Quick answer
To be eligible for the PMP certification, you need a mix of education, experience leading projects within the last 10 years, and at least 35 hours of project management training (or an active CAPM). PMI (Project Management Institute) sets four paths. A bachelor's degree holder needs 3 years (36 months) of experience leading projects, while a secondary school graduate needs 5 years (60 months). Your experience months cannot overlap, and they must fall within the 10 years before you apply (PMI, October 2026).
- Secondary school (Class 12, high school or GED): 5 years (60 months) leading projects
- Associate's degree or vocational diploma: 4 years (48 months) leading projects
- Bachelor's degree or higher: 3 years (36 months) leading projects
- Degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme: 2 years (24 months) leading projects
- Plus, on every path: 35 hours of project management training, or an active CAPM
Key takeaways
- PMI updated the PMP exam in July 2026 and expanded eligibility, including a 10-year window for experience (PMI, October 2026).
- Your experience must be in leading projects, and overlapping projects count only once.
- The 35 training hours must come from real training aligned to the exam outline. Books and practice exams alone do not count.
- From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an eligible accredited programme delivers them. Self-paced courses from any organisation still count.
- Freshers cannot apply for the PMP yet. The CAPM is PMI's entry-level route, and an active CAPM also covers the 35-hour training need for the PMP later.
1. What is PMP certification eligibility?
Short answer: PMP certification eligibility is the set of conditions PMI checks before it lets you book the exam: your education level, your months of experience leading projects, and your 35 hours of training.
PMP stands for Project Management Professional. It is a global certification run by PMI (Project Management Institute). Unlike many IT certifications, you cannot simply pay a fee and sit the exam. You first submit an online application that shows you meet the eligibility rules. PMI reviews it, may audit it, and only then lets you pay and schedule the exam.
Eligibility has three parts:
All three must be in place when you apply. If you want the full journey from application to exam day, read our step-by-step guide on how to get PMP certification. This article stays focused on one question: do you qualify, and if not, what do you need to do?
2. The 2026 PMP eligibility criteria at a glance
Short answer: PMI gives four education paths. The higher your education, the fewer months of project leadership you need, but every path also needs 35 hours of training or an active CAPM.
PMI changed the PMP exam and its eligibility in July 2026. According to PMI's new PMP exam page (October 2026), the update "expands eligibility to apprenticeships and training, with a 10-year window for experience". The older rules used a different structure, so ignore any blog or video from before mid-2026 that quotes old month counts or time windows.
Here are the current paths, as listed on PMI's PMP certification page and in the PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026 (PMI, October 2026):
Two rules apply to every path:
- The 10-year window: your experience must fall within the 10 years before you apply.
- No double-counting: if two projects ran at the same time, those months count only once.
GAC stands for PMI's Global Accreditation Center. It accredits certain university degree programmes in project management. Most Indian B.Tech, B.Com, BBA or MBA programmes are not GAC-accredited, so most Indian graduates fall on the 36-month path. If you think your programme might be accredited, check with your university before you count on the 24-month path.
3. Education paths explained for Indian qualifications
Short answer: Most Indian graduates (B.Tech, B.E., B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, BCA) and postgraduates (M.Tech, MBA, MCA) use the bachelor's path and need 36 months of experience leading projects. Class 12 pass candidates use the secondary path and need 60 months.
PMI writes its rules in global terms, so here is how they usually map to common Indian qualifications. Treat this as a practical guide, not an official PMI ruling. If your qualification is unusual, confirm with PMI before you apply.
A note on diplomas
Many people ask whether a diploma holder can apply for PMP. Yes, they can. The question is which path they fall on. PMI describes the middle tier as an associate's degree or vocational trade school diploma, and its exam outline links it to EQF level 5. A three-year polytechnic diploma may fit here, but PMI makes the final call. If PMI treats your diploma as secondary level, you need 60 months instead of 48. Plan for the longer number until PMI confirms otherwise.
A note on postgraduate degrees
An MBA or M.Tech does not reduce the experience you need below 36 months. "Bachelor's degree or higher" is one tier. The only degree that cuts the requirement to 24 months is one from a GAC-accredited programme.
4. What counts as project experience?
Short answer: PMI counts time you spent leading projects. That means guiding the work, the people or the decisions on a temporary piece of work with a clear goal, a start and an end. You do not need the job title "Project Manager".
PMI's July 2026 exam outline uses the words "leading projects". This is the most important phrase in the whole eligibility section. Simply working on a project as a team member is usually not enough. You need to show that you led some part of it.
