Generative AI Jobs in India 2026 guide by Brolly Academy

Quick answer

Generative AI jobs are roles where you build, test, deploy or apply AI systems that create text, code, images or answers, such as GenAI engineer, Gen AI developer, LLM engineer, data scientist (GenAI), AI architect and AI product manager. On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 10,953 results for "generative ai" across India, led by Bengaluru (4,007) and Hyderabad (2,258). These are keyword matches, not a count of open jobs, but they show steady demand. Most listings want Python, RAG, LLM APIs and a framework such as LangChain, and most experienced roles ask for 3 or more years.

  • Common titles: Generative AI engineer, Gen AI developer, AI/ML engineer, data scientist (GenAI), LLM or agentic AI architect, AI product manager
  • Top cities on Naukri: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Noida
  • Who had listings: IT services firms, Big Four and consulting firms, bank and pharma global capability centres (GCCs), product companies and analytics firms
  • Typical pay: AmbitionBox showed ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh a year for "Generative AI Engineer" in India (632 salaries, October 2026)
  • Work mode: mostly work from office; hybrid is common, fully remote is rare

Key takeaways

  1. Job-portal numbers are keyword matches with duplicates and loosely related roles. Use them to compare cities and skills, not as a vacancy count.
  2. Python, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and LLM APIs appear in almost every GenAI job description we read on 24 October 2026.
  3. Most GenAI listings target experienced engineers; fresher roles exist but are a small slice and often internships.
  4. Fully remote GenAI jobs are rare in India: on Naukri, 456 of 10,953 "generative ai" results were tagged remote.
  5. A GitHub portfolio with a working RAG or agent project, plus a clean resume, does more than any certificate. Only one of 12 JDs we read even mentioned certifications, as "preferred".

1. Generative AI jobs at a glance

Short answer: GenAI jobs fall into a few families: building GenAI apps, building and tuning models, designing systems, and applying GenAI in business roles. Each family asks for different skills and experience.

Use this table as your map. The experience column describes what listings we read on 24 October 2026 asked for, not a rule.

Job family What you do every day Experience listings asked Generative AI engineer / Gen AI developer Build chatbots, RAG search and agents on top of LLM APIs; wire them into apps 0 to 2 years (rare) up to 8 to 10 years AI/ML engineer (GenAI) Train, fine-tune and deploy models; build pipelines on AWS, Azure or GCP Mostly 3 to 9 years Data scientist (GenAI) Apply LLMs and NLP to business data; fine-tune and evaluate models; work with clients 0 to 2 years (rare), often 4 to 9 years LLM / agentic AI architect Design multi-agent systems, choose models and platforms, set guardrails Senior (lead, principal, architect titles) AI product manager Decide what AI features to build, for whom, and how to measure success Experienced product roles Intern / associate Support prototypes, data prep, evaluation and testing 0 to 2 years

Here is the usual career flow on the build side:

  1. Entry: GenAI intern, associate ML engineer, AI and Python developer (fresher)
  2. Core: Gen AI developer or GenAI engineer building RAG and chatbot features
  3. Senior: senior AI engineer, owning agents, evaluation and deployment
  4. Lead: lead GenAI developer or lead software engineer (GenAI), guiding a team
  5. Top: principal AI engineer, LLM architect, head of GenAI technology

If you want the full picture of the engineer role, our guide on how to become a generative AI engineer covers daily work, skills and a step-by-step path.

2. Generative AI job market snapshot: counts by city (24 October 2026)

Short answer: On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 10,953 results for "generative ai" in India, with Bengaluru at 4,007 and Hyderabad at 2,258; these are keyword-match counts that change daily and include duplicates and loosely related roles.

We searched Naukri for "generative ai" while logged out on 24 October 2026 and noted the "1 - 20 of N" figure for each search. Treat these as a demand signal. A listing for a generic "software engineer" that lists GenAI as one skill still counts.

Search on Naukri (24 Oct 2026) Results shown "generative ai", all India 10,953 "generative ai", Bengaluru 4,007 "generative ai", Hyderabad 2,258 "generative ai", Pune 1,596 "generative ai", Chennai 1,138 "generative ai", Mumbai 873 "generative ai", Gurgaon 781 "generative ai", Noida 545

Skill and role searches on the same day help you see which skills employers name:

Search on Naukri (24 Oct 2026) Results shown "rag" 7,585 "langchain" 4,323 "gen ai developer" 1,861 "generative ai", 0 years' experience filter 284

What this tells you:

  • Bengaluru and Hyderabad lead. Together they account for a large share of "generative ai" results, with Pune and Chennai next.
  • RAG is a mainstream skill. RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) means the app first searches your own documents, then gives the relevant parts to the model so its answer is grounded in your data. It returned more matches than "gen ai developer" by a wide margin.
  • Most demand is for experienced people. The 0-years filter returned only 284 results, and many were internships or mis-tagged senior roles.

