Quick answer
To get PMP certification, you check that you meet PMI's education and experience rules, complete 35 hours of project management training, apply online to PMI, clear an audit if selected, pay the exam fee, schedule and pass the 180-question exam, and then earn 60 PDUs every three years to keep it. PMI (Project Management Institute) issues the PMP (Project Management Professional) credential. The rules changed in 2026. Experience must now come from leading projects within the last 10 years, and from 1 December 2026 only certain live classes count toward your training hours. Most working professionals finish the whole journey in a few months if they plan well.
- Eligibility: a degree or diploma plus 2 to 5 years of experience leading projects, depending on your education
- Training: 35 hours of project management training, or an active CAPM
- Application: online on the PMI website, with an audit for a random share of applicants
- Exam: 180 questions in 240 minutes, at a Pearson VUE centre or online
- Renewal: 60 PDUs every three years
Key takeaways
- PMI updated the PMP exam in July 2026, with new domain weights and a 10-year window for your experience (PMI, October 2026).
- Your experience must be non-overlapping months spent leading projects. Overlapping projects count only once.
- From 1 December 2026, live classes count toward the 35 hours only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited programme. Self-paced courses from any provider still count.
- Every application can be audited, so keep your degree copy, supervisor contacts and training certificate ready before you apply.
- The exam fee shown to India visitors on PMI's site was ₹27,406 for members and ₹55,488 at full price in October 2026.
1. What PMP certification is and who should get it
Short answer: PMP is PMI's flagship credential for people who lead projects. It is meant for professionals who already have real project leadership experience, not for complete beginners.
The PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is awarded by PMI (Project Management Institute), a global professional body for project management. The credential shows employers that you can lead projects using predictive (plan-based), agile and hybrid ways of working, and that you passed a demanding exam built from real project scenarios.
PMI's own PMP certification page says 1.7M+ PMP holders make it the world's most widely held project certification, and that PMP holders report 17% higher median salaries than those without it (PMI, October 2026). Those numbers come from PMI's global survey, not from an India-only study, so treat them as a general signal rather than a promise for your city or company.
In India, PMP is popular with developers, testers and team leads who now lead delivery, business analysts who run projects, site and project engineers, and operations or BFSI professionals who manage change projects.
If you are a student or a fresher with no project leadership experience, you cannot apply for PMP yet. The usual path is to start with PMI's entry-level CAPM credential and move to PMP later. Our PMP vs CAPM guide explains that path in detail.
2. Step 1: Check your PMP eligibility
Short answer: You need one of four combinations of education and experience leading projects, all within the last 10 years, plus 35 hours of training. Check this honestly before you spend money on anything else.
PMI updated its eligibility rules along with the new exam. According to the PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026 and PMI's PMP page (PMI, October 2026), you must meet ONE of these:
Three rules sit on top of this table:
- Leading, not just working on, projects. The outline asks for experience "leading projects". You do not need the job title "Project Manager", but you must have directed or led project work.
- Within the last 10 years. Only experience from the 10 years before you apply counts.
- No double counting. If you ran two projects at the same time from January to June, that period counts as six months, not twelve.
PMI says the 2026 update also expands eligibility to apprenticeships and training. If you saw older rules online that used different experience figures and a different time window, note that they changed with the July 2026 update. Use PMI's current page as the final word.
For role-by-role examples (developer, tester, BA, site engineer) and how to count your months, read our full guide to PMP certification eligibility.
3. Step 2: Log your project experience
Short answer: Before you open the application, list every project you led in the last 10 years with dates, your role, the team size and the outcome. Then add up only the non-overlapping months.
This step sounds simple but it is where most delays start. PMI asks you to describe each project, and an auditor may later ask your supervisor to confirm it. So build a clean record first.
Create a simple sheet with these columns for each project:
- Project name and organisation
- Start month and end month
- Your role and your manager or sponsor at the time (name and current contact)
- Approach used: predictive, agile or hybrid
- What you led: planning, team, stakeholders, risks, budget, delivery
- Outcome: what was delivered and any measurable result
Then draw the projects on a timeline and mark where they overlap. Count each calendar month only once. If your total is short of the months your education path needs, wait and keep leading projects rather than stretching dates. Offer letters, appraisals and old status reports help you get the dates right.
4. Step 3: Complete 35 contact hours of training
Short answer: You need at least 35 hours of project management training aligned to the exam outline, or an active CAPM. From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited programme. Self-paced courses from any organisation still count.
