AML Career 2026 guide by Brolly Academy

Quick answer

Yes, AML is a good career in India for graduates who like careful, rule-based investigation work, because every bank and regulated financial firm must run anti money laundering checks by law, and the work offers a clear ladder from analyst to compliance leadership. Most people start as a KYC or AML analyst, move into transaction monitoring, sanctions or investigations, and then grow into quality, team lead, manager or advisory roles. Pay starts modest and grows with skill. AmbitionBox's lowest reported band, 1–3 years, was about ₹3.8–4.9 lakh a year for KYC and AML analysts in October 2026, and AML managers reported about ₹10.9–12.1 lakh a year.

  • Main entry roles: KYC analyst, CDD analyst, transaction monitoring analyst (L1), sanctions screening analyst
  • Main growth paths: investigations, quality assurance, advisory and consulting, regtech, compliance management
  • Where the jobs are: banks, global banks' centres in Indian cities, Big Four and consulting firms, BPO and KPO firms, fintechs
  • Who it suits: B.Com, BBA, MBA and other graduates, bank and BPO staff, anyone who reads carefully and writes clearly
  • What it does not need: a finance degree, coding, or a certification on day one

Key takeaways

  1. AML work exists because the law requires it. Under the PMLA, reporting entities must verify customers, keep records and report to FIU-IND, so the work does not disappear in a slow year.
  2. There are at least eight distinct AML career paths. You do not have to stay in KYC forever; you can move into monitoring, sanctions, investigations, QA, consulting, regtech or compliance management.
  3. Salaries start modest and grow with experience. AmbitionBox shows AML analysts at about ₹4.5–4.9 lakh a year at 1–3 years and ₹8.4–9.4 lakh at 6–9 years (October 2026).
  4. Most job descriptions ask for "any graduate", and certifications such as CAMS are listed as "good to have", not mandatory, in the listings we read in October 2026.
  5. The honest trade-off: early roles can be repetitive, target-driven and on night or rotational shifts. People who build investigation, writing and data skills move up fastest.

1. AML career at a glance

Short answer: An AML career is a career in stopping criminals from moving dirty money through the financial system; you start by checking customers and alerts, and you grow into investigating cases, checking others' work, advising firms or running compliance teams.

Use this table as your quick map before you read the details.

Question Short answer What is the work? Checking customers (KYC), reviewing alerts, investigating unusual activity, writing case notes and supporting suspicious transaction reports Who hires? Indian and foreign banks, global banks' centres, Big Four and consulting firms, BPO and KPO firms, fintech and payment companies Entry qualification Mostly "any graduate" in the listings we read on 24 October 2026; some prefer commerce or finance Starting pay About ₹3.8–4.9 lakh a year for KYC and AML analysts at 1–3 years (AmbitionBox, October 2026) Pay at manager level About ₹10.9–12.1 lakh a year for AML managers, small sample of 40 salaries (AmbitionBox, October 2026) Main cities Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Gurugram, Chennai, Noida Certifications IIBF AML/KYC for beginners, CAMS later; usually "good to have" Biggest downside Repetitive early work, productivity targets and shifts

2. What is an AML career?

Short answer: An AML career is any job where you help a bank or financial firm detect, prevent or report money laundering, from the analyst who checks a customer's documents to the head of financial crime who answers to the regulator.

AML stands for anti money laundering. Money laundering is the process of making money from crime look like it came from a legal source. AML is the set of laws, rules and checks that stop it. If you want the full basics first, read our guide to anti money laundering, which covers the stages, Indian law and core processes.