Naukri's filters on the all-India page also showed who posts these listings. By company type, "Foreign MNC" led with 4,910 results, followed by Corporate (1,272), Indian MNC (1,244) and Startup (453). Most listings (9,648) were posted by companies directly, with 1,305 from consultants.

On LinkedIn, "Generative AI" in India showed "11,000+" results on 24 October 2026. Its city figures were almost as large as the India figure, so fuzzy matching inflates them and we do not compare cities there. We also skip Naukri searches such as "llm engineer" or "prompt engineer", because Naukri broad-matched the word "engineer".

3. Generative AI jobs in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and other cities

Short answer: Hyderabad is India's number two city for GenAI listings on Naukri, with a heavy GCC and IT-services mix; Bengaluru leads on volume and has the widest spread of product companies and banks.

Generative AI jobs in Hyderabad

On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 2,258 results for "generative ai" in Hyderabad. The page filters showed:

  • Work mode: 1,800 work from office, 432 hybrid and only 26 remote
  • Company type: 1,234 foreign MNC, 295 Indian MNC, 224 corporate, 57 startup
  • Industry: 1,652 IT services and consulting, 100 pharmaceutical and life sciences, 75 software product, 66 financial services

That pharma number is worth noticing. Pharma and healthcare capability centres such as Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Regeneron, MSD and Optum India had senior AI listings in Hyderabad in October 2026, alongside banks such as Wells Fargo (see section 5). If you come from a life sciences or healthcare data background, Hyderabad gives you a domain edge.

Generative AI jobs in Bangalore

Bengaluru showed about 4,007 Naukri results on the same day, the highest of any city. LinkedIn's Bengaluru page showed IT services, global banks, enterprise software, consumer and analytics firms side by side.

Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi NCR

Pune (1,596) had some GenAI intern and fresher listings, such as Crisil's intern role. Chennai (1,138) often appears in multi-city listings with Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Mumbai (873), Gurgaon (781) and Noida (545) follow. Because many listings name two or three cities at once, city counts add up to more than the India total.

4. Generative AI job titles and what each one does

Short answer: The same work hides behind many titles: GenAI engineer, Gen AI developer, AI engineer, LLM engineer and applied AI engineer all build LLM-based apps, while data scientist, architect and AgentOps titles add modelling, design or operations depth.

Below are titles that appeared in listings on 24 October 2026, with what the work looks like. A few terms first:

  • LLM (large language model): a model trained on huge amounts of text to predict the next word piece (token), which lets it write, summarise and answer questions.
  • Prompt: the instruction and context you give the model.
  • Embedding: a list of numbers that captures the meaning of a piece of text, so similar text gets similar numbers.
  • Vector database: a database that stores embeddings and finds the closest matches fast; used in RAG.
  • Fine-tuning: further training a model on your own examples. LoRA is a cheaper method that trains small add-on weights instead of the whole model.
  • Agent: an LLM app that plans steps and calls tools, such as search, a database or an API, to finish a task.
  • Hallucination: a confident answer that is wrong or made up.
Title seen in listings What the work involves Example listing (seen 24 Oct 2026) Generative AI Engineer / Developer Python apps using LLM APIs, RAG, prompt design, vector search, evaluation TCS "Generative AI Engineer / Developer", Bengaluru Gen AI Senior Software Engineer Software engineering plus GenAI features in products Wipro "Gen AI - Sr Software Engineer", Bengaluru Python LLM Engineer Agentic workflows, RAG with citations, evaluation and monitoring JPMorganChase "Software Engineer III - Python LLM Engineer" Senior AI Engineer (GenAI and agentic AI) Agents with LangChain and LangGraph, retrieval pipelines, cloud deployment Capgemini, Hyderabad/Bengaluru/Mumbai Data Scientist (Generative AI) LLM and NLP solutions, fine-tuning, client work PwC, Tiger Analytics, TVS Credit AI Developer (Microsoft stack) Agents on Azure OpenAI, Microsoft Foundry (formerly Azure AI Foundry), Azure AI Search Tech Mahindra, Hyderabad Co-pilot Developer Building Copilot-style assistants for business teams EY "Senior Co-pilot Developer", Hyderabad LLM Architect / Agentic AI Architect Design LLM systems and multi-agent setups at scale Accenture "Large Language Model Architect"; PepsiCo "Workplace-Agentic AI Architect" AgentOps engineer Run, monitor and improve agents in production Pearson "Senior Software Engineer – AgentOps", Bengaluru Principal AI / Agentic Engineer Senior technical leadership on AI platforms Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Hyderabad AI Product Manager Owns AI product direction and success measures Chevron "AI Product Manager", Bengaluru