According to PMI's PMP certification page (PMI, October 2026), the 35 hours can come from:
- An online on-demand (self-paced) class from any organisation
- A live instructor-led class, in person or online
- An active CAPM certification, which gives you the 35-hour credit
From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if they are delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), a China Registered Education Provider (REP), or an eligible accredited higher-education programme, including PMI GAC programmes. Training you complete before 1 December 2026 stays eligible under the current rules.
The exam content outline adds two practical points (PMI, July 2026):
- Reading books or taking practice exams on your own does not count as training.
- Coursework from a GAC-accredited degree can count.
If you plan a live class, ask the provider in writing whether it is a PMI ATP. If it is not, you can still use it for exam preparation and earn your official hours through a qualifying self-paced course or an ATP. Keep every completion certificate, because the audit asks for it.
5. Step 4: Decide whether to take PMI membership
Short answer: PMI members pay a much lower exam fee. Compare the membership fee on PMI's site with the exam saving, and buy membership before you pay the exam fee if it works out cheaper.
The exam fee PMI showed to an India visitor in October 2026 was:
Source: PMI PMP certification page, October 2026. PMI shows prices in your local currency, so the figure you see may differ slightly.
The gap between the two prices is ₹28,082. The membership fee itself is not listed on that page, so check the current membership price on PMI's website before deciding. If membership costs less than that gap, joining first saves money. Membership also lowers the renewal fee later, as you will see in Step 11.
One timing rule matters. The PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026) says membership rates apply only if you hold membership before you pay. Join first, then pay.
For a full cost breakdown, including training, study material, retakes and renewal, see our guide to PMP certification cost in India.
6. Step 5: Apply online on the PMI website
Short answer: Create a free account on pmi.org, start the PMP application, enter your education, your 35 training hours and each project with a short description, then submit. You do not pay the exam fee at this stage.
The online application has three main parts:
- Education: your highest degree or diploma, the institution and the year.
- Training: the course name, the provider, dates and the number of hours.
- Experience: each project with dates, your role, the approach and a short description of what you led.
PMI's PMP page says the exam fee is paid only after your application is accepted and you are ready to schedule (PMI, October 2026). Use the same name as on your government photo ID, copy dates from your Step 2 sheet, and draft descriptions in a text file before pasting them in. After you submit, PMI reviews the application and tells you by email whether it is accepted or selected for audit. Track the status in your PMI account.
7. Step 6: Handle the audit if you are selected
Short answer: Any application can be audited, and a random share is. If you are selected, you get an email before you pay, and you then have 90 days to send copies of your degree, supervisor signatures for your experience and your training certificate.
The PMI Certification Handbook (June 2026) explains how the audit works:
- All applications are subject to audit, and a percentage are selected at random.
- You are told by email before you pay the exam fee.
- PMI asks for copies of your diploma or degree, signatures from your supervisors or managers for the experience you listed, and certificates or letters from your training providers for the 35 hours.
- You have 90 days to submit the documents.
- Once submitted, the audit takes about 5 to 7 business days.
- If you fail or do not comply with the audit, you face a 1-year suspension before you can reapply.
- PMI can audit at any time, even after you are certified.
To stay audit-ready, tell your past managers that PMI may ask them to confirm your work, and keep your degree copy and training certificate in one folder. If your application is honest, the audit is a short administrative step.
8. Step 7: Pay the exam fee
Short answer: Once your application is accepted (and any audit is passed), pay the exam fee online. Your 1-year eligibility period to take the exam starts from this point.
Pay the member or non-member price shown in your account (see Step 4). The handbook says the 1-year eligibility period starts after payment, or after the audit is passed if you were audited (PMI, June 2026). Within that year you must schedule and take the exam. Plan your study so that you are close to ready when you pay, not months away.
9. Step 8: Schedule your PMP exam
Short answer: Book your exam through PMI with Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or as an online proctored exam (OnVue). Pick a date that gives you enough study time, and know the rescheduling rules before you book.
According to the exam content outline (PMI, July 2026), you can take the exam:
- In person at a Pearson VUE test centre. PMI describes this as the recommended option. Some question types, such as hotspot, matching and pull-down list, appear only in the test-centre version.
- Online proctored through OnVue. You take it from home or office with a webcam, a quiet room and a stable internet connection.
Rescheduling and cancellation rules from the PMI Certification Handbook (June 2026):
The rupee figure uses about ₹94.75 per US dollar (Wise mid-market rate, 22 October 2026). Conversions are approximate and your bank's rate will differ.