What a project is, in plain terms
A project is temporary work with a start, an end and a specific result. Building a new mobile app, migrating a data centre, launching a branch office, rolling out a new HR system and constructing a building are projects. Running payroll every month, answering support tickets or doing routine maintenance is ongoing operations, not a project. If your role is mostly operations, look for the improvement or change projects inside it.
What "leading" can look like
You do not need to be the named project manager. Leading can include:
- Planning the work, setting timelines or breaking work into tasks
- Coordinating a team, a vendor or another department
- Tracking progress, risks and issues and taking action on them
- Managing stakeholders, running review meetings and reporting status
- Making or driving decisions on scope, quality or priorities
- Leading a sprint team, a workstream, a module or a phase of a larger project
Predictive, agile and hybrid all count
The 2026 exam outline says about 40% of exam items represent predictive approaches, and the other 60% are split between agile and hybrid approaches (PMI, July 2026). That reflects how projects run today. Experience as a Scrum Master, a team lead in sprints or a lead on a hybrid programme is project leadership experience too, as long as you describe the leading part clearly. If you are weighing a Scrum role against a PM role, our comparison of Scrum Master vs Project Manager explains the difference.
What usually does not count: pure operations work, time spent only as a contributor with no planning or decision role, and anything older than 10 years before you apply.
5. How to count your months correctly
Short answer: List each project with its start and end month, keep only the months inside the 10 years before you apply, and count months where projects overlap only once. The total must reach 60, 48, 36 or 24 months depending on your education.
PMI states clearly that experience must be within the last 10 years, with no double-counting of overlapping projects (PMI PMP page, October 2026). This trips up many applicants, especially in Indian IT services, where people often work on two or three client projects at the same time.
The overlap rule with an example
Say you hold a B.Tech, so you need 36 months. Your history looks like this:
On paper that is 36 months. But Project A and Project B overlapped from July 2023 to December 2023, which is 6 months. Those 6 months count once, not twice. Your real total is 30 months, so you are 6 months short. You would need to keep leading projects for another 6 months, or add another project from a non-overlapping period inside the 10-year window.
A simple method: list every project from the last 10 years where you had a leading role, draw them on one month-by-month timeline, count each calendar month once if any project was running, and compare the total with your path. Keep this sheet for your application and for any audit.
You do not need to be in a project role today. Past experience counts as long as it falls within the 10 years before you apply.
6. The 35 contact hours: what counts
Short answer: You need at least 35 hours of project management training aligned to the PMP exam outline. An online on-demand course from any organisation, a live instructor-led class, or an active CAPM certification all meet the need. Books and practice exams alone do not count.
PMI's PMP certification page (October 2026) lists three ways to meet the training requirement:
- An online on-demand class from any organisation
- A live instructor-led class, in person or online (see the 1 December 2026 change in the next section)
- An active CAPM certification, which gives you credit for the 35 hours
The exam outline adds a few more details (PMI, July 2026):
- The training should align with the PMP Examination Content Outline.
- Reading books or doing practice exams on your own does not count as training.
- Coursework from a PMI GAC-accredited programme can also count.
Keep your course certificate with the provider, dates and hours, pick a course that covers the current outline (People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%, per PMI, July 2026), and finish the hours before you apply. Extra hours do not reduce your experience requirement.
7. The 1 December 2026 training rule change
Short answer: From 1 December 2026, live classes (in person or online) count toward the 35 hours only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher-education programme delivers them. Self-paced courses from any organisation still count.
This is the biggest practical change for Indian applicants in late 2026. According to the PMI PMP page (October 2026), live classes delivered after that date must come from one of these:
- A PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP)
- A China Registered Education Provider (REP)
- An eligible accredited higher-education programme, including PMI GAC programmes
PMI's new exam page (October 2026) also says training completed before 1 December 2026 stays eligible under the current rules.
What this means for you
Many good classes help you learn and pass the exam even if they are not ATP programmes. That is fine for preparation. Just make sure that the hours you list on your PMP application come from a source PMI accepts on the date you took the training.
8. Can freshers apply for PMP? The honest answer and the CAPM path
Short answer: No. Every PMP path needs at least 24 months of experience leading projects, and most Indian graduates need 36. Freshers should start with PMI's CAPM, which needs no experience and later covers the 35-hour training requirement for the PMP.
It is better to hear this now than after paying for a course. A fresh graduate with no project leadership experience cannot meet the PMP rules. There is no shortcut, and inventing or stretching experience is risky because PMI can audit any application, even after you are certified.