Titles are not standard across companies. A "Data Scientist - GenAI" at one firm may do the same daily work as a "Generative AI Engineer" at another. Read the responsibilities, not just the title. To see how GenAI work differs from older AI roles, our comparison of agentic AI vs generative AI explains why "agentic" now shows up in so many titles.

5. Who hires: companies with GenAI listings (seen 24 October 2026)

Short answer: On 24 October 2026 we saw GenAI and AI listings from IT services firms, Big Four and consulting firms, bank and pharma capability centres, enterprise software companies and analytics firms; these are listings seen on that date, not hiring commitments.

Every company below had at least one listing we saw on Naukri or LinkedIn on 24 October 2026. A listing on one day does not mean a company is hiring at volume, and recruiter listings may hide the real employer.

Employer type Companies with listings seen on 24 Oct 2026 Typical titles IT services TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Coforge, Persistent Systems, EPAM Systems, UST GenAI engineer, Sr AI/ML engineer, lead GenAI developer Consulting and Big Four Accenture, EY, PwC, Capco LLM architect, Co-pilot developer, data scientist (GenAI) Banks and financial services Wells Fargo, JPMorganChase, Nasdaq, TVS Credit Lead software engineer (GenAI), Python LLM engineer Pharma and healthcare GCCs Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Regeneron, MSD, Optum India, Bayer Principal AI engineer, Sr AI engineer, AI developer Product and enterprise software Microsoft (AI roles), Adobe, SAP, NetApp Applied scientist, conversation AI engineer, ML engineer (agentic) Consumer and industrial PepsiCo, Albertsons Companies India, Chevron, Celanese Agentic AI architect, AI engineering manager, AI product manager Analytics and digital engineering Tiger Analytics, Grid Dynamics, Polestar Analytics Senior data scientist (GenAI), GenAI engineer

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Accenture's numbers look huge, but read carefully. Naukri's company filter showed Accenture at 2,184 results on the all-India page. Many are generic titles such as "Custom Software Engineer" that list GenAI as a skill, so this is not a count of GenAI roles.
  • Microsoft's listing was an AI research role. The listing we saw was "Principal Applied Scientist", and we did not read its JD, so treat it as an AI role, not a GenAI developer opening.

6. Skills and tools GenAI job descriptions ask for

Short answer: Across 12 job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026, every one asked for Python and LLM skills, 11 asked for RAG, 8 named LangChain, and many wanted vector databases, evaluation, agents and one major cloud.

We read 12 JDs in full from TCS, Infosys, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, PwC, Tiger Analytics, Coforge, Wells Fargo, JPMorganChase, TVS Credit, Crisil and a recruiter listing for a client. They range from internships to 8 to 10 years. Here is what they asked for, most common first.

Skill or tool How often in 12 JDs What it looks like in the JD Python All 12 "Mandatory Python"; backend and API work LLMs and LLM APIs All 12 OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Hugging Face APIs RAG 11 of 12 Ingestion, chunking, retrieval, reranking, citations LangChain 8 of 12 Building chains and agents LangGraph 5 of 12 Multi-step and multi-agent workflows Vector databases Many FAISS, Pinecone, Chroma, pgvector, Azure AI Search Prompt engineering Many Prompt design, context management Evaluation and observability 5 named it strongly (TCS, JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Tech Mahindra, Capgemini) Groundedness and hallucination checks, test sets, traces, cost Agent frameworks Several LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel, Microsoft Agent Framework Cloud Several AWS SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock (Infosys); Azure OpenAI and Microsoft Foundry (Tech Mahindra); any of AWS, Azure or GCP (Capgemini, PwC, Wells Fargo) SQL 3 (Capgemini, TVS Credit, Jobaaj client) Data pipelines, PostgreSQL, MySQL Git and CI/CD 4 (TCS, PwC, TVS Credit, Wells Fargo) Version control, testing, deployment pipelines

Newer asks in 2026 JDs:

  • MCP and A2A (PwC, Tech Mahindra): protocols for connecting agents to tools and for agents to talk to other agents.
  • Guardrails and AI security (Wells Fargo): prompt-injection defences, red teaming, OWASP LLM Top 10 and NIST AI RMF were listed as desired.
  • Fine-tuning with LoRA and PEFT (Tiger Analytics), and quantization (PwC).
  • AI coding assistants: JPMorganChase's JD mentioned using enterprise-approved AI coding assistants.