Tip: book your slot soon after you pay, so you get a date and centre that suit you.
10. Step 9: Prepare for the exam
Short answer: Study the July 2026 exam content outline domain by domain, practise scenario questions in predictive, agile and hybrid settings, and take full-length timed mock exams before your test date.
The July 2026 exam content outline is your syllabus. It sets three domains:
About 40% of questions represent predictive approaches, and the remaining 60% are split between agile and hybrid (PMI, July 2026). The 2026 update also brings AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement into project scenarios, and focuses more on outcomes, value and business impact.
PMI also says that if you are already studying older materials, you can keep going, because the core principles and approaches remain the same. Just add the new topics and practise the new question styles.
A simple preparation plan:
- Read the outline first. List every task and mark the ones you have never done at work.
- Learn one domain at a time. Use your 35-hour course notes and a current reference such as the PMBOK Guide.
- Practise daily. Do 20 to 40 scenario questions a day and read every explanation, including for questions you got right.
- Take full mock exams. Sit at least two or three full 180-question tests under timed conditions.
- Review your weak areas. Go back to the outline for any task where you keep losing marks.
For exam format, scoring and study tips, see our PMP exam guide.
11. Step 10: Take and pass the exam
Short answer: The exam has 180 questions in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks. You can attempt it up to three times within your 1-year eligibility period.
Here is the exam format, as stated in the exam content outline (PMI, July 2026):
The first break comes after the case-study section, and the second about midway through the independent questions. You cannot go back to a section once you start a break, so finish and review each section before you take one.
If you do not pass the first time:
- You may take the exam up to three times within your 1-year eligibility period.
- The handbook says fees must be paid again for the second and third attempts (PMI, June 2026).
- After three failed attempts, you must wait 1 year from your last exam before reapplying for PMP.
- If your 1-year period ends without a pass, you can reapply with no waiting period.
On exam day, carry the ID that matches your PMI account name, budget about 80 seconds per question, and check which approach (predictive, agile or hybrid) each scenario uses before you answer.
12. Step 11: Maintain your PMP with PDUs
Short answer: Your PMP lasts for a three-year cycle. To renew it, earn 60 PDUs (professional development units) in each cycle and pay the renewal fee.
The PMI Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook sets out the rules:
- 60 PDUs every 3 years.
- Education PDUs: at least 35, with at least 8 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen.
- Giving Back PDUs: at most 25.
- Carry over: up to 20 PDUs earned in the last 12 months of a cycle can move into the next cycle.
- Renewal fee: US$60 for PMI members (about ₹5,685) and US$150 for non-members (about ₹14,213), due no later than 90 days after your cycle ends. The rupee figures are estimates at about ₹94.75 per US dollar (Wise, 22 October 2026). The handbook is dated 2022, so check the current fee in your PMI account before you pay.
- Missing the deadline: your credential goes into suspended status for 12 months, and you cannot use the PMP title during that time.
- Records: keep proof of your PDUs for at least 18 months after the cycle ends, because PDU claims can be audited.
The easiest way to stay on track is to earn about 20 PDUs a year through webinars, courses, reading, mentoring and your own project work, and to log them as you go.
13. PMP certification timeline: how long it takes
Short answer: If you already meet the experience rule, a typical working professional can go from starting training to passing the exam in roughly three to five months. Your own pace, audit selection and exam slot availability change this.
The table below is a typical plan, not a PMI rule. The only fixed time limits come from PMI: 90 days to send audit documents, about 5 to 7 business days for the audit review, and a 1-year eligibility period to pass the exam.
To get PMP certification fast without cutting corners, run your training and exam study together, submit the application as soon as your training certificate is ready, and keep your audit folder ready so an audit costs you days, not weeks.
14. How to write project experience descriptions for the PMP application
Short answer: Write each description in plain, first-person sentences that show what you led across the project: the objective, planning, the team, stakeholders, risks and the result. Keep it specific, honest and consistent with what your supervisor would confirm.
These tips are general advice, not an official PMI template.
Use a simple structure for each project:
- Objective: one sentence on what the project had to achieve.
- Your role: what you led, and the size of the team.
- What you did: the main project activities you directed, from start to close.
- Outcome: what was delivered and any result you can state honestly.