The CAPM route
CAPM stands for Certified Associate in Project Management. It is PMI's entry-level certification. According to PMI's CAPM page (October 2026), CAPM eligibility is:
- A secondary degree (high school diploma, GED or global equivalent)
- At least 18 years of age
- At least 23 hours of project management education before the exam
- No project experience needed
The CAPM exam has 150 questions (135 scored and 15 unscored pretest questions) in 180 minutes (PMI, October 2026).
How CAPM connects to PMP
PMI's exam outline says an active CAPM gives you credit for the 35 hours of training (PMI, July 2026). So a sensible plan for a fresher looks like this:
- Earn the CAPM in your first year of work.
- Take on project coordination and leadership tasks at your job.
- Track your months carefully from day one.
- Apply for the PMP once you reach 36 months (or 60 months if you have a Class 12 qualification), while your CAPM is still active.
For a side-by-side look at both credentials, read our guide on PMP vs CAPM.
9. Eligibility examples for common Indian roles
Short answer: Developers, testers, business analysts and site engineers can all qualify, but only for the months where they led part of a project. The job title matters less than what you actually did.
Here are four realistic examples. They show how to think about your own experience. They are illustrations, not PMI rulings.
Software developer
Ravi has a B.Tech and 6 years at an IT services company. For the first 2 years he only wrote code. For the last 4 years he has been a module lead: he plans sprint tasks for 4 developers, estimates work, tracks blockers and reports to the delivery manager.
- Likely countable: the 4 years as module lead, if the projects did not overlap
- Path: bachelor's, needs 36 months
- Result: likely eligible. He should describe his planning, coordination and reporting, not his coding.
Software tester
Priya has a B.Sc and 5 years in testing. For 3 years she has been the test lead on release projects. She writes the test plan, sets the test schedule, assigns work to 3 testers, tracks defects with the development team and signs off on releases.
- Likely countable: the 3 years as test lead
- Path: bachelor's, needs 36 months
- Result: likely eligible, if the months reach 36 after removing overlaps. She should describe how she led the testing phase of each project.
Business analyst
Arjun has an MBA and 4 years as a business analyst in banking projects. He runs requirement workshops, manages stakeholder sign-offs, tracks change requests and coordinates user acceptance testing with business teams.
- Likely countable: the projects where he led requirements, stakeholder engagement and UAT coordination
- Path: bachelor's or higher, needs 36 months
- Result: possibly eligible. He must show leadership of project work, not just documentation. If you are choosing between a BA credential and the PMP, our guide to business analyst certification can help.
Civil site engineer
Suresh has a polytechnic diploma in civil engineering and 7 years on construction sites. For the last 5 years he has been in charge of building blocks on residential projects: he plans daily work, coordinates contractors, tracks material, handles safety and reports progress to the project manager.
- Likely countable: the 5 years in charge of site work on defined projects
- Path: possibly associate or vocational (48 months), or secondary (60 months) if PMI classifies the diploma that way
- Result: likely eligible either way, because 5 years equals 60 months. He should still confirm that the months do not overlap.
In every example, the person counts only the time they led something, removes overlapping months, and writes about planning, coordinating, deciding and reporting.
10. The PMI audit: what it is and how to prepare
Short answer: Every PMP application can be audited, and PMI picks a percentage at random. If you are selected, you get an email before you pay, and you then have 90 days to send copies of your degree, signed confirmation of your experience from supervisors, and proof of your 35 hours.
The audit is how PMI checks that your eligibility claims are true. The details below come from the PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026, checked October 2026).
How the audit works
- All applications are subject to audit, and a percentage are selected at random.
- PMI tells you by email if you are selected, before you pay the exam fee.
- You get 90 days to submit the audit documents.
- Once you submit, the audit takes about 5 to 7 business days.
- PMI audits all applications from its employees and volunteers, and it can audit at any time, even after certification.
What PMI asks for
What happens if you fail the audit
If you fail the audit or do not comply, PMI suspends you for one year before you can apply again (PMI Certification Handbook, June 2026). That is a long delay, so prepare as if you will be audited.
To be audit-ready, tell your managers you are applying and confirm they will sign, keep your certificates scanned, and write every description in words your manager would agree with.
11. After you are eligible: application, fees and the one-year window
Short answer: Once PMI accepts your application (and you pass any audit), you pay the exam fee, then you have one year to take the exam, with up to three attempts in that year.
Eligibility is only the first gate. Here is what follows, in brief:
- Exam fee: PMI showed an India visitor a member price of ₹27,406 and a full price of ₹55,488 (PMI PMP page, October 2026). You pay only after your application is accepted.
- One-year window: the eligibility period starts after payment, or after you pass the audit if you were selected (PMI Certification Handbook, June 2026). PMI's new exam page says you will have a year to schedule and study (PMI, October 2026).