What is rarely asked: FastAPI appeared once (TVS Credit), and Docker or Kubernetes appeared mainly as "desired" (Wells Fargo) or through AWS container services (Infosys). Strong Python, RAG and evaluation skills matter more than a long tool list.

7. Experience: what GenAI listings really ask for

Short answer: Experienced GenAI roles in the JDs we read asked for anywhere from 3 to 8 years up to 8 to 10 years, and the experience range on a job card sometimes understates what the full JD asks.

From the 12 JDs we read on 24 October 2026:

Listing Experience asked Crisil, Generative AI Intern (Pune) 0 to 2 years Recruiter listing for a client, GenAI Engineer (Pune/Gurugram/Bengaluru) 0 to 2 years, internships and projects count TVS Credit, Data Scientist - GenAI (Bengaluru) 0 to 2 years on the card; strong portfolios from fresh candidates "may also be considered" Capgemini, Senior AI Engineer 3 to 8 years PwC, Data Scientist - GenAI 4+ years Wells Fargo, Lead Software Engineer (GenAI) 5+ years, or equivalent from work, training or education Tech Mahindra, AI Developer Card 6 to 10 years; JD says 5+ Infosys, Sr AI/ML Engineer 5 to 9 years Tiger Analytics, Senior Data Scientist (GenAI) Card 4 to 9 years; JD asks 6+ years in data science Coforge, GenAI Engineer Card 3 to 8 years; JD says 6 to 15 years TCS, GenAI Engineer / Developer 8 to 10 years

Two lessons. First, read the full JD: Coforge and Tiger Analytics both showed lower ranges on the card than in the JD text. Second, related experience counts. These JDs ask for years of Python, backend, data science or ML work, so a developer, tester or analyst with 3 or more years starts with an asset, not a reset.

Degree asks were broad. Naukri showed "Any Graduate" for Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, PwC, Tiger Analytics and Crisil. Infosys asked for B.Tech/B.E. (PG options included MCA). TVS Credit and the recruiter listing wanted degrees in CS, data science, AI, statistics or related fields.

8. Work modes: office, hybrid and remote generative AI jobs

Short answer: Most GenAI jobs in India are work from office; hybrid is the second option, and remote GenAI jobs were only about 4% of Naukri's "generative ai" results on 24 October 2026.

Naukri's work-mode filter on the all-India "generative ai" page on 24 October 2026 showed:

Work mode Results Share of 10,953 Work from office 9,170 About 84% Hybrid 1,327 About 12% Remote 456 About 4%

In Hyderabad, only 26 of 2,258 results were tagged remote. Hybrid roles in the JDs we read included Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Tiger Analytics and PwC (PwC said 2 days a week in office).

If you want remote work, filter by "Remote" and still read the JD, because tags can be wrong. Expect remote roles to want proof that you can work alone: shipped projects, clear write-ups and a public GitHub. Be careful with "work from home AI jobs" that ask for fees; pay-per-task AI-training gigs are real work but not engineering roles.

9. Non-coding generative AI roles (as seen in listings)

Short answer: Most GenAI listings are engineering roles, but we also saw AI product manager, AI search optimisation (AEO/GEO) intern, AI video creator intern and model-risk validation roles; "prompt engineer" pay on AmbitionBox mostly reflects AI-training and annotation work.

