Quick answer
A generative AI engineer is a software engineer who builds products on top of large language models (LLMs): chatbots, document Q&A systems, AI agents and content tools that are grounded in company data, tested, secured and running in production. To become a generative AI engineer, you learn Python, learn how LLMs and prompts work, build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) apps with a framework such as LangChain and a vector database, add evaluation and deployment on one cloud, and prove it with 2 to 3 portfolio projects. In the 12 Indian job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026, every one asked for Python and LLM experience, and 11 asked for RAG.
- What you build: RAG chatbots, document assistants, AI agents that call tools, and the tests around them
- Core skills: Python, LLM APIs, prompt engineering, RAG, vector databases, LangChain or LlamaIndex, evaluation, one cloud
- Typical pay: AmbitionBox showed ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh a year for "Generative AI Engineer" in India, across 0 to 13 years and 632 salaries (October 2026)
- Who hires: IT services firms, consulting firms and global capability centres (GCCs) of banks and pharma companies, mostly in Bengaluru and Hyderabad
- Timeline: a Python developer can move in about 4 to 6 months of steady practice; freshers usually start as interns or associates
Key takeaways
- The role is mostly software engineering around LLMs, not training models from scratch.
- RAG appeared in 11 of the 12 job descriptions we read. One excellent RAG project with evaluation covers what most listings ask for.
- Most listings we read asked for 3 to 10 years, so freshers should target intern, associate and "0 to 2 years" titles.
- Certifications are a bonus, not a gate. Only 1 of the 12 job descriptions mentioned them, as "preferred".
- Generative AI engineer, Gen AI developer, AI engineer and LLM engineer often describe the same work, so read the job description, not the title.
1. Generative AI engineer at a glance
Short answer: Here is the whole role on one screen: the work, the skills, the employers, the pay and the entry route.
2. What is a generative AI engineer?
Short answer: A generative AI engineer turns a foundation model into a reliable product: they connect the model to data and tools, control its output, measure its quality and keep it safe and affordable in production.
A data scientist asks "what does the data tell us?". An ML engineer asks "how do we train and serve this model?". A generative AI engineer asks "how do we make an existing model answer our users correctly, every time, at a cost we can afford?".
Some people online say the title is just "a backend developer calling an API". That is half true. The API call is one line of code. The real work starts after it: the model makes up facts, ignores instructions, leaks data and runs up a large bill. The generative AI engineer fixes all of that, which is why job descriptions ask for evaluation, guardrails and monitoring, not just prompts.
Terms you will see in every job description, in plain English:
- LLM (large language model): a model trained on huge amounts of text to predict the next word piece; GPT, Gemini, Claude, Llama and Mistral are LLM families
- Foundation model: a large model trained on broad data that can be adapted to many tasks
- Token and prompt: a token is a small chunk of text the model reads and writes (usage is billed per token); a prompt is the instructions and context you send
- Context window: the maximum number of tokens the model can consider at once
- Embedding and vector database: an embedding is a list of numbers that captures meaning; a vector database stores embeddings and finds the closest matches (FAISS, Chroma, Pinecone, pgvector)
- RAG (retrieval-augmented generation): retrieve relevant passages from your own documents, then ask the model to answer using only those passages
- Fine-tuning, LoRA and RLHF: fine-tuning trains a model further on your examples; LoRA does it cheaply by training small extra weights; RLHF uses human ratings to make answers more helpful
- Hallucination: a confident answer that is false
- Agent: an LLM-driven program that plans steps and calls tools to finish a task
- Multimodal: a model that handles more than one type of input or output, such as text and images
3. What a generative AI engineer does day to day
Short answer: Most days mix coding, testing answers, reading logs and talking to the business team; very little time goes into training models from scratch.
Here is a typical day for a mid-level generative AI engineer at a bank's GCC in Hyderabad. The person and project are fictional, but every task comes from the job descriptions we read.
- 9:30, stand-up: users reported that the internal policy assistant quoted an outdated circular.
