Quick answer
Choose CAPM if you are a student, a fresher or a career switcher with no project leadership experience, and choose PMP if you have already led projects for at least three years (with a bachelor's degree). Both come from PMI (Project Management Institute). CAPM proves you know the fundamentals of project management. PMP proves you can lead projects in the real world, which is why employers value it more. Many people do CAPM first, build experience, and then move to PMP.
- CAPM: no experience needed, 23 hours of project management education, 150 questions in 180 minutes
- PMP: 2 to 5 years of experience leading projects (depending on education), 35 hours of training, 180 questions in 240 minutes
- Cost: the PMP exam fee shown to India visitors is ₹27,406 for PMI members and ₹55,488 for non-members (PMI, October 2026)
- Validity: both run on a three-year cycle; PMP needs 60 PDUs and CAPM needs 15 PDUs to renew
- The link: an active CAPM counts as your 35 hours of training when you later apply for PMP
Key takeaways
- CAPM is the entry-level PMI certification. PMP is the experienced-professional certification. They are steps on the same ladder, not rivals.
- PMP eligibility changed in 2026. PMI now asks for years of experience leading projects within the last 10 years, not the older 36 or 60 month rule.
- The PMP exam was updated in July 2026. Business Environment now carries 26% of the exam, up from 8%.
- A CAPM that is still active waives the 35-hour training requirement for PMP, which makes CAPM a smart first step for freshers.
- If you already qualify for PMP, skip CAPM. Go straight to PMP, because it is the credential hiring managers ask for.
1. PMP vs CAPM: what is the difference?
Short answer: CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI's entry-level certification for people with little or no project experience. PMP (Project Management Professional) is PMI's flagship certification for people who already lead projects.
Both certifications are issued by PMI (Project Management Institute), the global professional body behind the PMBOK Guide. Because they come from the same organisation, they share the same language, the same ideas and the same way of testing. The difference is the level.
Think of it like this:
- CAPM tests what you know. It checks that you understand project management terms, life cycles, planning methods, agile basics and business analysis basics.
- PMP tests what you can do. It gives you workplace scenarios and asks what a project leader should do next. You need real experience to answer them well.
That is why the entry rules are so different. Anyone with a school-leaving certificate who is 18 or older can sit for CAPM after 23 hours of study. PMP asks for years of experience leading projects, 35 hours of training, and possibly an audit of everything you claim.
2. PMP vs CAPM side by side
Short answer: CAPM is shorter, cheaper to qualify for and open to freshers. PMP is longer, has strict experience rules, and carries far more weight with employers.
Here is the comparison in one place. Every figure comes from PMI's own pages, checked in October 2026.
CAPM details are from PMI's CAPM certification page (October 2026). PMP exam details are from the PMP Examination Content Outline, July 2026, and the PMP fees are as shown to an India visitor on PMI's PMP certification page (October 2026).
3. What is CAPM?
Short answer: CAPM is PMI's starter certification. It proves you understand the basics of project management, agile working and business analysis, and it needs no work experience.
CAPM is meant for people at the start of their project career. In India that usually means:
- Final-year students and recent graduates who want a project role
- Freshers in IT services who work in a delivery team
- Career switchers moving into project coordination from sales, operations, teaching or support
- Team members, coordinators and PMO analysts who support a project manager
CAPM eligibility
According to PMI's CAPM certification page (October 2026), you need all three of these:
- A secondary degree (a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent)
- To be at least 18 years old
- At least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam
There is no work experience requirement. That is the single biggest reason freshers choose CAPM.
What the CAPM exam covers
The CAPM exam has four content areas (PMI, October 2026):
Notice that business analysis carries more than a quarter of the marks. CAPM is a good fit if you are not sure yet whether you want to be a project manager or a business analyst, because it touches both.
4. What is PMP?
Short answer: PMP is PMI's best-known certification for experienced project leaders. It tests whether you can lead people, run the process and connect the project to business value, across predictive, agile and hybrid ways of working.