- Attempts: you can take the exam up to three times within that one-year period. After three failed attempts, you must wait one year from your last exam before reapplying for PMP (PMI, July 2026).
- If the year ends without a pass: you reapply, with no waiting period (PMI, July 2026).
For the full cost picture, including membership and renewal, see our guide to PMP certification cost.
12. Common eligibility mistakes to avoid
Short answer: The most common mistakes are counting overlapping months twice, listing team-member work as leadership, using experience older than 10 years, relying on books as training, and writing vague project descriptions.
These are general lessons, not PMI statistics, but they cause most of the trouble applicants face.
- Counting overlaps twice. Two projects in the same six months give you six months, not twelve.
- Calling contribution "leadership". Describe what you led. If you only executed tasks, that time may not count.
- Going outside the 10-year window. Experience from 11 years ago does not count, however senior it was.
- Using the wrong training. Self-study with a book or a mock-test app is not training. After 1 December 2026, a live class must come from an accepted provider.
- Writing vague descriptions. "Worked on a banking project" says nothing. Say what you planned, coordinated, tracked and delivered.
- Not warning your managers. An audit needs their signatures. A surprised manager can delay you by weeks.
- Following old rules. Many websites still show pre-2026 rules. Always check PMI's own pages before you apply.
If you know your path, have counted your non-overlapping months, hold accepted training or an active CAPM, and your managers will sign, you are ready to apply.
13. How Brolly Academy helps
Short answer: Brolly Academy's PMP course is exam preparation and skills training in Hyderabad and online. It helps you understand the current exam outline and prepare to pass, but you must check separately that your training hours meet PMI's rules.
Here is what Brolly's PMP certification course in Hyderabad offers, according to the course page (October 2026):
- Format: 35 contact hours of instructor-led training over 4 weeks
- Modes: classroom and online, with weekday and weekend batches
- Next batch: Monday, 2 November 2026
- Trainer: Mr. Raju, a PMP trainer with 15+ years of experience
- Syllabus: 13 modules, including predictive, agile and hybrid project management, AI in project management, leadership and business environment, risk, quality, stakeholders and PMP exam preparation
- Fees: from ₹10,999 for the video recording plan; online course ₹30,000; classroom training ₹40,000; EMI available
An important note on PMI's 35-hour rule
Brolly's course page does not say that Brolly is a PMI Authorized Training Partner. From 1 December 2026, PMI counts live-class hours only from ATPs, China REPs or accredited academic programmes. So treat Brolly's course as exam preparation and skills training. Before you apply, confirm with PMI which of your training hours meet its requirement on the date you trained.

Frequently asked questions
What is the eligibility for PMP certification?
You need one of four education levels plus matching experience leading projects in the last 10 years, and 35 hours of training or an active CAPM. A secondary school graduate needs 60 months, an associate or vocational diploma holder needs 48 months, a bachelor's degree holder needs 36 months, and a graduate of a PMI GAC-accredited degree needs 24 months of experience.
What is the PMP certification eligibility in India?
The rules in India are the same as everywhere else, because PMI sets one global standard. Most Indian graduates with a B.Tech, B.Com, B.Sc, BBA or MBA use the bachelor's path and need 36 months of experience leading projects within 10 years, plus 35 hours of training or an active CAPM.
Do I qualify for PMP certification?
You qualify if your education, months of project leadership and training all meet one PMI path. Find your education tier, count the months you led projects in the last 10 years with overlaps removed, and confirm you have 35 hours of accepted training or an active CAPM. If all three match, you can apply.
How many years of experience do I need for PMP?
It depends on your education. You need 5 years with a secondary school qualification, 4 years with an associate's degree or vocational diploma, 3 years with a bachelor's degree or higher, and 2 years with a degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme. All of it must be experience leading projects within the last 10 years.
Is 36 months of experience required for PMP?
Yes, for most graduates. If you hold a bachelor's degree or higher that is not from a PMI GAC-accredited programme, you need 36 months of experience leading projects. Class 12 pass candidates need 60 months, associate or vocational diploma holders need 48 months, and GAC-accredited degree holders need 24 months.
Can freshers apply for PMP certification?
No. Every PMP path needs at least 24 months of experience leading projects, and most Indian graduates need 36 months. Freshers should start with PMI's CAPM certification, which needs no project experience. An active CAPM also covers the 35-hour training requirement when you later apply for the PMP.
Can a diploma holder apply for PMP?
Yes. PMI has a path for an associate's degree or vocational trade school diploma that needs 48 months of experience leading projects. Whether your Indian polytechnic diploma fits this tier is PMI's decision. If PMI treats it as secondary level, you need 60 months instead, so plan for the longer number until PMI confirms.