If you are a marketer, business analyst, content writer or domain expert, here is what non-coding or low-code GenAI work looked like in listings on 24 October 2026:

Role seen What it involves Listing seen AI Product Manager Decide which AI features to build, define success, work with engineers Chevron, Bengaluru (LinkedIn) AI Search Optimization (AEO/GEO) Intern Make content show up in AI answers and AI search Nxtwave, Hyderabad, ₹25,000 a month (Naukri) AI Filmmaker and Micro-Drama Creator Intern Create short videos with AI tools Prowess Publishing, Hyderabad, ₹10,000 a month (Naukri) GenAI model validation (risk) Review and challenge GenAI models in a bank's model-risk team HDFC Bank "Unit Head - Generative AI Validation" (a senior role mis-tagged as 0 to 1 years) Prompt engineer / AI trainer Write and rate prompts and answers to train models Employers on AmbitionBox's prompt-engineer page include AI-training and data firms

About "prompt engineer": AmbitionBox showed a typical range of ₹6 to 6.6 lakh a year for "Prompt Engineer" in India (351 salaries, October 2026). The employers listed there include AI-training and data-annotation firms, which suggests many of these salaries are for training and rating work, not for building LLM apps. We did not see "prompt engineer" as a distinct fresher job category on Naukri. Prompt skills matter in every GenAI role, but on their own they rarely make a full job title.

For non-coders, the practical route is to add GenAI to the job you already do, such as AI content workflows for a marketer or AI feature requirements for a BA, then move toward AI product roles.

10. Generative AI jobs salary snapshot

Short answer: AmbitionBox showed ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh a year for "Generative AI Engineer" and ₹7.3 to 8.1 lakh for "Gen AI Developer" in India in October 2026; these are typical ranges across all experience levels, not offers.

The figures below are the typical ranges AmbitionBox shows to logged-out users, read on 24 October 2026, with the number of salaries behind each. Our full generative AI jobs salary guide covers city, company and role detail.

Role (AmbitionBox, Oct 2026) Typical range per year Salaries in sample Generative AI Engineer, India ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh (0 to 13 years) 632 Generative AI Engineer, Hyderabad ₹7.6 to 10 lakh 108 Gen AI Developer, India ₹7.3 to 8.1 lakh (0 to 7 years) 291 AI Engineer, India ₹15 to 16.6 lakh (1 to 6 years) 5.2k Machine Learning Engineer, India ₹12.6 to 13.9 lakh (1 to 6 years) 9.8k Data Scientist, India ₹15.2 to 16.8 lakh (1 to 8 years) 61.7k Prompt Engineer, India ₹6 to 6.6 lakh (mostly AI-training work) 351

How to read this:

  • Titles and samples differ. "Generative AI Engineer" and "Gen AI Developer" are newer titles, and their samples are dominated by IT-services employees with fewer years. The "AI Engineer" page includes product companies. So do not conclude that GenAI engineers earn less than AI engineers.
  • Pay rises with scope. AmbitionBox did not show an experience-band table to logged-out users, so we do not give pay by years. Pay moves up as you go from building features to owning agents, evaluation and production systems, then to lead and architect roles. Card salaries for experienced roles on 24 October 2026 included "13-23 Lacs PA" (Coforge) and "8-18 Lacs PA" (Infosys).

11. Generative AI jobs for freshers

Short answer: Fresher GenAI roles exist, but they are a small slice: a Naukri search for "generative ai" filtered to 0 years returned 284 results on 24 October 2026, many of them internships and some clearly senior roles mis-tagged.

Genuine entry listings we read included a Crisil Generative AI Intern role in Pune, a TVS Credit Data Scientist (GenAI) role in Bengaluru for 0 to 2 years, and a recruiter listing for a GenAI engineer at 0 to 2 years with "4-8 Lacs PA" on the card, where internships and projects counted as experience. On LinkedIn, "Generative AI Intern" showed 152 results in India on the same day. Stipends on GenAI internships seen on Naukri in October 2026 ranged from unpaid to ₹25,000 a month.

Freshers should aim for titles such as Generative AI Intern, AI/ML Intern, AI Engineer Intern, Associate Machine Learning Engineer and AI and Python Developer (fresher). Our full guide to generative AI jobs for freshers covers eligibility, a 90-day plan and fresher projects, and our list of generative AI projects for beginners gives you ideas to start.

12. How to get a generative AI job: a step-by-step plan

Short answer: Pick one target role, build two or three proof projects on GitHub, tailor your resume to JD keywords, search with filters on Naukri and LinkedIn, ask for referrals, and prepare for RAG and LLM interview questions.