An AML career sits inside a bank's or firm's compliance and operations teams. Here are the words you will hear every day, explained in plain English:

  • KYC (Know Your Customer): checking who the customer is, using documents and records
  • CDD (Customer Due Diligence): understanding the customer's business, source of funds and expected activity
  • EDD (Enhanced Due Diligence): deeper checks for high-risk customers, with more documents and senior approval
  • PEP (Politically Exposed Person): a person with a prominent public role, or their close family and associates, who needs extra checks
  • Sanctions: government and UN lists of people, firms and countries you must not deal with
  • Alert: a flag raised by monitoring or screening software that an analyst must review
  • False positive: an alert that turns out to be normal activity after review
  • Typology: a known pattern or method of laundering, such as splitting cash deposits
  • STR (Suspicious Transaction Report): the report a firm files with the government when it suspects money laundering
  • CTR (Cash Transaction Report): a report of large cash transactions
  • FIU-IND: the Financial Intelligence Unit of India, which receives these reports
  • FATF: the Financial Action Task Force, the global body that sets AML standards
  • L1, L2, L3: levels of review. L1 does the first check of an alert, L2 investigates escalated cases, and L3 handles the most complex cases and final decisions

Put simply, the job is to ask "does this make sense?", find evidence, and write a clear decision someone else can follow.

3. Why AML jobs exist: the demand drivers

Short answer: AML jobs exist because Indian law and global standards force banks and other reporting entities to check customers, monitor transactions and report suspicious activity, and global banks run much of that work from Indian cities.

Driver 1: the law makes it compulsory

India's main AML law is the Prevention of Money-laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA). According to the text published on the FIU-IND website, it came into force on 1 July 2005. Chapter IV of the Act requires banks, financial institutions, intermediaries and certain designated businesses to verify clients, maintain records and furnish information to FIU-IND.

FIU-IND itself was set up by the Government of India through an Office Memorandum dated 18 November 2004, according to the FIU-IND About page (October 2026). It receives and analyses reports from reporting entities.

These reports create steady daily work. FIU-IND's FAQs (October 2026) say an STR must be filed promptly, and not later than 7 working days after the firm is satisfied a transaction is suspicious, with no minimum amount. Cash transactions above ₹10 lakh go in a monthly CTR. Records must be kept for five years. Every one of those duties needs trained people.

Driver 2: the RBI's detailed KYC rules

The RBI turns the PMLA duties into detailed rules. On 28 November 2025, it issued consolidated KYC Directions. For commercial banks, the current text is the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Know Your Customer) Directions, 2025, updated as on 1 October 2026 (RBI, October 2026). These rules require banks to:

  • Classify every customer as low, medium or high risk
  • Update KYC at least once every 2 years for high-risk customers, every 8 years for medium-risk and every 10 years for low-risk customers
  • Apply extra checks and senior approval for PEPs
  • Check UN Security Council sanctions lists daily
  • Monitor for money mule accounts
  • Name a Principal Officer, who reports to FIU-IND, and a Designated Director, who is responsible for overall compliance

Periodic re-KYC alone means a constant stream of customer files to review. That is one reason KYC analyst is the biggest entry role.

Driver 3: global standards and global banks

The FATF, established in 1989, sets the 40 Recommendations that countries build their AML laws on, and India has been a member since 2010 (FATF website, October 2026). India's latest FATF assessment was published in September 2024. Countries and banks that fall short face pressure, so they invest in compliance.

Global banks also run large KYC and AML operations from India. A JPMorganChase senior KYC listing seen on 24 October 2026 described teams "across Hyderabad and Bengaluru" doing KYC renewals and onboarding for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Listings from State Street, Bank of America, Citco and Guidehouse in Hyderabad, and Deutsche Bank, Northern Trust and BNP Paribas elsewhere, show the same pattern (seen 24 October 2026).

What the job portals show

Job portal numbers give a rough sense of scale, not an exact count of AML jobs. On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 16,323 results for "aml" across India and about 14,972 results for "kyc aml". LinkedIn showed "3,000+" results for "AML" in India on the same day. These are keyword-match counts. They change daily, include duplicates and pull in loosely related roles, so the real number of AML and KYC roles is smaller.