- 10:00, debug retrieval: old PDFs are still in the vector index. You fix the ingestion pipeline so superseded documents are removed.
- 11:30, improve the prompt: the model must now cite the circular number and say "I don't know" when the context has no answer.
- 13:30, run evaluation: you run the offline test set and check groundedness (is the answer supported by the retrieved text?) and the hallucination rate against last week.
- 15:00, guardrails: you block prompt-injection attempts and mask account numbers before any text reaches the model.
- 16:00, cost review: token usage jumped, so you route simple questions to a smaller model and cache repeated ones.
- 17:00, demo: you show the compliance team the new citations feature.
The pattern is build, measure, fix, repeat. If you enjoy debugging and seeing people use what you made, this role suits you.
4. Generative AI engineer roles and responsibilities
Short answer: Across 12 Indian job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026, the same eight responsibilities kept coming up, led by building RAG pipelines, integrating LLM APIs and evaluating answers.
We read JDs from Capgemini, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, PwC, Tiger Analytics, Coforge, Wells Fargo, TCS, JPMorganChase, TVS Credit, Crisil and a Jobaaj.com client (listings seen on 24 October 2026). They ask you to:
- Build GenAI applications such as chatbots, search assistants and summarisers with LLM APIs and Python (all 12).
- Design RAG pipelines: chunk documents, create embeddings, index, retrieve, rerank and cite sources (11 of 12).
- Write and version prompts so changes can be tracked and rolled back (JPMorganChase, Wells Fargo, TCS).
- Build agents and multi-agent workflows with LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, Semantic Kernel or the Microsoft Agent Framework (Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, PwC, Wells Fargo, JPMorganChase).
- Evaluate and monitor quality: test sets, regression checks, groundedness and hallucination checks, traces and cost (TCS, JPMorganChase, Wells Fargo, Tech Mahindra, Capgemini).
- Fine-tune when needed with LoRA and PEFT (Tiger Analytics) or fine-tuning and quantization (PwC, Infosys).
- Deploy and operate on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud with LLMOps, APIs, CI/CD and Git (Infosys, Capgemini, PwC, Wells Fargo, TCS).
- Apply Responsible AI and security: guardrails, prompt-injection defences, AI red teaming, the OWASP LLM Top 10 and NIST AI RMF (Wells Fargo, Tech Mahindra, PwC).
Two newer asks stood out. PwC and Tech Mahindra named MCP and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocols, which let agents connect to tools and to each other. JPMorganChase expected engineers to use its approved AI coding assistants.
Titles vary for the same work. JPMorganChase called its listing "Software Engineer III - Python LLM Engineer", while Grid Dynamics, Capco and Polestar Analytics used "Generative AI Engineer" (listings seen on 24 October 2026). Senior roles add architecture, code review and client conversations (Tiger Analytics names client engagement); junior roles build and test parts of a pipeline under guidance.
5. Generative AI engineer vs ML engineer vs data scientist vs prompt engineer
Short answer: A generative AI engineer builds applications on existing models; an ML engineer trains and serves models; a data scientist finds insights and builds predictive models; and a "prompt engineer" title in India often means AI training or annotation work.
Companies use these titles loosely. Pay is the AmbitionBox typical range shown to logged-out users in October 2026.
Read the pay column with care. The GenAI titles are new and their samples are dominated by IT services employees with fewer years, while the AI engineer and data scientist pages include product companies such as Google. So the numbers do not prove that generative AI engineers earn less; the samples differ. On the prompt engineer page, the employers with the most salaries were AI-training and annotation firms, so many of those salaries are for data labelling contracts, not LLM application work. The "LLM Engineer" page had only 26 salaries, too few to rely on.
Which role fits you? Like building software that users touch: generative AI engineer. Love statistics and business questions: data scientist. Enjoy training models and infrastructure: ML engineer.
6. Generative AI engineer skills
Short answer: Python, LLMs, RAG and vector databases are the core; frameworks, cloud, evaluation and soft skills separate a strong candidate from an average one.