Step 1: Pick your target role

Choose based on where you start:

  • Python or Java developer: Gen AI developer or GenAI engineer
  • Data analyst or data scientist: data scientist (GenAI)
  • Tester or QA engineer: GenAI roles that stress evaluation and testing (JDs at TCS, JPMorganChase and Tech Mahindra ask for AI testing, evaluation and hallucination checks)
  • Marketer, BA or product person: AI product, AI content or AEO/GEO roles
  • Fresher (B.Tech, BCA, B.Sc, MCA): GenAI intern or associate roles

Step 2: Build proof, not just certificates

Recruiters want to see working projects. Build two or three of these and put them on GitHub with a clear README, a short demo video and a note on what you would improve:

  1. A RAG assistant that answers questions from a set of PDFs, with source citations
  2. An agent that uses one or two tools, such as a search or a database lookup
  3. An evaluation script that scores answers on a fixed test set and flags hallucinations

Step 3: Make your resume match the JD

Use the exact words JDs use: Python, RAG, LangChain, vector database, prompt engineering, evaluation, the cloud you know. Lead each project with the result. Our generative AI resume guide shows sample resumes and bullet points.

Step 4: Search smartly

Where to search How to use it Naukri Search "generative ai", "rag" or "langchain"; filter by city, experience and work mode; check "Company Jobs" vs "Consultant Jobs" LinkedIn Jobs Search titles like "Generative AI Engineer" or "LLM Engineer"; set job alerts; follow target companies Company career pages Check GCC and IT-services career pages directly to read full JDs and apply at the source Tech job boards Hirist, Instahyre and foundit rank for GenAI searches in India Startups Follow founders and AI startup communities; some hire through posts and referrals

Step 5: Use referrals

A referral gets your resume read. Message people in the team you want, mention one of your projects and ask one clear question. College alumni are the easiest start.

Step 6: Prepare for interviews

Expect questions on transformers, prompting, RAG design, embeddings, fine-tuning, evaluation and a system-design round on a chatbot or search app. Practise with our generative AI interview questions.

13. How to read a GenAI job listing (and spot red flags)

Short answer: Read the full JD, not the card: check the real experience ask, the actual employer, the tech stack and whether the role builds GenAI or only mentions it.

Use this checklist on every listing:

  1. Experience: does the JD text match the card?
  2. Employer: is it the company or a recruiter? Recruiter cards may say "Leading Client" or "Top MNC".
  3. Real GenAI work: does it describe building RAG, agents or evaluation, or is GenAI one keyword in a generic role?
  4. Tag errors: a "0 years" tag on a "Unit Head" or "Lead" title is a mistake.
  5. Notice period: some want immediate joiners only (Coforge said "Immediate to 20 days").
  6. Pay: unpaid internships exist (Naukri showed 56 "Unpaid" among the 284 zero-experience results), but never pay a fee to get a job.

14. Do you need a certification for a generative AI job?

Short answer: No. Only one of the 12 JDs we read (PwC) mentioned "AI/GenAI certifications preferred", and none required one; a certification helps most when it matches the cloud an employer uses.

Certifications still help you learn a platform in a structured way. Current options include:

  • AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01): foundational, 65 questions, $100 (AWS, October 2026), from the official AWS page
  • AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional (AIP-C01): 75 questions, $300, for people with GenAI build experience (AWS, October 2026)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (exam AI-103): for engineers who build agents with Python and Microsoft Foundry, per Microsoft Learn (October 2026). The older AI-102 certification is retired.
  • Google Cloud Generative AI Leader: a non-technical credential, 90 minutes, $99 (Google Cloud, October 2026), useful for managers and business roles

Match the certification to your target employers' stack: Tech Mahindra's JD was Azure-heavy, Infosys's was AWS-heavy. A project on that cloud plus the matching certificate is a strong pair.

15. Is generative AI a good career in 2026?

Short answer: Yes for people willing to build real skills: the World Economic Forum lists AI and big data as the fastest-growing skills, and Naukri showed thousands of GenAI-related listings in October 2026, though most target experienced engineers.

The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 (January 2025), based on 1,000+ employers, expects jobs equal to 14% of today's employment (170 million) to be created by 2030 and 8% (92 million) to be displaced, a net gain of 78 million. It names AI and big data as the fastest-growing skills and AI and machine learning specialists among the fastest-growing jobs. It also expects, on average, 39% of workers' existing skills to be transformed or outdated over 2025 to 2030.

For you, this means two things. GenAI skills now appear inside many developer, data and testing listings, which widens your options. And the bar is rising: 2026 JDs ask for agents, evaluation and guardrails, and "agentic" appeared in titles at Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Wells Fargo, Eli Lilly and PepsiCo in October 2026.

Generative AI jobs include Generative AI engineer, Gen AI developer, AI/ML engineer, data scientist (GenAI), Python LLM engineer, LLM or agentic AI architect, AgentOps engineer and AI product manager. Listings on 24 October 2026 also showed GenAI interns, Co-pilot developers and AI search optimisation interns. Most of these roles build apps on top of large language models using Python, RAG and frameworks such as LangChain, while product and content roles apply GenAI to business work.