PMI calls PMP the world's most widely held project certification, with more than 1.7 million PMP holders (PMI PMP certification page, October 2026). In India, it is common in job descriptions for project manager, delivery manager and programme manager roles in IT services, global capability centres, construction and banking.
The July 2026 PMP update
PMI updated the PMP exam in July 2026. According to PMI's new exam page and the July 2026 content outline, the main changes are:
- The exam adds AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement in project-based scenarios
- The focus moves towards outcomes, value and business impact
- Domain weights changed: People went from 42% to 33%, Process from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment from 8% to 26%
- Eligibility now counts experience within a 10-year window, and PMI says it has expanded eligibility to apprenticeships and training
PMI also says that if you are already studying older materials, you can keep going, because the core principles of the exam remain the same.
What the PMP exam covers
About 40% of PMP questions represent predictive approaches. The other 60% are split between agile and hybrid approaches (PMI content outline, July 2026). So PMP is no longer a "waterfall only" exam. You need to be comfortable with both styles.
5. Eligibility: PMP vs CAPM
Short answer: CAPM needs no experience. PMP needs between two and five years of experience leading projects within the last 10 years, depending on your education, plus 35 hours of training.
This is where most people decide. Let us put both sets of rules next to each other.
PMP eligibility in 2026
PMI's July 2026 content outline asks for experience "leading projects", with no double-counting of overlapping projects, within the 10 years before you apply. You need one of these:
You also need at least 35 hours of training aligned to the exam content. Books and practice exams alone do not count. An active CAPM gives you the 35-hour credit instead (PMI content outline, July 2026).
The older PMP rule asked for 36 or 60 months of experience depending on your degree. That rule has been replaced. Use the table above.
A new rule for live training from 1 December 2026
PMI's PMP page (October 2026) says that from 1 December 2026, live classes, in person or online, count towards the 35 hours only if they are delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP), a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited higher-education programme. Self-paced online courses from any organisation still count. Training you complete before 1 December 2026 stays eligible under the current rules.
This makes CAPM even more interesting. If you already hold an active CAPM, you do not need to worry about which 35-hour course counts, because the CAPM itself covers that requirement.
CAPM eligibility recap
- Secondary degree
- Age 18 or above
- 23 hours of project management education before the exam
- No experience
What does "leading projects" mean for Indian roles?
PMI's word is "leading". Simply being on a project team is not the same thing. Here is how to think about some common Indian job roles:
- Software developer: if you have only written code, you are probably not yet leading projects. If you have led a module, planned sprints or coordinated a small team, that work may count.
- Test lead: planning testing, managing testers and reporting to stakeholders is usually leadership work.
- Business analyst: running requirement workshops and managing scope with stakeholders can be part of leading a project, but describe it honestly.
- Site engineer: running a site, managing contractors and tracking schedule and cost is classic project leadership.
If you are unsure, you are probably not ready for PMP yet. That is exactly when CAPM makes sense. For a complete walk through the rules, read our PMP certification eligibility guide.
The audit
PMP applications can be audited. According to the PMI Certification Handbook (revised June 2026), all applications are subject to audit and a percentage are selected at random. If you are chosen, PMI asks for copies of your degree, signatures from supervisors for the experience you listed, and certificates for your training hours. You get 90 days to send them. Failing the audit means a one-year suspension before you can reapply. So write your experience truthfully from day one.
6. Exam pattern: PMP vs CAPM
Short answer: CAPM has 150 questions in 180 minutes and tests knowledge of fundamentals. PMP has 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two breaks, and tests judgement through scenarios.
PMP question types
The July 2026 content outline lists these PMP question types:
- Case or scenario questions (new)
- Graphic-based questions (new)
- Multiple choice with one answer
- Multiple response (choose more than one)
- Enhanced matching, hotspot (point and click), matching and pull-down list, at test centres only
The first break comes after the case-study section. The second comes about halfway through the independent questions. Once you start a break, you cannot go back to the section before it (PMI content outline, July 2026).