Example (a software delivery project, written for illustration):
"Objective: deliver a mobile loan application feature for a retail bank client. Role: I led a cross-functional team of eight developers, testers and a business analyst. I planned releases, set up the sprint cadence with the product owner, managed the risk log, tracked the budget, ran stakeholder reviews with the client and resolved team conflicts on priorities. Outcome: the feature went live on schedule and the client signed off the final release."
Writing tips:
- Use action verbs: led, planned, coordinated, managed, resolved, delivered.
- Mention the approach you used, such as agile sprints, a phased plan or a hybrid model. The 2026 exam covers all three.
- Show leadership, not just tasks. "I ran the daily stand-up" says less than "I led the team through sprint planning and removed blockers".
- Avoid company jargon and long project codes. A reviewer outside your company must understand it.
- Do not copy one description across several projects. Each should reflect what really happened.
- If you use an AI tool to improve grammar, make sure the final text is still your own, true account. You must be able to back every line during an audit.
15. Common PMP application mistakes to avoid
Short answer: The most common mistakes are counting overlapping months twice, describing tasks instead of leadership, using training that does not qualify, and not preparing supervisors for a possible audit.
These are general lessons, not an official PMI list:

Frequently asked questions
What are the steps to get PMP certification?
There are eleven main steps. Check eligibility, log your experience leading projects, complete 35 hours of training, decide on PMI membership, apply online, clear the audit if selected, pay the exam fee, schedule the exam, prepare, pass the 180-question exam, and then earn 60 PDUs every three years to keep the credential active. Doing them in this order avoids wasted fees and delays.
How long does it take to get PMP certification?
If you already meet the experience rule, a typical working professional takes roughly three to five months from starting training to passing the exam. Training can take two to five weeks, focused study six to ten weeks, and an audit about five to seven business days after you submit documents. Your pace, audit selection and exam slot availability change the total time.
Can I get PMP certification without experience?
No. PMP needs experience leading projects within the last 10 years, ranging from 24 to 60 months depending on your education. If you are a student or fresher, start with PMI's entry-level CAPM credential, which needs no experience, and move to PMP once you have led projects for long enough. An active CAPM also gives you the 35-hour training credit later.
Can I get PMP certification for free?
No. You must pay PMI's exam fee, which was ₹27,406 for members and ₹55,488 at full price for India visitors in October 2026. You can keep costs low by choosing a lower-cost qualifying self-paced course for your 35 hours, checking whether membership saves money overall, and passing on the first attempt so you avoid paying again for a retake.
How do I get PMP certification in India?
The process in India is the same as everywhere else, because PMI runs it globally online. Check eligibility, complete 35 qualifying training hours, apply on pmi.org, clear any audit, pay the rupee fee shown to India visitors, and book your exam at a Pearson VUE test centre in your city or online through OnVue. Then renew every three years with 60 PDUs.
Can I take the PMP exam online from home?
Yes. PMI lets you take the PMP exam online proctored through Pearson VUE's OnVue system, or in person at a Pearson VUE test centre, which PMI recommends. For the online exam you need a webcam, a quiet private room and a stable internet connection. Some question types, such as hotspot and pull-down list, appear only in the test-centre version.
Can I get PMP certification without a degree?
Yes. If your highest education is secondary school, such as Class 12 or an equivalent certificate, you need 60 months (5 years) of experience leading projects within the last 10 years. With an associate's degree or vocational diploma you need 48 months. A bachelor's degree lowers the requirement to 36 months, and a GAC-accredited degree to 24 months.
Who can apply for PMP certification?
Anyone who meets one of PMI's four education and experience paths and has 35 hours of project management training can apply. In India this usually includes developers, testers and team leads who now lead delivery, business analysts who run projects, site and project engineers, and operations or BFSI professionals who manage change projects. Job title does not matter; leading projects does.
How much does it cost to get PMP certification in India?
The main cost is the exam fee: PMI showed ₹27,406 for members and ₹55,488 at full price to India visitors in October 2026. Add your training cost, study material, optional membership and, every three years, a renewal fee of US$60 for members or US$150 for non-members, roughly ₹5,685 or ₹14,213 at the October 2026 Wise rate.
How do I get 35 contact hours for PMP?
You can complete an online self-paced course from any organisation, attend a live instructor-led class, or hold an active CAPM. From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China REP or an accredited academic programme. Books and practice exams alone do not count. Keep your completion certificate for a possible audit.
Are all PMP applications audited?