Are there many generative AI jobs in India?

Yes, demand is steady. On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 10,953 results for "generative ai" across India, and LinkedIn showed 11,000+ results. These are keyword-match counts with duplicates and loosely related roles, so they are not a count of open GenAI jobs. They are useful for comparing cities and skills, and they show that GenAI skills now appear in many developer, data and testing listings.

Which city has the most generative AI jobs in India?

Bengaluru leads. On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 4,007 results for "generative ai" in Bengaluru, followed by Hyderabad at 2,258, Pune at 1,596 and Chennai at 1,138. Mumbai, Gurgaon and Noida followed. Many listings name several cities at once, such as Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru, so city counts overlap and add up to more than the India total.

How many generative AI jobs are there in Hyderabad?

On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 2,258 results for "generative ai" in Hyderabad, the second highest of any city. Of these, 1,800 were work from office, 432 hybrid and only 26 remote. IT services and consulting made up 1,652 results, with pharma and life sciences at 100. Treat the figure as a keyword-match count, not a number of open vacancies.

Which companies are hiring for generative AI jobs in India?

On 24 October 2026 we saw GenAI and AI listings from TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Accenture, EY, PwC, Wells Fargo, JPMorganChase, Tiger Analytics, Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, PepsiCo, Adobe and SAP, among others. These are listings seen on that date, not hiring commitments. Many recruiter listings also posted roles for unnamed clients, so always confirm the real employer.

What skills are required for generative AI jobs?

Python and LLM skills appeared in all 12 JDs we read on 24 October 2026, and RAG appeared in 11. LangChain was named in 8 and LangGraph in 5. Many asked for vector databases such as FAISS, Pinecone or Chroma, prompt engineering, evaluation and hallucination checks, agent frameworks and one cloud among AWS, Azure and GCP. SQL, Git and CI/CD also appeared in several JDs.

What is the salary for generative AI jobs in India?

AmbitionBox showed a typical range of ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh a year for "Generative AI Engineer" in India, based on 632 salaries, and ₹7.3 to 8.1 lakh for "Gen AI Developer", based on 291 salaries, in October 2026. These ranges cover all experience levels. Pay rises as you move from building features to owning agents, evaluation and production systems, and then to lead and architect roles.

Are there remote generative AI jobs in India?

Remote GenAI jobs exist but are rare. On 24 October 2026, Naukri's filter showed 456 remote results out of 10,953 for "generative ai", about 4%, while 9,170 were work from office and 1,327 hybrid. In Hyderabad only 26 of 2,258 were remote. Remote employers usually want a strong public portfolio and proof that you can work independently.

Are there generative AI jobs for non-coders?

Yes, a few. On 24 October 2026 we saw an AI Product Manager listing at Chevron, an AI search optimisation intern role at Nxtwave and an AI video creator internship at Prowess Publishing. Prompt engineer salaries on AmbitionBox mostly reflect AI-training and annotation work. The most practical route for non-coders is to add GenAI to the job you already do, then move toward AI product roles.

Is prompt engineer a real job in India?

It exists, but mostly in a different form than people expect. AmbitionBox showed ₹6 to 6.6 lakh a year for Prompt Engineer in India, based on 351 salaries in October 2026, and its listed employers include AI-training and data-annotation firms. We did not see prompt engineer as a distinct fresher category on Naukri. Prompt skills matter in every GenAI role but rarely make a full engineering job title.

What are entry-level generative AI jobs?

Entry-level GenAI jobs include Generative AI Intern, AI/ML Intern, AI Engineer Intern, Associate Machine Learning Engineer and AI and Python Developer for freshers. A Naukri search for "generative ai" with a 0 years filter returned 284 results on 24 October 2026, many of them internships and some senior roles mis-tagged. LinkedIn showed 152 results for "Generative AI Intern" in India the same day.

Can a fresher get a generative AI job?

Yes, but it takes proof. Listings we read, such as a TVS Credit data scientist role and a recruiter listing for a GenAI engineer, accepted 0 to 2 years and said internships, projects and strong portfolios count. Build two or three GitHub projects, such as a RAG assistant and a simple agent, and target intern and associate titles. Stipends seen in October 2026 ranged from unpaid to ₹25,000 a month.

How much experience do generative AI jobs ask for?