Retakes
You can take CAPM up to three times in one year (PMI CAPM page, October 2026). For PMP, you get up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period. If you fail three times, you must wait one year from your last exam before you can apply for PMP again. You can apply for other PMI certifications during that year (PMI content outline, July 2026).
PMI does not state the re-exam fee in its handbook, so check the current amount on PMI's site before you book a second attempt.
7. Cost in India: PMP vs CAPM
Short answer: The PMP exam fee shown to India visitors is ₹27,406 for PMI members and ₹55,488 for non-members (PMI, October 2026). PMI's CAPM page did not show a fee when we checked, so confirm the CAPM price on PMI's site before you budget.
PMP exam fee
PMI's PMP certification page localises prices, and from India it showed:
The page also says you pay the exam fee only after your application is accepted and you are ready to schedule.
CAPM exam fee
When we checked PMI's CAPM certification page in October 2026, no price was displayed. We will not guess a number. What we can say is that, like PMP, PMI prices may vary based on your membership status and region (PMI Certification Handbook, June 2026), so log in to PMI's site from India to see your exact CAPM fee.
Should you buy PMI membership first?
Membership rates apply only if you become a member before you pay the exam fee (PMI Certification Handbook, June 2026). For PMP, the member price is ₹28,082 lower than the full price. To decide, compare that saving with the current membership fee shown on PMI's site. If the membership costs less than the saving, joining first makes sense. Members also get free digital PMI standards, including the PMBOK Guide.
Use the same maths for CAPM once you see both CAPM prices on PMI's site.
Other costs to plan for
- Training: CAPM needs 23 hours of project management education, and PMP needs 35 hours (or an active CAPM). Prices vary widely between providers.
- Rescheduling: if you reschedule or cancel within 30 days of your exam appointment, PMI charges US$70 plus taxes, about ₹6,633 (PMI Certification Handbook, June 2026). Within 48 hours of the exam, you lose the whole fee. A no-show also loses the whole fee.
- Renewal: PMP renewal is US$60 for members and US$150 for non-members, about ₹5,685 and ₹14,213, according to PMI's CCR Handbook. That handbook carries a 2022 date, so check the current amount before you pay.
All rupee conversions use about ₹94.75 per US dollar, the Wise mid-market rate on 22 October 2026. They are estimates, and your card or bank rate will differ.
For a full PMP budget including training, renewal and ways to save, read our guide to PMP certification cost.
8. Validity and renewal: PMP vs CAPM
Short answer: Both certifications run on a three-year cycle. PMP needs 60 PDUs per cycle and CAPM needs 15 PDUs per cycle.
PDU means Professional Development Unit. You earn PDUs through learning and through giving back to the profession.
PMP renewal
According to PMI's CCR Handbook, to renew PMP you need 60 PDUs every three years:
- At least 35 PDUs from education, with at least 8 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen
- At most 25 PDUs from giving back to the profession
- Up to 20 PDUs earned in the last 12 months of a cycle can carry over to the next cycle
If you miss the requirements, your PMP goes into suspended status for one year, and you cannot use the PMP title during that time. Keep your PDU records for at least 18 months after the cycle ends, because PMI runs random audits.
CAPM renewal
The same CCR Handbook lists 15 PDUs per three-year cycle for CAPM. That is a quarter of the PMP requirement, which fits its entry-level role. PMI's CAPM renewal fee was not confirmed on an official page when we checked, so look it up before your cycle ends.
9. Which is harder, PMP or CAPM?
Short answer: PMP is harder. It is longer, it uses scenario-based questions that test judgement, and it assumes years of real project leadership. CAPM tests whether you understand the concepts.
The differences are clear from PMI's own exam pages and content outlines:
- Length: PMP is 240 minutes and 180 questions. CAPM is 180 minutes and 150 questions.