City Naukri results for "aml" (24 October 2026) Bengaluru about 2,483 Mumbai about 2,371 Pune about 1,332 Hyderabad about 1,163 Gurugram about 1,103 Chennai about 1,008 Noida about 654

A note on scope: this guide explains the law only to show why the jobs exist. It is education, not legal advice, so check the current Act, RBI notification or a lawyer for any specific case.

4. The 8 AML career paths

Short answer: The eight main AML career paths are KYC and CDD, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, investigations, quality assurance, advisory and consulting, regtech and AML technology, and compliance management; most people enter through the first three and branch out later.

Career path What you do Typical entry titles Best background KYC and CDD Verify customers, check ownership, rate risk, run re-KYC and EDD KYC analyst, CDD analyst, client onboarding analyst Any graduate, commerce helps Transaction monitoring Review alerts from monitoring software, close or escalate TM analyst L1, AML analyst Any graduate who likes numbers Sanctions screening Review name and payment matches against sanctions and PEP lists Screening analyst, sanctions analyst Graduates with sharp attention to detail Investigations Investigate escalated cases, follow the money, write STR narratives L2 analyst, AML investigator, FinCrime analyst Two or more years of KYC or TM Quality assurance Check other analysts' cases for accuracy and policy QA analyst, QC analyst Experienced analysts Advisory and consulting Review client programmes, run remediation projects, advise Associate or senior in a Big Four FinCrime team Analysts with three or more years and strong writing Regtech and AML technology Build, configure, test or tune AML software, analyse alert data AML developer, business analyst, analytics consultant Engineers, data analysts, BAs Compliance management Run teams, own policy, report to regulators Team lead, AML manager, compliance officer Seven or more years plus certification

KYC and CDD

This is the largest entry door. You review documents, check beneficial owners and rate the customer's risk. A Wipro "Analyst (KYC/AML)" listing in Gurugram (1–4 years) listed client onboarding, KYC and CDD reviews, document verification and data validation, with key skills KYC, AML, CDD, EDD and PEP (listing seen on 24 October 2026). Wholesale KYC, on companies, funds and trusts, is harder and usually pays more than retail KYC.

Transaction monitoring

You work an alert queue. Each alert means a rule fired, for example a run of cash deposits or money moving in and out fast. You check the customer's profile and history, then close the alert or escalate it. Deutsche Bank's "AML Monitoring & Screening Control Support" listing (0–3 years, Jaipur and Bengaluru) described reviewing APAC monitoring alerts at L1 and named the Actimize, Fircosoft and Mantas platforms (listing seen on 24 October 2026). Our guide to the AML analyst role walks through a full day in this kind of job.

Sanctions screening

You review matches between customer or payment names and sanctions or PEP lists, and decide whether each match is real. The Wise "FinCrime Operations Analyst - AML Investigations" listing in Hyderabad, marked "Entry level" on LinkedIn, asked candidates to review sanctions matches and AML alerts and keep up with OFAC, EU and UK sanctions (Wise listing on LinkedIn, seen 24 October 2026). On Naukri, "sanctions screening" showed only about 294 results on the same day, so it is a smaller, more specialist path.

Investigations

Investigators take escalated cases, search open sources, link accounts and write narratives that support STR decisions. Guidehouse's Hyderabad walk-in for KYC, AML and TMS roles (2–6 years) listed L2 alert investigation and SAR/STR narratives (listing seen on 24 October 2026). SAR, suspicious activity report, is the US and UK name for an STR. Writing is the core skill here.

Quality assurance

QA analysts re-check a sample of cases for accuracy, evidence and policy. An Amazon "AML QA Specialist" listing in Hyderabad also required Swedish, which shows how a language can open a niche (listing seen on 3 October 2026). QA is a natural next step after two or three years of clean case work.

Advisory and consulting

Big Four and consulting firms run financial crime teams that do KYC remediation, programme reviews and investigations for banks. Listings seen on 24 October 2026 included PwC's "FCU/KYC - Senior Associate" (4–8 years, Hyderabad and Bengaluru), PwC's KYC and AML associate role in its Bengaluru FinCrime centre (3–6 years), EY's "Fraud and Financial Crime" senior role in Hyderabad, and Grant Thornton's US shared services "Analyst AML KYC" (2–4 years, Hyderabad).

