Levels.fyi displayed a median annual total compensation of approximately INR 17.70 lakh, with a source update of 7 October 2026. That is a reported benchmark, not a fresher salary or monthly cash figure. For an individual application, the employer’s disclosed band and written pay breakup are more useful.

What does the available India salary data show?
Levels.fyi’s India FDE page, checked on 9 October 2026, showed these annual total-compensation figures. Its displayed update date was 7 October 2026.
| Reported measure | Annual INR | Lakh per annum |
|---|---|---|
| Median total compensation | 1,770,037 | Approximately 17.70 LPA |
| 25th percentile | 1,620,000 | 16.20 LPA |
| 75th percentile | 4,220,000 | 42.20 LPA |
| 90th percentile | 5,590,000 | 55.90 LPA |
The source groups this title under Software Engineer / Applications. A visible sample count and experience-specific breakdown were not verified. Percentiles are not fresher, mid-level and senior salary bands. Total compensation is not fixed salary or take-home pay.
Actual employer-advertised FDE salary bands in India
These are four individual job advertisements checked on 9 October 2026, not a market survey. All use the Forward Deployed Engineer title. Salary fields do not fully establish the fixed-versus-variable breakup; confirm that with the employer. A displayed vacancy can change or close after this check.
| Employer and source | Advertised annual band | Experience shown | Location and arrangement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat360 on Wellfound | INR 8-10 lakh; no equity listed | 1 year | Gurgaon, in office |
| Peakflo on Y Combinator | INR 10-13 lakh | Card: 1+ years; description: 0.5-2 years | India / remote within India |
| TechUp Labs on Wellfound | INR 10-25 lakh; no equity listed | 2 years | Remote India; Eastern Time preference |
| Alpha Nodus on Wellfound | INR 20-40 lakh; no equity listed | 6+ years, including 3+ customer-facing years in the description | Bengaluru, in office; US-aligned hours |
How to use this table: pick the row closest to your eligibility, open the source and compare responsibilities before discussing pay. The lowest and highest numbers across unrelated employers do not create a reliable India-wide range. Nor does a wide advertised band mean every eligible applicant can obtain its upper end.
These employers are public research examples, not Brolly Academy hiring partners. We have not verified accepted offers, actual employee earnings or the number of hires from these advertisements.
What can a fresher realistically expect?
A reliable zero-experience FDE salary range was not established by the sources reviewed. Early-career and fresher are different categories. An advertisement that asks for one year of work does not automatically accept a graduate with no experience. An internship may be relevant, but the employer decides how it counts.
The employer table provides more useful evidence than assigning a low percentile to every fresher. In particular, Peakflo’s card and description state different experience thresholds; clarify eligibility instead of treating the more generous wording as a confirmed exception.
A practical route for someone with no professional experience
- Check entry requirements first. Look for graduate, associate, internship or explicitly junior openings. Record whether production experience is essential or preferred.
- Prepare one complete application. Include an API or interface, validated data, error handling, a small test suite and instructions another person can follow.
- Show customer understanding. Explain the user’s problem, one constraint, your chosen scope and how you checked the result.
- Ask about the role’s approved band. Confirm whether it is fixed cash, total cash or CTC, and whether probation changes the terms.
- Consider adjacent entry roles. Junior backend, implementation or customer engineering work can build relevant experience. Check the work itself; the titles are not interchangeable.
During a salary conversation, explain your evidence without relabelling coursework as employment. A well-documented learning project can show readiness for further assessment; it does not replace a mandatory year of professional delivery. Use the FDE learning roadmap to identify gaps before paying for another certificate.
How experience changes the conversation
| Candidate situation | Evidence worth discussing | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher or recent graduate | Internships, a reproducible project, tests and a clear explanation of decisions. | A course certificate creates a guaranteed minimum salary. |
| Developer moving into customer delivery | Shipped applications, integration ownership and communication with users. | All previous years map directly to the same FDE level. |
| Experienced FDE or implementation engineer | Scope decisions, deployment responsibility, adoption and reusable delivery patterns. | A larger title always means a larger fixed salary. |
| Senior technical lead | Multiple delivery risks, architecture, mentoring and operating responsibility. | Senior compensation can be inferred from an entry-level advertisement. |
This table explains what to investigate; it is not an employer-approved grading system. Ask how the company defines its levels and whether the offer is for the level discussed during the interviews.