- Question style: PMP adds case or scenario questions and graphic-based questions. Many PMP questions have more than one reasonable answer, and you must pick the best action for a project leader.
- Breadth: PMP now gives 26% of its weight to Business Environment, including governance, compliance and value. These topics are much easier if you have worked with real stakeholders and sponsors.
- Experience: CAPM can be passed with careful study. PMP rewards people who can connect the questions to projects they have actually run.
10. Career value and salary: PMP vs CAPM
Short answer: PMP carries much more weight with Indian employers and is linked with higher pay. CAPM helps you get noticed for entry-level project roles but does not replace experience.
PMP and salary
PMI says PMP holders report 17% higher median salaries than people without the certification, across the 21 countries in its Salary Survey (PMI PMP certification page, October 2026). PMI does not publish India-specific figures on its public pages, so treat the 17% as a global picture, not an India promise.
Pay in India depends far more on your experience, city, industry and employer than on any single certificate, so treat PMP as one part of your profile.
What CAPM does for your career
We could not find a reliable public figure for CAPM salaries in India, so we will not invent one. In practical terms, CAPM:
- Shows recruiters you have learned PMI's project language and methods
- Helps you stand out for roles such as project coordinator, PMO analyst, associate project manager and junior scrum or delivery roles
- Gives you a clear path to PMP later
- Covers business analysis basics, which helps if you are also looking at BA roles
What CAPM does not do is make you a project manager on day one. Employers still want to see experience. Use CAPM to get into project work, then build the experience that leads to PMP.
11. Who should choose CAPM and who should choose PMP?
Short answer: If you do not yet meet the PMP experience rule, choose CAPM. If you do, choose PMP and skip CAPM.
Use this simple guide.
A few honest notes:
- Do not take CAPM "just to be safe" if you already qualify for PMP. It costs time and money, and recruiters will look at your PMP status, not your CAPM.
- Do not stretch your experience to qualify for PMP. The audit asks for supervisor signatures. A failed audit means a one-year wait.
- Consider your direction. If you are leaning towards agile roles, you can also look at a Scrum Master certification alongside CAPM.
If you are also weighing PRINCE2, the short version is that PRINCE2 is run by PeopleCert, and PRINCE2 Foundation has no prerequisites and a 60-question, 60-minute exam (PeopleCert, October 2026). Our PMP vs PRINCE2 guide compares them properly.
12. The CAPM to PMP path
Short answer: Earn CAPM early, get a role where you lead parts of projects, keep CAPM active with 15 PDUs, and apply for PMP once you meet the experience rule. Your active CAPM covers the 35-hour training requirement.
This route suits Indian freshers who want a long project management career. Here is how it works in practice.
Step by step
- Prepare for CAPM. Complete at least 23 hours of project management education and study the four CAPM domains.
- Pass CAPM. Take it at a Pearson VUE test centre or online.
- Get into project work. Look for coordinator, PMO, associate PM, team lead or scrum roles. Ask to lead small pieces of work: a module, a release, a vendor, a site.
- Log your experience as you go. Note each project, your role, dates, and what you led. This makes your PMP application and any audit much easier.
- Keep CAPM active. Earn 15 PDUs in each three-year cycle so that your CAPM still counts for PMP training.
- Apply for PMP when you qualify. With a bachelor's degree, that means 36 months of experience leading projects within the last 10 years.
- Use your one-year window. After your application is approved and paid (or after the audit, if selected), you have one year to take the exam.
Example timeline for a graduate
This is an example only. Your timeline depends on when you start leading work, not just when you start working. For the full PMP process from application to exam day, see how to get PMP certification.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?
CAPM is PMI's entry-level certification and PMP is its certification for experienced project leaders. CAPM needs no work experience, only a secondary degree, age 18 or above and 23 hours of project management education. PMP needs two to five years of experience leading projects within the last 10 years, plus 35 hours of training. CAPM tests your knowledge of fundamentals, while PMP tests your judgement through workplace scenarios.
