri or LinkedIn, and none of the 14 job descriptions we read accepted zero years. Freshers usually start as associate or junior data engineers or data analysts where Snowflake is a preferred skill, and they stand out with strong SQL and a GitHub portfolio of real data projects.
Does a Snowflake developer need Python?
Python is not always mandatory, but it is increasingly expected. It appeared in 9 of the 14 job descriptions we read in October 2026, often next to dbt. You need enough Python to write loading or automation scripts with the Snowflake Python connector, and Snowpark Python helps for roles that push DataFrame work into Snowflake. SQL remains the bigger priority for most developer roles.
Is coding required for a Snowflake developer?
Yes. The main coding language is SQL, used for transformations, views, MERGE statements, stored procedures in Snowflake Scripting and tuning. Many roles also ask for Python and for dbt, which uses SQL with Jinja templating. You do not need to be an application developer, but you must be comfortable writing, testing and reviewing code and keeping it in Git.
What is the difference between a Snowflake developer and a Snowflake data engineer?
A Snowflake developer focuses on SQL, data models, procedures, tasks and dbt inside Snowflake, while a Snowflake data engineer owns end-to-end pipelines, including ingestion from many sources, orchestration, change capture and cloud integration. In Indian listings the titles overlap a lot. AmbitionBox showed different typical ranges for the two titles, but they cover different experience bands and sample sizes.
What is the difference between a Snowflake developer and a Snowflake admin?
A developer builds data objects, transformations and scheduled jobs, while an administrator manages the account itself. Admins handle users and roles, role-based access, warehouses and resource monitors, security policies, monitoring and cost governance, and they work with system roles such as ACCOUNTADMIN, SECURITYADMIN and SYSADMIN. Developers usually work within the roles and warehouses the admin team provides.
What is the salary of a Snowflake developer in India?
AmbitionBox showed a typical range of 8.2 to 9 lakh rupees a year for Snowflake developers in India in October 2026, based on 4.2k salaries mostly from people with 2 to 6 years of experience. By band it showed 5.1 to 5.9 lakh for 1 to 3 years and 10.9 to 12.4 lakh for 6 to 9 years. These are typical ranges, not offers, and there is no fresher band.
Is Snowflake developer a good career in India?
It is a good career for people who enjoy SQL and data work. On 25 October 2026 Naukri showed about 13,717 results for snowflake developer, with strong counts in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, although these are keyword matches, not vacancies. The skills of SQL, modelling and ELT transfer to other data platforms, and the path leads to data engineer, lead and architect roles.
Which certification is best for a Snowflake developer?
SnowPro Core (COF-C03) is the best first certification. It has 100 questions in 115 minutes, a passing score of 750 out of 1000, no prerequisites and a fee of 175 dollars, or 140 dollars for exams taken in India. After that, SnowPro Advanced: Data Engineer (DEA-C02) suits developers who want to grow into data engineering, and it requires an active Core certification.
Is SnowPro certification required to get a Snowflake developer job?
Usually not. Of the 14 Snowflake job descriptions we read in October 2026, only one required SnowPro Core, a Hyderabad administrator role, and one more listed Snowflake certification as preferred. The other twelve did not mention it. Certification can help your resume get noticed and gives your learning a structure, but SQL skill, projects and experience decide most interviews.
How long does it take to become a Snowflake developer?
It depends on your starting point. If you already write strong SQL, you can learn Snowflake's core features in a few weeks of steady hands-on practice, then add dbt and projects. A fresher starting SQL from zero needs longer because SQL and data modelling take time to master. Either way, plan for portfolio projects, since the Snowflake-titled roles we saw started at about two years' experience.
What tools does a Snowflake developer use?
Inside Snowflake you use Snowsight, SQL worksheets, Snowflake CLI, stored procedures, streams, tasks, dynamic tables and Snowpark. Around it, developers commonly use dbt for transformations, Git with a CI/CD tool, Airflow or Dagster for orchestration, ingestion tools such as Fivetran or Informatica, Power BI or Tableau for reports, and cloud storage on AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage.
Which companies hire Snowflake developers in India?
On 25 October 2026 we saw listings with Snowflake Developer in the title from TCS, HCLTech, Infosys, Cognizant, DTCC, Kanerika, Keyloop, Fractal, Zensar, Caterpillar, UST and Merck Healthcare. These are listings seen on one date, not hiring commitments. Most demand comes from IT services firms and global capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai.
Is SnowSQL still used by Snowflake developers?
SnowSQL still works, but it is now a legacy client in maintenance mode, and Snowflake CLI is the preferred command-line client for new installs. According to Snowflake's documentation in October 2026, the SnowSQL 1.5.x line is supported until 16 April 2028. You will still see SnowSQL in older projects and job descriptions, so knowing both is useful.
Do Snowflake developers need to know dbt?
In practice, yes, for most roles. dbt was named in 9 of the 14 Snowflake job descriptions we read in October 2026, and many titles now read Snowflake plus DBT. Naukri also showed about 1,729 results for dbt snowflake on 25 October 2026. Learn dbt models, tests, sources and snapshots, and keep your dbt project in Git.
What projects should I build to become a Snowflake developer?
Build two or three small, complete projects. Good choices are a retail sales ELT pipeline with dbt models and tests, an incremental change capture pipeline using a stream, a task and a MERGE, a JSON event analytics project using VARIANT, and a cost and performance case study showing a tuned query and a resource monitor. Publish each on GitHub with a clear README.
Can an Informatica or ETL developer move to Snowflake?
Yes, and it is a natural move. ETL developers already understand pipelines, mappings, scheduling and data quality. The main shift is to ELT, where you load raw data first and transform it inside Snowflake with SQL and dbt. Some Snowflake roles still use Informatica Cloud for ingestion, so your tool knowledge remains useful while you add Git and CI/CD.
Can an ETL tester become a Snowflake developer?
Yes. Testers already use SQL to validate data and think about data quality, which is a strong base. Start by writing dbt tests and data quality checks, then build small models and pipelines yourself so you can show development work, not only testing. A junior Snowflake developer or data quality engineer role is a realistic first step on this path.
What does a Snowflake developer do on a typical day?
A typical day starts with checking overnight loads and fixing any failures, followed by a stand-up call. Most of the day goes into building or changing SQL and dbt models, reviewing teammates' code, tuning slow queries and handling access requests through role-based access. Many developers in India also spend an hour or two in the evening on calls with overseas client teams.