The last column counts mentions across the 12 job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026: a small sample, so read it as a signal.
Classic ML libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn) appear in JDs from Infosys, Jobaaj's client and Crisil, so basic ML knowledge helps. FastAPI appeared in only one JD (TVS Credit) and Docker or Kubernetes in two (Wells Fargo as "desired", Infosys through AWS ECS and EKS): useful, but not the first thing to learn.
Do you need maths? Enough to understand embeddings, similarity scores and evaluation numbers. You do not need to derive transformer equations to build RAG apps and agents. More maths helps if you move toward fine-tuning or research.
7. The generative AI engineer tech stack
Short answer: Think of the stack in six layers, from the model at the bottom to monitoring at the top; you need one good tool per layer, not every tool.
Google moved Vertex AI into Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on 22 April 2026, and Microsoft now calls Azure AI Foundry "Microsoft Foundry". Older tutorials and JDs still use the old names, so recognise both.
Here is the core pattern behind most RAG apps, as a prompt template (simplified example):
SYSTEM: You are a policy assistant for branch staff.
Answer ONLY from the context below.
If the context does not contain the answer, reply: "I don't know."
Always cite the document ID and section.
CONTEXT:
{top_5_retrieved_chunks}
QUESTION:
{user_question}
The engineering is everything around this template: choosing the chunks, checking the answer really comes from them, and catching cases where it does not.
8. How to become a generative AI engineer: 6 steps
Short answer: Learn Python, understand LLMs and prompting, build RAG, add agents, learn evaluation and deployment on one cloud, then package it all in a portfolio and apply to the right titles.
This is the summary path. For a detailed month-by-month learning plan with resources, follow our generative AI roadmap.
- Get solid at Python and APIs. Functions, classes, REST APIs, JSON, Git and basic SQL. Outcome: you can build a small web tool on your own.
- Learn how LLMs and prompts work. Tokens, context windows, temperature, system prompts, few-shot examples and structured output. Call two model APIs and compare answers. Outcome: you can explain why a model hallucinates and how to reduce it.
- Build RAG end to end. Chunk PDFs, create embeddings, store them in FAISS or Chroma, retrieve, rerank and answer with citations using LangChain or LlamaIndex. Outcome: a document Q&A app that says "I don't know" when it should.
- Add agents and tool use. Let the model call a database or search tool, and try LangGraph for multi-step flows with a human approval step. Outcome: an agent that completes a task.
- Learn evaluation, security and deployment. Build a test set, measure groundedness, add guardrails, track token cost and deploy on one cloud (Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry or Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform). Outcome: an app you could defend in a design review.
- Build a portfolio and apply. Publish 2 to 3 projects on GitHub with a README, a demo video and evaluation results, then apply to titles that match your level.
How long does it take? A working Python developer who practises 10 to 12 hours a week can usually cover steps 2 to 6 in about 4 to 6 months. A fresher new to Python should plan for longer. These are our planning estimates, not guarantees.
9. Paths into the role by background
Short answer: Your starting point decides what you learn first: freshers build fundamentals and projects, developers add LLM skills, analysts add engineering, and testers move through AI evaluation.
Fresher (B.Tech, BCA, B.Sc, MCA)
A Naukri search for "generative ai" filtered to 0 years' experience returned 284 results on 24 October 2026, many of them internships and some clearly senior roles mis-tagged (Naukri, October 2026). Genuine entry listings exist: Jobaaj.com, hiring for a client, posted a 0 to 2 years "Generative AI Engineer" role where internships and projects count; TVS Credit said strong portfolios from fresh candidates may be considered; and Crisil listed a "Generative AI Intern" in Pune (listings seen on 24 October 2026). Build one strong RAG project and one agent project, and put them above coursework on your generative AI resume.