Can I get PMP without a degree?
Yes. PMI accepts a high school diploma, GED, or secondary or upper school certificate. On this path you need 60 months, or 5 years, of experience leading projects within the last 10 years, plus 35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM. The exam is the same for every path.
Does an MBA reduce the PMP experience requirement?
No. An MBA, M.Tech or other postgraduate degree falls in the same "bachelor's degree or higher" tier, so you still need 36 months of experience leading projects. Only a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme reduces the requirement, to 24 months.
What counts as project management experience for PMP?
PMI counts time spent leading projects. That includes planning work, coordinating a team or vendor, tracking progress and risks, managing stakeholders and driving decisions on temporary work with a clear goal. You do not need the title Project Manager. Routine operations and pure contributor work usually do not count.
Do I need the job title Project Manager to apply for PMP?
No. PMI looks at what you did, not your title. A module lead, test lead, business analyst, Scrum Master or site engineer can qualify if they led part of a project. Your project descriptions should show planning, coordinating, tracking and decision-making, and your managers should be willing to confirm them.
What is the 10-year window for PMP experience?
Your experience leading projects must fall within the 10 years before you apply. PMI introduced this window as part of the July 2026 update. Experience older than 10 years does not count, no matter how senior it was, so count only the months inside that period.
How does PMI treat overlapping projects?
Overlapping months count only once. If you led two projects at the same time for six months, you get six months of experience, not twelve. Draw your projects on one month-by-month timeline and count each calendar month once to find your real total before you apply.
Does agile or Scrum experience count for PMP?
Yes, if you led the work. The July 2026 exam outline says about 40% of items cover predictive approaches and the remaining 60% are split between agile and hybrid. Leading a sprint team, a workstream or a hybrid programme counts as project leadership if your description shows what you led.
What are the 35 contact hours for PMP?
They are at least 35 hours of project management training aligned to the PMP exam outline. You can meet them with an online on-demand course from any organisation, a live instructor-led class, or an active CAPM. Reading books or doing practice exams on your own does not count as training.
What changes for PMP training hours from 1 December 2026?
From 1 December 2026, live classes count only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited higher-education programme delivers them. Self-paced courses from any organisation still count, and training completed before 1 December 2026 stays eligible under the current rules.
Does CAPM count toward PMP eligibility?
An active CAPM gives you credit for the 35 hours of training, so you do not need another course for eligibility. It does not replace experience. You still need the months of project leadership for your education path, such as 36 months with a bachelor's degree, within the last 10 years.
What is the eligibility for CAPM?
CAPM needs a secondary degree such as a high school diploma or GED, a minimum age of 18, and at least 23 hours of project management education before the exam. No project experience is needed, which is why CAPM suits freshers who want to start a project management career early.
Is there an age limit for PMP certification?
PMI's PMP criteria are built on education, experience and training rather than an age limit. In practice, you need years of experience leading projects, so most candidates are working professionals. For CAPM, PMI sets a minimum age of 18, with no experience needed.
What is the PMP application audit?
It is PMI's check that your application is true. All applications can be audited and a percentage are picked at random. If you are selected, PMI emails you before you pay, and you send copies of your degree, supervisor signatures for your experience, and training certificates within 90 days.
How long does the PMP audit take?
You have 90 days to submit your audit documents. Once PMI receives them, the audit takes about 5 to 7 business days. Having your managers ready to sign and your certificates scanned before you apply is the best way to finish quickly if you are selected.
What happens if I fail the PMP audit?
If you fail the audit or do not respond, PMI suspends you for one year before you can apply again. PMI can also audit at any time, even after you are certified. Write every description truthfully and make sure your managers will confirm your experience.
How long is PMP eligibility valid after approval?
You get one year. The eligibility period starts after you pay the exam fee, or after you pass the audit if you were selected. Within that year you can take the exam up to three times. If the year ends without a pass, you reapply with no waiting period.
Is Brolly Academy's PMP course enough to meet the 35-hour requirement?
Brolly's course gives 35 contact hours of instructor-led training over 4 weeks, but its course page does not say Brolly is a PMI Authorized Training Partner. From 1 December 2026, PMI counts live-class hours only from accepted providers, so treat the course as exam preparation and confirm accepted training hours with PMI.
Does Brolly Academy help me check my PMP eligibility?
Yes. Brolly Academy's PMP team in Hyderabad can walk through your education and experience with you and help you plan your preparation for the 2026 exam. The final decision is always PMI's, so check your months, overlaps and training hours against PMI's official rules before you apply.