Regtech and AML technology

If you come from engineering or data, this path combines AML knowledge with tech. Listings seen on 24 October 2026 included a TCS "FircoSoft Developer" role in Hyderabad (sanctions-screening technology), a Kiya.ai NetReveal developer role in Chennai, an Actimize AML business analyst role at NICE in Pune (8–13 years), and a Bank of America "AML OMR Intracycle Performance Monitoring" analytics role in Hyderabad and Mumbai that asked for R, Python, SAS and SQL.

Compliance management

This is the top of the operations ladder: team lead, manager, compliance officer and beyond. Listings seen on 24 October 2026 included Grant Thornton's "Manager AML KYC" (7–10 years, Hyderabad), Hinduja Leyland Finance's "AML Compliance Manager" (12–16 years, Chennai) and Bajaj Financial Securities' "Chief Manager - Compliance, AML & Surveillance" (10–15 years, Pune).

5. The AML career growth ladder: fresher to head of financial crime

Short answer: A common AML ladder runs from KYC analyst to AML or TM analyst, senior analyst or QA, investigator, team lead, manager and finally head of financial crime; the experience ranges below come from real listings we read on 24 October 2026, and your pace depends on skill, employer and role.

Read each step as role → typical experience asked in listings → what changes.

  1. KYC analyst or L1 alert analyst → 0 to about 3 years (Deutsche Bank listed 0–3; Wipro 1–4) → you learn documents, risk ratings, red flags and case notes
  2. AML or transaction monitoring analyst → about 1 to 6 years (most operations roles we read asked 1–6) → you work alert queues and start escalating cases
  3. Senior analyst or QA analyst → about 2 to 8 years (Grant Thornton analyst 2–4; IQ-EQ officer 5–8) → you handle complex files and check others' work
  4. AML investigator or L2/L3 analyst → about 2 to 8 years (Guidehouse 2–6; Tide investigations analyst 2–5) → you decide on escalations and draft STR narratives
  5. Team lead or supervisor → about 5 to 10 years (Citco senior analyst or supervisor 5–10) → you manage people, productivity and quality
  6. AML manager → about 7 to 16 years (Grant Thornton manager 7–10; Hinduja Leyland Finance 12–16) → you own a process, report to senior leaders and face audits
  7. Head of financial crime, MLRO or Principal Officer → usually well over a decade of experience → you own the firm's AML programme and its dealings with the regulator

MLRO means Money Laundering Reporting Officer, a UK-style title for the person who decides on and files suspicious reports. In Indian banks, the closest legal role is the Principal Officer under the RBI's KYC Directions.

Two things speed you up on this ladder:

  • Moving from retail to wholesale or complex work. Corporate KYC, funds, trusts and cross-border cases build judgement faster.
  • Moving sideways at the right time. A year in QA or investigations makes you a much stronger candidate for team lead than five years in one alert queue.

6. AML salary by career stage

Short answer: AML pay in India grows steadily with experience; AmbitionBox shows AML analysts moving from about ₹4.5–4.9 lakh a year at 1–3 years to ₹8.4–9.4 lakh at 6–9 years, and AML managers at about ₹10.9–12.1 lakh (October 2026).

These are AmbitionBox typical ranges shown to logged-out users in October 2026. They are self-reported, many AML analyst salaries come from BPO employers, and some samples are small, so treat them as a guide.