Python, Java or .NET developer
You are closest to the role, so focus on LLM concepts, RAG and evaluation. Tech Mahindra's JD accepted Python and/or .NET (C#) with Semantic Kernel and the Microsoft Agent Framework, a direct bridge for .NET developers. Rebuild one feature of your current product as a GenAI prototype; an internal move is often faster than a job change.
Data analyst or data scientist
Your gap is software engineering: modular code, APIs, Git and deployment. PwC and Tiger Analytics posted "Data Scientist - Generative AI" roles that blend both worlds (listings seen on 24 October 2026), a natural bridge title.
Software tester
Evaluation needs people who design test cases, find failure modes and track regressions, which testers already do. Learn Python, then build evaluation suites with question and answer test sets, hallucination checks and prompt-injection tests. Wells Fargo listed AI red teaming and prompt-injection defences as desired skills, and Tech Mahindra named AI testing and evaluation (listings seen on 24 October 2026).
10. Portfolio projects that prove you can do the job
Short answer: Build three projects that match what JDs ask: a RAG assistant with citations, an agent with tools and approvals, and an evaluation and guardrails harness.
These are fictional project ideas we wrote for this guide, each with deliverables a recruiter can check in five minutes. For simpler warm-ups, see our generative AI projects for beginners.
Project 1: "PolicyMitra", a RAG assistant for HR policies
Staff at a Bengaluru IT company ask about leave, travel and insurance policies and get answers with the exact policy section.
- Build: chunk and embed 20 to 30 public sample policy PDFs, store them in Chroma or FAISS, and answer with citations using LangChain or LlamaIndex
- Must handle: "I don't know" for out-of-scope questions, and updated policies replacing old ones
- Deliverables: GitHub repo with README and architecture diagram, a 2-minute demo video, and a 50-question test set with your groundedness scores
Project 2: "ExpenseAgent", an agent with tools and human approval
An assistant reads a receipt image, extracts the amount and category, checks the expense policy and drafts a claim for a manager to approve.
- Build: a multimodal model reads the receipt, an agent calls a policy lookup tool and a database, and a human approves before anything is saved
- Must handle: blurry receipts, amounts above limits and duplicate claims
- Deliverables: repo, a flow diagram of each agent step, traces of 10 sample runs, and a note on what the agent may not do
Project 3: "EvalGuard", an evaluation and guardrails harness
A bank's GCC wants to test any chatbot before release.
- Build: a test runner that scores answers for groundedness, flags hallucinations, runs prompt-injection attacks and masks phone and account numbers
- Must handle: comparing two prompt versions, with cost per 100 questions
- Deliverables: repo, a comparison report, and a one-page summary for a non-technical manager
Together these prove you can ground a model in data, let it act safely, and measure its quality.
11. Certifications that help a generative AI engineer
Short answer: Certifications can support your profile, but no JD we read required one; pick at most one technical certification that matches your target cloud or platform.
Only PwC's job description mentioned "relevant AI/GenAI certifications", as preferred (listing seen on 24 October 2026). If you want one, these current options fit the role:
The Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate covers design, data preparation, application development (30%), deployment, governance, and evaluation and monitoring (Databricks, October 2026), close to this role. The AWS Generative AI Developer Professional targets people with 2+ years building production apps and 1+ year of hands-on GenAI (AWS, October 2026), so it is not a fresher exam. Microsoft's Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate (exam AI-103) is for engineers who build agents with Python and Microsoft Foundry (Microsoft Learn, October 2026). The older AI-102 certification is retired, so skip it.
Foundational options include AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01, 65 questions, $100); Google Cloud's Professional Machine Learning Engineer ($200, 2 hours) suits people with ML experience. Compare them all in our generative AI certification guide.
12. Generative AI engineer interview preparation
Short answer: Expect four rounds: Python coding, LLM and RAG concepts, a system design question for a GenAI app, and a deep dive into your own projects.
- Coding: Python data structures, JSON handling, calling an API, writing a small chunking function; sometimes SQL.