Every application is subject to audit, and PMI selects a percentage at random. You are told by email before you pay the exam fee. PMI audits all applications from its employees and volunteers, and it can audit at any time, even after certification. Keeping your documents ready before you apply means an audit costs you only a few days.
What happens if my PMP application is selected for audit?
You get 90 days to send copies of your degree or diploma, signatures from your supervisors confirming your listed experience, and certificates or letters from your training providers. Once you submit, the audit takes about five to seven business days. If you pass, you can pay and schedule. Your 1-year eligibility period starts after the audit is passed.
What happens if I fail the PMP audit?
If you fail the audit or do not respond with the documents in time, PMI suspends you for one year before you can reapply for PMP. That is why accuracy matters. Count only non-overlapping months from the last 10 years, describe real leadership work, and tell your past supervisors in advance that they may be asked to confirm it.
How do I write project descriptions for the PMP application?
Write each description in plain first-person sentences with four parts: the project objective, your role and team size, what you led from start to close, and the outcome. Use action verbs such as led, planned and resolved, mention the approach you used, and avoid company jargon. Every line should match what your supervisor would confirm in an audit.
How many projects should I include in my PMP application?
Include enough projects to reach the months your education path needs, counting overlapping months only once. There is no reason to list every small task. Focus on projects where you clearly led the work within the last 10 years, and give each one its own honest description rather than copying the same text across several projects.
Can I use AI to write my PMP application?
You can use an AI tool to improve grammar or clarity, but the content must be your own true account of what you led. PMI can audit your application at any time, even after certification, and your supervisors must be able to confirm your work. Copied or invented descriptions risk a failed audit and a one-year suspension.
Should I become a PMI member before applying for PMP?
Check the numbers first. Members paid ₹27,406 for the exam and non-members ₹55,488 for India visitors in October 2026, a gap of ₹28,082. If the current membership fee is lower than that gap, joining saves money, and members also pay a lower renewal fee. Membership rates apply only if you join before you pay the exam fee.
How do I schedule the PMP exam?
After your application is accepted and you pay the fee, book your exam through your PMI account with Pearson VUE, choosing a test centre or the online OnVue option. You must take the exam within your 1-year eligibility period. Book soon after you pay, and pick a date that leaves enough time for full mock exams.
Can I reschedule the PMP exam?
Yes, but plan ahead. Rescheduling or cancelling within 30 days of your appointment costs US$70 plus taxes, about ₹6,633 as an estimate. Within 48 hours of the exam you lose all fees and the ability to reschedule, and a no-show forfeits the entire exam fee. Only book a date once your mock exam scores are steady.
How many times can I take the PMP exam?
You can take the PMP exam up to three times within your 1-year eligibility period, and you pay fees again for the second and third attempts. After three failed attempts, you must wait one year from your last exam before reapplying for PMP. If the eligibility year ends without a pass, you can reapply with no waiting period.
Is it hard to get PMP certification?
It is demanding but achievable with a plan. The exam has 180 scenario-based questions in 240 minutes across People, Process and Business Environment, with about 60% of questions on agile and hybrid approaches. Candidates who study the July 2026 outline domain by domain, practise questions daily and take full timed mock exams give themselves the best chance of passing.
How long is PMP certification valid?
PMP runs in three-year cycles. To keep it active, earn 60 PDUs in each cycle and pay the renewal fee within 90 days after the cycle ends. If you miss the requirements, your credential is suspended for 12 months and you cannot use the PMP title during that time. Keep PDU records for at least 18 months.
How do I maintain my PMP certification with PDUs?
Earn 60 PDUs every three years. At least 35 must be Education PDUs, with at least 8 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, and up to 25 can be Giving Back PDUs. Up to 20 PDUs from the last 12 months of a cycle carry over. Earning about 20 PDUs a year keeps renewal easy.
Can I get PMP certification without taking the exam?
No. Passing the PMP exam is a required step. Even if you meet the education, experience and training rules, PMI awards the credential only after you pass the 180-question exam within your eligibility period. There is no exam waiver for PMP. An active CAPM waives only the 35-hour training requirement, not the exam itself.
Do Brolly Academy's PMP classes count toward the 35 contact hours?
Brolly Academy's PMP course in Hyderabad offers 35 contact hours of instructor-led training over four weeks, and it is designed as exam preparation and skills training. From 1 December 2026, PMI counts live-class hours only from Authorized Training Partners or accredited programmes, so confirm with PMI's rules which course you will use to meet the official requirement before you apply.