Role (India) Typical range Experience and sample AML KYC Analyst, 1–3 years ₹3.8–4.3 lakh a year 385 salaries AML Analyst, 1–3 years ₹4.5–4.9 lakh a year 1.3k salaries AML Analyst, 3–6 years ₹5.9–6.6 lakh a year 1.6k salaries AML Analyst, 6–9 years ₹8.4–9.4 lakh a year 418 salaries Senior AML Analyst ₹6.2–6.8 lakh a year 2–8 years, 524 salaries Financial Crime Analyst ₹6.3–6.9 lakh a year 1–7 years, 970 salaries AML Compliance Officer ₹7.7–10.6 lakh a year 1–10 years, 60 salaries (small sample) AML Manager ₹10.9–12.1 lakh a year 6–14 years, 40 salaries (small sample)

The AmbitionBox AML Analyst page (updated 22 October 2026) shows an all-India typical range of ₹5.8–6.4 lakh a year for 1–7 years, based on 3.3k salaries, and says average AML analyst pay grew 20% over the last two years. The AmbitionBox AML Manager page (updated 3 October 2026) has only 40 salaries, so the top of the ladder is harder to pin down.

For a fresher, there is no reported AmbitionBox band below one year. The only figure is an AmbitionBox estimate of ₹3.4–3.7 lakh a year for AML KYC analysts with 0–1 year, and it is labelled as an estimate, not reported salaries (October 2026).

City matters too. AmbitionBox showed AML analysts at about ₹4.7–5.2 lakh a year in Hyderabad, ₹5.5–6 lakh in Bengaluru and ₹5.5–6.1 lakh in Mumbai (1–7 years, October 2026). For full tables by title, city and company type, read our AML analyst salary in India guide.

Book a free demo class online or at our Hyderabad centre to see the syllabus and pick the plan that fits your goal.

7. Skills and certifications that move your AML career

Short answer: Employers want AML knowledge, sharp attention to detail, clear case writing and strong Excel; certifications such as IIBF AML/KYC and CAMS help you stand out and grow, but the October 2026 listings we read called them "good to have", not required for entry.

What job descriptions ask for

We read 11 AML and KYC job descriptions on 24 October 2026. The common patterns were:

  • Tasks: KYC, CDD and EDD reviews, alert review (monitoring L1 and L2, sanctions and PEP screening), escalation decisions, written case narratives and STR or SAR support
  • Rules named: FATF, the US Bank Secrecy Act, FATCA, and OFAC, EU and UK sanctions; RBI KYC and AML guidelines in an Indian-bank fresher listing
  • Tools named: World-Check, Actimize, Fircosoft, Mantas and, above all, Excel; SAS, SQL and Python for analytics roles
  • Qualification: mostly "any graduate"; finance or commerce preferred in some
  • Experience: most operations roles asked 1–6 years; true 0–1 year roles were a small minority
  • Targets: State Street's AML senior associate listing asked for minimum 99% quality; Guidehouse listed productivity, quality and SLA targets

As you grow, the mix shifts: entry roles reward red-flag spotting and Excel, mid-level roles reward investigation and STR writing, and senior roles reward leadership, policy, risk assessment and audit handling.

Certifications in one paragraph each

The IIBF Certificate Examination in AML/KYC, run by the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance, is a low-cost Indian option popular with bank staff and graduates who want to show basic AML and KYC knowledge. Check the IIBF website for the current fee before you register.

CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist) from ACAMS is the best-known global AML certification. Eligibility is credit-based: you need an active ACAMS membership and enough credits from education, work experience and AML training, and holders must recertify on a fixed cycle. It is most useful once you have some AML experience. Our CAMS certification guide covers eligibility, cost and a study plan.

Listings that mentioned certifications, such as State Street (ACAMS or ICA "good to have") and Interactive Brokers (ACAMS, CFE or CFCS "a plus"), treated them as an advantage, not a gate (listings seen on 24 October 2026).

8. Pros and cons of an AML career

Short answer: AML gives you a law-backed, steady field with a clear ladder and transferable skills, but early roles can be repetitive, target-driven and shift-based, and starting pay is lower than many people expect.