- Concepts: transformers and attention at a high level, tokens, embeddings, RAG versus fine-tuning, LoRA, RLHF and why models hallucinate.
- System design: for example, "design a chatbot over internal documents for all employees", covering ingestion, retrieval, prompt, guardrails, evaluation, cost and monitoring.
- Project deep dive: why you chose your chunk size, how you measured quality, what failed and what you would change.
For a full question bank by topic, use our generative AI interview questions guide.
13. Generative AI engineer salary snapshot
Short answer: AmbitionBox showed a typical range of ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh a year for "Generative AI Engineer" in India in October 2026, with Hyderabad at ₹7.6 to 10 lakh; pay rises with experience and production skills.
These are typical ranges AmbitionBox showed logged-out users, updated 23 October 2026; they are not offers.
AmbitionBox showed no reliable pay-by-experience table for these titles, so we will not invent one. In words: entry roles and IT services projects sit toward the lower end, while senior engineers at product companies and bank GCCs who own production systems earn well above these ranges. Naukri cards on 24 October 2026 show the spread: Jobaaj.com's client offered "4-8 Lacs PA" for 0 to 2 years, while Coforge showed "13-23 Lacs PA" for a JD asking 6 to 15 years. Shipped RAG or agent systems with evaluation and cloud deployment raise pay most. For city, company and role detail, read our generative AI salary guide.
14. Where generative AI engineer jobs are in India
Short answer: Demand is concentrated in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, followed by Pune and Chennai, and it comes mostly from IT services firms, consulting firms and global capability centres.
On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 10,953 results for "generative ai" across India, 1,861 for "gen ai developer", 7,585 for "rag" and 4,323 for "langchain". By city, "generative ai" showed about 4,007 results in Bengaluru, 2,258 in Hyderabad, 1,596 in Pune and 1,138 in Chennai. These keyword-match counts include duplicates and loosely related roles, so treat them as a demand signal, not open jobs.
Companies with GenAI engineering listings seen on 24 October 2026 include TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Coforge, EPAM Systems, PwC and EY; banks such as Wells Fargo and JPMorganChase; and pharma GCCs in Hyderabad such as Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly and Regeneron. A listing is not a hiring commitment.
Experienced listings asked for 3 to 10 years: Capgemini 3 to 8, PwC 4+, Wells Fargo and Tech Mahindra 5+, Infosys 5 to 9, Tiger Analytics 6+ and TCS 8 to 10. Cards can understate this: Coforge's card said 3 to 8 years while its JD said 6 to 15. Degree asks are flexible. Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, PwC, Tiger Analytics and Crisil showed "Any Graduate" on Naukri, Infosys asked for B.Tech or B.E., TVS Credit and the Jobaaj.com client role asked for CS, data science, AI or related degrees, and Wells Fargo accepted equivalent experience or training. For the full market by city, title and work mode, see our generative AI jobs guide.
15. Is generative AI engineering a good career in 2026?
Short answer: Yes, for people who enjoy building software and keep learning; demand is real and growing, but most openings want experience, and the tools change every few months.
The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 (January 2025) found that AI and big data lead the fastest-growing skills, and lists AI and machine learning specialists and software developers among the fastest-growing jobs. It also expects on average 39% of workers' existing skill sets to be transformed or outdated between 2025 and 2030.
The honest downsides:
- Fast change: frameworks, model names and even cloud product names changed during 2026, so you must keep learning.
- Experience bias: most listings want 3+ years, so freshers need strong projects.
- Title confusion: some "GenAI" listings are general software jobs with GenAI added as a keyword.
- Accountability: when an AI system gives a customer a wrong answer, its engineer is asked why.
For developers, analysts and testers already in IT, the move is very achievable. Freshers can make it too, usually through an intern or associate step first.

Frequently asked questions
What is a generative AI engineer?
A generative AI engineer is a software engineer who builds products on top of large language models and other generative models. They connect models to company data and tools, write and test prompts, build RAG pipelines and agents, measure answer quality and keep the system secure and affordable in production. Most of the work is engineering around an existing model rather than training a new model from scratch.