Which is better, PMP or CAPM?
PMP is the stronger certification, but it is only better for you if you qualify. Employers ask for PMP far more often, and PMI reports that PMP holders earn a 17% higher median salary across 21 countries. If you do not yet have the required experience leading projects, CAPM is the better choice today because you can earn it now and use it as a step towards PMP.
Is CAPM easier than PMP?
Yes, CAPM is easier than PMP. It has 150 questions in 180 minutes and focuses on concepts across four areas: fundamentals, predictive methods, agile and business analysis. PMP has 180 questions in 240 minutes, uses case and scenario questions, and expects you to think like an experienced project leader. A fresher can pass CAPM with steady study, while PMP rewards real leadership experience.
Is CAPM required for PMP?
No, CAPM is not required for PMP. You can apply for PMP directly if you meet the education and experience rules and complete 35 hours of training. However, an active CAPM counts as your 35 hours of training, so holding CAPM can make the PMP application simpler. It only helps if your CAPM is still active when you apply.
Which comes first, CAPM or PMP?
If you have no project leadership experience, CAPM comes first. You earn CAPM early, build experience leading projects, keep CAPM active with 15 PDUs every three years, and then apply for PMP. If you already meet the PMP experience rule, you can skip CAPM entirely and go straight to PMP, because recruiters will focus on your PMP status.
Can a fresher do PMP?
No, a fresher cannot do PMP, because PMI requires experience leading projects. With a bachelor's degree you need 36 months of such experience within the last 10 years, or 24 months with a degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme. A fresher should take CAPM instead, which needs no experience, and then move to PMP once the experience requirement is met.
Can a fresher do CAPM?
Yes, CAPM is designed for freshers. PMI asks only for a secondary degree such as a school-leaving certificate, a minimum age of 18 years, and at least 23 hours of project management education before the exam. No work experience is needed. That makes CAPM a good option for final-year students, recent graduates and career switchers who want to enter project roles.
What is the eligibility for CAPM?
To take CAPM you need a secondary degree, such as a high school diploma or global equivalent, you must be at least 18 years old, and you must complete at least 23 hours of project management education before the exam. PMI does not ask for any work experience. These rules are listed on PMI's CAPM certification page as of October 2026.
What is the eligibility for PMP in 2026?
In 2026 PMI asks for experience leading projects within the last 10 years, with no double-counting of overlapping projects. You need 60 months with a secondary diploma, 48 months with an associate's or vocational diploma, 36 months with a bachelor's degree, or 24 months with a GAC-accredited degree. You also need 35 hours of training, or an active CAPM.
How many questions are in the CAPM and PMP exams?
The CAPM exam has 150 questions, of which 135 are scored and 15 are unscored pretest questions, and you get 180 minutes. The PMP exam has 180 questions, of which 170 are scored and 10 are unscored, and you get 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks. You cannot tell which questions are unscored, so answer every one carefully.
What is the PMP exam fee in India?
PMI's PMP page showed India visitors a member price of ₹27,406 and a full price of ₹55,488 in October 2026. That is a difference of ₹28,082. You pay the exam fee only after your application is accepted. Membership rates apply only if you become a PMI member before you pay, so compare the saving with the current membership fee.
What is the CAPM certification cost in India?
PMI's CAPM page did not display a price when we checked in October 2026, so we cannot quote a verified CAPM fee. PMI prices vary by membership status and region, so log in to PMI's site from India to see your exact CAPM fee. Also budget for your 23 hours of project management education and any rescheduling charges.
Are the CAPM and PMP exams the same?
No, they are different exams. CAPM covers project management fundamentals, predictive methods, agile frameworks and business analysis frameworks. PMP covers three domains: People at 33%, Process at 41% and Business Environment at 26%. PMP also uses new case-study and graphic-based question types and is longer. Both use PMI's language and ideas, so CAPM study gives you a useful base.