Pros Cons The work is required by law at banks, NBFCs, payment firms, brokers and insurers, so it is steady Early KYC and L1 work can feel repetitive Open to any graduate; no coding or finance degree needed to start Productivity, quality and SLA targets are common, and a 99% quality bar is not unusual Clear ladder from analyst to investigator, QA, lead and manager Night, rotational or client-aligned shifts appear in many listings Skills move across banks, consulting firms, fintechs and countries Starting pay is modest, about ₹3.8–4.9 lakh a year at 1–3 years (AmbitionBox, October 2026) Meaningful work: you help stop fraud, mule rings and terror financing Many fresher listings are BPO or agency posts, so you must filter carefully Sideways moves into fraud, sanctions, regulatory reporting and analytics Pay jumps need you to move into investigations, wholesale KYC, QA or leadership

A note on shifts

Listings we read on 24 October 2026 named night shifts "if required" (State Street), "rotational shifts or client-aligned schedules" (Guidehouse) and shift allowance with pickup and drop depending on the shift (Interactive Brokers). Many global teams serve the US, Europe or Asia-Pacific, so ask about shift timing in every interview.

Will AI replace AML jobs?

Rule-based monitoring raises many false positive alerts, and banks are adding machine learning to score alerts and find hidden networks. That changes the work, but a human analyst still reviews the evidence and signs off. You can also see AI creating new roles: EY had a "FinCrime AI" senior listing in Hyderabad and Bank of America had an AML performance-monitoring analytics role asking for R, Python, SAS and SQL (listings seen on 24 October 2026). The safest plan is to pair AML judgement with Excel, SQL and a basic understanding of how monitoring models work.

9. Who an AML career suits

Short answer: AML suits people who are patient, detail-focused, curious about how money moves, and comfortable writing clear notes; it suits less well if you want fast-paced selling, constant variety from day one, or high pay in your first year.

It suits you if you Think twice if you Enjoy spotting what does not add up in a document or statement Want a sales or customer-facing role with lots of variety from week one Can focus on careful, rule-based work for long stretches Do not enjoy reading rules, policies and procedures Write simply and clearly in English, and like Excel Are not willing to start on a shift Have strong ethics and keep information confidential Expect a high salary in year one

Graduates from B.Com, BBA, MBA, BA, B.Sc and engineering, and staff from bank branches, BPO banking processes and back offices, all enter AML regularly.

10. Choose your AML career path by profile

Short answer: Match your background to the path where you already have an edge, then take three concrete first steps; the table below gives a starting path and first steps for eight common profiles.

Your situation Best starting path Your first 3 steps Fresh B.Com, BBA or M.Com graduate KYC and CDD Learn KYC rules and the three stages of laundering; build Excel basics; apply to KYC analyst roles and take IIBF AML/KYC Fresh BA, B.Sc or other non-commerce graduate KYC or sanctions screening Learn AML basics and red flags; practise writing short case notes; apply to KYC and screening roles that say "any graduate" MBA (finance) fresher KYC with a move to advisory Learn CDD on companies and beneficial ownership; build a sample corporate KYC file; target Big Four and bank KYC roles Bank branch or operations staff KYC or transaction monitoring Map your branch KYC and cash experience to AML terms; learn alert review; apply internally or to TM analyst roles BPO banking process staff Transaction monitoring or KYC Highlight your quality scores and shift experience; learn red flags and case writing; apply to L1 alert roles in BPO and KPO compliance processes Working KYC analyst (1–3 years) Investigations or QA Volunteer for complex or wholesale files; sharpen STR narrative writing; start CAMS preparation Engineer or data analyst Regtech and AML analytics Learn AML processes and alert logic; strengthen SQL and Python; target AML developer, BA or analytics roles Experienced analyst (5+ years) Team lead, manager or consulting Lead a small team or project; earn CAMS if you have not; target lead, manager or Big Four senior roles

One warning for freshers. On 24 October 2026, most "AML fresher" results on Naukri were BPO and recruitment-agency posts, while bank and Big Four AML roles usually asked for one to three years or more. One Accenture fresher listing was tagged "Anti-Money Laundering (AML)" but its job text described content moderation. Always read the job description, not just the tag. Our guide to AML jobs for freshers shows how to filter these.