What does a generative AI engineer do day to day?
A generative AI engineer spends most days coding, testing and fixing LLM applications. Typical tasks include debugging retrieval when a chatbot gives a wrong answer, improving prompts, running an evaluation test set to check groundedness and hallucinations, adding guardrails against prompt injection, reviewing token costs and demoing new features to business users. Very little time goes into training models from scratch.
How do I become a generative AI engineer?
You become a generative AI engineer in six steps. Get strong at Python and APIs, learn how LLMs and prompts work, build a RAG app end to end, add agents and tool use, learn evaluation, security and deployment on one cloud, and then publish two to three portfolio projects and apply to titles that match your experience level.
How long does it take to become a generative AI engineer?
A working Python developer who practises 10 to 12 hours a week can usually cover the core skills in about four to six months. A fresher who is new to Python should plan for longer and aim first for intern or associate roles. These are planning estimates, and your pace depends on prior coding experience and how many real projects you build.
What skills does a generative AI engineer need?
A generative AI engineer needs Python, LLM fundamentals, prompt engineering, RAG, embeddings and vector databases such as FAISS, Chroma or Pinecone, and a framework such as LangChain or LlamaIndex. Strong candidates add agent frameworks, evaluation and monitoring, one cloud platform, SQL, Git and the ability to explain AI limits clearly to business users.
What are the roles and responsibilities of a generative AI engineer?
The main responsibilities are building GenAI applications with LLM APIs, designing RAG pipelines, writing and versioning prompts, building agents with tools, evaluating and monitoring answer quality, fine-tuning models when needed, deploying on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, and applying Responsible AI and security practices such as guardrails and prompt-injection defences. Senior roles also own architecture and client conversations.
Is coding required to become a generative AI engineer?
Yes, coding is required for the generative AI engineer role. Every one of the 12 job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026 asked for Python. You can use generative AI tools without coding, but building, testing and deploying LLM applications means writing Python, calling APIs and using Git every day.
Do I need strong maths to become a generative AI engineer?
You need only working maths for most generative AI engineer roles. You should understand what embeddings and similarity scores mean and be able to read evaluation numbers. You do not need to derive transformer equations to build RAG apps and agents. More maths becomes useful if you move toward fine-tuning or research work.
Can a fresher become a generative AI engineer in India?
Yes, but most freshers start through an intern or associate role. A Naukri search for generative AI filtered to 0 years returned 284 results on 24 October 2026, many of them internships and some mis-tagged senior roles. Genuine entry listings existed, including a 0 to 2 years role where internships and projects counted, so strong projects make the difference.
Can a Java or .NET developer become a generative AI engineer?
Yes, a Java or .NET developer is well placed to become a generative AI engineer because you already write production code. Focus on LLM concepts, RAG and evaluation, and add Python. Tech Mahindra's job description accepted Python or .NET with C#, using Semantic Kernel and the Microsoft Agent Framework, which shows the Microsoft stack offers a direct bridge.
Can a software tester move into generative AI engineering?
Yes, testers have a strong route in because evaluation is a core part of the role. Learn Python, then build evaluation suites with question and answer test sets, hallucination checks and prompt-injection tests. Wells Fargo listed AI red teaming and prompt-injection defences as desired skills, and Tech Mahindra named AI testing and evaluation in its listing.
What is the difference between a generative AI engineer and an ML engineer?
A generative AI engineer builds applications on top of existing models, such as RAG chatbots and agents, and focuses on prompts, retrieval, evaluation and deployment. A machine learning engineer trains, tunes, deploys and monitors models, often classic ML models, using tools like scikit-learn, PyTorch and MLOps platforms. The two roles share Python, cloud and deployment skills.
What is the difference between a generative AI engineer and an AI engineer?