Experienced GenAI roles we read asked for 3 to 8 years at Capgemini, 4+ years at PwC, 5+ at Wells Fargo and Tech Mahindra, 5 to 9 at Infosys, 6+ at Tiger Analytics and Coforge, and 8 to 10 at TCS. Job cards sometimes show lower ranges than the full JD, as with Coforge and Tiger Analytics, so always read the full description before applying.

Do I need a certification to get a generative AI job?

No. Only one of 12 JDs we read on 24 October 2026, from PwC, said GenAI certifications were preferred, and none required one. A certification helps most when it matches the employer's cloud, such as AWS Certified AI Practitioner for AWS-heavy roles or Microsoft's AI-103 associate exam for Azure roles. Projects that show real skills matter more to recruiters.

Which certification is best for generative AI jobs?

Pick the one that matches your target employer's cloud. AWS Certified AI Practitioner costs $100 for 65 questions, and the AWS Generative AI Developer Professional costs $300 for 75 questions. Microsoft's current associate is Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate, exam AI-103, since AI-102 is retired. Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader costs $99 and suits managers and business roles.

Which job portals are best for generative AI jobs?

Naukri and LinkedIn carry the most GenAI listings in India, and tech boards such as Hirist, Instahyre and foundit also rank for GenAI searches. On Naukri, search "generative ai", "rag" or "langchain" and filter by city, experience and work mode. On LinkedIn, set alerts for titles like Generative AI Engineer. Also check GCC and IT-services career pages directly and ask for referrals.

How do I get a job in generative AI?

Pick one target role, build two or three GitHub projects such as a RAG assistant, an agent and an evaluation script, and tailor your resume to JD keywords like Python, RAG, LangChain and vector databases. Search Naukri and LinkedIn with filters, ask alumni and contacts for referrals, and prepare for interview questions on transformers, prompting, RAG design, fine-tuning and evaluation.

Can a software tester move into generative AI jobs?

Yes, testing skills fit GenAI well. JDs from TCS, JPMorganChase and Tech Mahindra ask for evaluation, AI testing, hallucination checks and observability. A tester who learns Python, builds a RAG app and writes an evaluation script that scores answers against a test set has a strong story. Target GenAI developer roles that stress evaluation and quality, and highlight your testing background.

What is the difference between agentic AI jobs and generative AI jobs?

Generative AI jobs focus on apps that create content or answers with LLMs, such as chatbots and RAG search. Agentic AI jobs focus on agents that plan steps and call tools to finish tasks. In practice they overlap: many 2026 listings, at Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Wells Fargo and PepsiCo, combine both words, and agent frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI and AutoGen appear in GenAI JDs.

Do generative AI jobs need a B.Tech degree?

Not always. On Naukri, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, PwC, Tiger Analytics and Crisil listings showed "Any Graduate", while Infosys asked for B.Tech or B.E., with MCA among postgraduate options. Some fresher roles wanted degrees in computer science, data science, AI or statistics. Wells Fargo accepted equivalent experience from work, training or education. Skills and projects often matter as much as the degree.

Which industries hire for generative AI in Hyderabad?

On Naukri on 24 October 2026, IT services and consulting led Hyderabad's "generative ai" results with 1,652, followed by pharmaceutical and life sciences with 100, software product with 75 and financial services with 66. Pharma and healthcare capability centres such as Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly, Regeneron and MSD had senior AI listings in Hyderabad, and banks such as Wells Fargo did too.

Is generative AI a good career option in 2026?

Yes, for people willing to build real skills. The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 names AI and big data as the fastest-growing skills and AI and machine learning specialists among the fastest-growing jobs. It expects 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced by 2030. GenAI skills now appear in many developer, data and testing listings in India, but the bar keeps rising toward agents and evaluation.

Will generative AI create more jobs than it replaces?

The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects jobs equal to 14% of today's employment, about 170 million, to be created by 2030, and 8%, about 92 million, to be displaced, a net gain of 78 million. It also expects 39% of workers' existing skills to change over 2025 to 2030. So new roles will appear, but people must keep updating their skills to move into them.

What do generative AI job descriptions usually ask for?

A typical GenAI JD asks for strong Python, hands-on LLM and RAG work, one framework such as LangChain or LlamaIndex, vector databases, prompt engineering, evaluation and one cloud. Senior roles add agents, guardrails, CI/CD and production monitoring. Newer 2026 JDs mention MCP and A2A protocols, AI security and use of AI coding assistants. Degree asks are often "Any Graduate".