11. How to start an AML career in 6 steps

Short answer: Learn the basics, practise real case work, build Excel skills, add a beginner certification, tailor your resume to job-description words, and apply widely across banks, consulting firms and compliance processes.

  1. Learn the foundations: the three stages (placement, layering, integration), the PMLA, FIU-IND reports, RBI KYC rules, FATF basics and red flags.
  2. Practise case work: write five-line case notes from sample statements: who, what happened, why it is unusual, what you checked, what you recommend.
  3. Build Excel skills: filters, pivot tables and lookups; add basic SQL if you can.
  4. Add a beginner certification: IIBF AML/KYC first, CAMS later.
  5. Tailor your resume: use job-description words such as KYC, CDD, EDD, PEP, sanctions screening, alert review and STR.
  6. Apply widely: banks, global banks' centres, Big Four firms, BPO and KPO compliance processes and fintechs, and expect a case scenario in interviews.

Avoid anyone who asks you to pay for a guaranteed placement. Genuine employers do not charge you for a job.

Frequently asked questions

Is AML a good career in India?

Yes, AML is a good career in India for graduates who enjoy careful investigation work. Banks and other reporting entities must check customers, monitor transactions and report suspicious activity under the PMLA, so the work is steady. The field has a clear ladder from KYC analyst to investigator, QA, team lead and manager. Early roles can be repetitive and shift-based, so growth depends on building investigation, writing and data skills.

What is an AML career?

An AML career is any job that helps a bank or financial firm detect, prevent or report money laundering. Roles range from the KYC analyst who checks customer documents, to the transaction monitoring analyst who reviews alerts, to the investigator who writes STR narratives, up to the manager or head of financial crime who runs the programme and answers to the regulator.

What is the career path in AML?

A common AML career path starts as a KYC or L1 alert analyst, then AML or transaction monitoring analyst, then senior analyst or QA, then investigator, team lead, AML manager and finally head of financial crime or Principal Officer. You can also move sideways into sanctions, advisory and consulting, regtech or compliance management depending on your strengths.

What is the scope of AML in India?

The scope of AML in India is wide because the law requires it across banks, NBFCs, payment firms, brokers and insurers, and global banks run KYC and AML operations from Indian cities. On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 16,323 keyword-match results for "aml" across India. These counts include loosely related roles, so the real number of AML roles is smaller.

Is AML KYC a good career in India?

Yes, AML KYC is a sensible starting career in India, especially for commerce and other graduates. KYC is the largest entry door because the RBI requires banks to rate every customer's risk and update KYC every 2, 8 or 10 years depending on risk. From KYC you can grow into monitoring, investigations, QA or consulting, which pay more.

How do I start a career in AML?

Start by learning the three stages of money laundering, the PMLA, FIU-IND reports, RBI KYC rules and common red flags. Then practise writing short case notes from sample statements, build Excel skills, add a beginner certification such as IIBF AML/KYC, tailor your resume with job-description words and apply widely to banks, consulting firms and compliance processes.

Can a fresher get an AML job?

Yes, but true fresher roles are a small share of the market. Most operations roles in the listings we read asked for 1 to 6 years. Deutsche Bank had a 0 to 3 year monitoring role and Wise had an entry-level FinCrime role in Hyderabad. On Naukri, most "AML fresher" results were BPO and agency posts, so read every job description carefully.

What is the salary of an AML analyst in India?

AmbitionBox showed a typical AML analyst range of ₹5.8 to 6.4 lakh a year in India for 1 to 7 years of experience, based on 3.3k salaries, in October 2026. By band, AML analysts reported about ₹4.5 to 4.9 lakh at 1 to 3 years and ₹8.4 to 9.4 lakh at 6 to 9 years. The data is self-reported, so treat it as a guide.

What is the salary of an AML fresher?