How long is CAPM valid?
CAPM runs on a three-year cycle. To keep it active, you need to earn 15 PDUs, or Professional Development Units, in each three-year cycle, according to PMI's CCR Handbook. Keeping CAPM active matters if you plan to move to PMP, because only an active CAPM counts as your 35 hours of PMP training. Check PMI's site for the current CAPM renewal fee.
How long is PMP valid?
PMP is valid for three years at a time. To renew, you earn 60 PDUs per cycle, with at least 35 from education and at most 25 from giving back. The renewal fee in PMI's CCR Handbook is US$60 for members and US$150 for non-members. If you miss the requirements, your PMP is suspended for one year.
Does CAPM count towards the 35 hours for PMP?
Yes. PMI's July 2026 PMP content outline says an active CAPM gives you a 35-hour credit, so the PMP training requirement is waived. This is especially useful because, from 1 December 2026, live classes count only if they come from a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited programme. Make sure your CAPM is still active when you submit your PMP application.
Is CAPM worth it in India?
CAPM is worth it if you are a student, fresher or career switcher who wants a project role but lacks experience. It shows recruiters you know PMI's project language, helps for coordinator, PMO analyst and associate project manager roles, and covers the PMP training requirement later. It is not worth it if you already qualify for PMP, because employers look for PMP at that level.
Is PMP worth it?
PMP is worth it for professionals who already lead projects and want to grow into project manager, delivery manager or programme manager roles. PMI calls it the world's most widely held project certification, with more than 1.7 million holders, and reports a 17% higher median salary for PMP holders across 21 countries. Treat that figure as a global view, not an India guarantee.
Who earns more, CAPM or PMP holders?
PMP holders generally earn more because PMP requires years of leadership experience and is aimed at manager-level roles. PMI reports that PMP holders have a 17% higher median salary than people without it, across 21 countries. We found no reliable public salary figure for CAPM holders in India, so think of CAPM as a way into project work rather than a pay jump.
What is the full form of CAPM and PMP?
CAPM stands for Certified Associate in Project Management. PMP stands for Project Management Professional. Both are issued by PMI, the Project Management Institute. CAPM is the entry-level credential that needs no experience, while PMP is the flagship credential for people who have spent years leading projects. Many professionals earn CAPM first and PMP later.
Can I upgrade from CAPM to PMP?
There is no automatic upgrade, but CAPM makes the move easier. You still need to meet PMP's experience rule, such as 36 months leading projects with a bachelor's degree, and then apply and pass the PMP exam. The benefit is that an active CAPM covers PMP's 35-hour training requirement, so you do not need a separate course to qualify.
Should I take CAPM or PMP with 2 years of experience?
It depends on your degree and your role. With a bachelor's degree you need 36 months of experience leading projects, so two years is not enough and CAPM is the right step for now. With a degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme, 24 months of leading projects is enough for PMP. Only count work where you actually led, not just joined, a project.
Is PMI membership worth it for CAPM or PMP?
Often yes, but do the maths first. For PMP, the member exam price shown in India is ₹28,082 lower than the full price. If the current membership fee is less than that saving, joining first makes sense. Membership must start before you pay the exam fee. Members also get free digital PMI standards, including the PMBOK Guide.
Can I take the CAPM and PMP exams online?
Yes. PMI offers both exams at Pearson VUE test centres and online, so you can choose what suits you. The PMP online exam is delivered through OnVue. Some PMP question types, such as enhanced matching, hotspot and pull-down list questions, appear only at test centres. For CAPM you get up to three attempts in one year.
How does PMP vs CAPM compare with PRINCE2?
PRINCE2 is a separate certification run by PeopleCert, not PMI. PRINCE2 Foundation has no prerequisites and a 60-question, 60-minute exam, so it sits closer to CAPM in level. PMP remains the experienced-professional option. If you are choosing between these paths, compare which one employers in your industry and region ask for most often.