AI engineer is a broader title that covers classic machine learning systems as well as generative AI work, while a generative AI engineer focuses on LLM applications. In practice companies use the titles loosely. AmbitionBox showed ₹15 to 16.6 lakh for AI engineer and ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh for generative AI engineer, but the samples differ in employers and experience.
Generative AI engineer vs data scientist: which is better?
Neither is better; they suit different people. Choose generative AI engineer if you like building software that users touch, such as chatbots and agents. Choose data scientist if you enjoy statistics, analysis and business questions. Some employers, such as PwC and Tiger Analytics, posted data scientist roles focused on generative AI, which blend both paths.
Is a prompt engineer the same as a generative AI engineer?
No, a prompt engineer is not the same as a generative AI engineer. Prompting is one skill inside the engineer role, which also covers RAG, agents, evaluation and deployment. In India, the prompt engineer salary data on AmbitionBox was dominated by AI-training and annotation firms, so many prompt engineer roles are data labelling contracts rather than LLM application engineering.
What is an LLM engineer?
An LLM engineer is another title for an engineer who builds applications on large language models, and the work largely matches the generative AI engineer role. JPMorganChase, for example, posted a Python LLM Engineer role covering agentic workflows, RAG and evaluation. AmbitionBox had only 26 salaries for the LLM Engineer title in October 2026, too few to rely on.
What is the salary of a generative AI engineer in India?
AmbitionBox showed a typical range of ₹9.2 to 10.1 lakh a year for generative AI engineer in India, based on 632 salaries across 0 to 13 years, updated in October 2026. Hyderabad showed ₹7.6 to 10 lakh from 108 salaries, and Gen AI developer showed ₹7.3 to 8.1 lakh. Senior engineers who own production systems earn well above these ranges.
Which certification is best for a generative AI engineer?
The best certification depends on your platform. Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate maps closely to the role, AWS Certified Generative AI Developer Professional suits experienced AWS developers, and Microsoft's Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate fits Azure users. No job description we read required a certification; only PwC listed one as preferred.
Is the Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate certification worth it?
It is worth it if you work on Databricks or data platforms. The exam has 45 scored questions in 90 minutes, costs $200 and is valid for 2 years, and it covers design, data preparation, application development, deployment, governance, and evaluation and monitoring. Treat it as a bonus on top of projects, because employers rarely require certifications.
Is the Microsoft AI-102 certification still useful for generative AI engineers?
No, Microsoft has retired the Azure AI Engineer Associate certification and its AI-102 exam, so do not prepare for it. The current Microsoft associate for this work is the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate, exam AI-103, aimed at engineers who build agents and AI solutions with Python and Microsoft Foundry.
What projects should a generative AI engineer build for a portfolio?
Build three projects that match what job descriptions ask for. First, a RAG assistant with citations and an "I don't know" rule. Second, an agent that uses tools and asks a human for approval. Third, an evaluation and guardrails harness that scores answers, flags hallucinations and runs prompt-injection tests. Publish each with a README, demo video and test results.
Which companies hire generative AI engineers in India?
Companies with GenAI engineering listings seen on 24 October 2026 included TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, Coforge, EPAM Systems, PwC and EY, banks such as Wells Fargo and JPMorganChase, and pharma GCCs in Hyderabad such as Bristol Myers Squibb, Eli Lilly and Regeneron. Listings change daily and are not hiring commitments.
Is generative AI engineer a good career in 2026?
Yes, it is a good career for people who enjoy building software and keep learning. The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 found AI and big data lead the fastest-growing skills. The downsides are fast-changing tools, most listings asking for 3 or more years of experience, and confusing job titles, so freshers need strong projects to stand out.
Can I become a generative AI engineer without a CS degree?
Yes, many listings accept any graduate. Capgemini, Tech Mahindra, PwC and Tiger Analytics showed "Any Graduate" on Naukri, and Wells Fargo accepted equivalent experience or training. Some roles, such as TVS Credit and the Jobaaj.com client role, asked for CS, data science or related degrees, so a strong portfolio matters most if your degree is in another field.