Discuss scope, not only years
Two candidates with the same years of experience may have handled very different responsibilities. One may have contributed to an internal service; another may have scoped an integration, managed a difficult rollout and supported users afterwards. Describe the responsibility you actually held, including who reviewed your decisions.
For an experienced transition, prepare two short examples: a delivery you owned and a failure you investigated. Explain the original problem, your contribution, the constraint and the observed result. Use measured outcomes only when you can substantiate them. Do not add a revenue or efficiency percentage because it sounds impressive.
Ask whether the proposed level recognises your transferable experience or treats you as new to customer deployment. If the employer offers a lower level, request the reason and the expectations for progression. A change of title alone does not establish either a promotion or a salary increase.
FDE salary in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and remote roles
Location research should distinguish a city estimate from an actual vacancy. Salary.com’s Hyderabad FDE page gives an average annual estimate of INR 14,65,580 with an as-of date of 22 April 2025. This is an older provider estimate, not a 2026 fresher offer or a current hiring budget.
For a more recent Hyderabad role example, Pulsora’s FDE India advertisement lists Hyderabad and asks for 3-7 years of relevant experience, but publishes no numeric salary band. Its existence helps establish role requirements, not a local pay average. Ask the recruiter for the approved range.
Compare locations without creating a false city ranking
- Hyderabad: check a current role’s level and compensation disclosure before relying on an older city estimate.
- Bengaluru or Gurgaon: the employer table contains individual in-office examples, not city-wide averages.
- Remote India: verify permitted work location, employing entity and mandatory overlap hours. Remote does not necessarily mean flexible hours.
- Relocation: compare the written relocation assistance, expected office attendance and your own recurring costs separately from salary.
A useful location comparison holds the level, employer type and pay definition as constant as possible. This small set of advertisements does not support a claim that one city always pays more than another. Keep older estimates in context instead of blending them into a supposedly current average.
CTC, fixed salary, bonus and equity are different
Start with the written compensation breakup, not the largest number on the offer summary. Employers can present packages differently, so ask what each label includes. The following is a comparison checklist, not a calculation of your personal tax or legal position.
| Component | What it means in your comparison | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed cash / gross salary | Recurring cash salary before payroll deductions. | What exact annual and monthly gross amounts are payable? |
| Variable pay / bonus | A conditional or target payment unless the terms expressly guarantee it. | What determines payout, when is it paid and is the first year prorated? |
| Equity | An ownership-related award with its own conditions, timing and risks. | What is granted, what vests each year and when could it become cash? |
| Joining bonus | Usually a separate one-time component in the comparison. | What are the payment date and any repayment conditions? |
| Employer benefits and contributions | Costs or benefits that may be included in headline CTC. | Which amounts are employer costs rather than monthly cash to me? |
| Travel or other reimbursement | Repayment of approved expenses, not automatically extra earnings. | Which costs qualify and how quickly are claims settled? |
Use three separate totals: recurring fixed cash, potential annual cash including variable pay, and other compensation. Keep joining payments outside the recurring total. Then compare the equity terms separately instead of assuming a quoted grant value is immediately spendable.
For example, an offer can have a higher headline CTC while providing less recurring cash. That does not automatically make it worse; it makes the trade-off important. Request an explanation of ambiguous wording and the documents governing the components. Use qualified payroll, tax or legal help for questions specific to your situation.
FDE salary per month: gross-pay calculation examples
Monthly gross fixed pay = annual fixed cash divided by 12, when it is distributed evenly across twelve months. The following figures are original arithmetic examples, not advertised market salaries. Use this calculation only after confirming the annual amount is fixed cash rather than CTC.
| Illustrative annual fixed cash | Approximate monthly gross fixed cash |
|---|---|
| INR 8,00,000 | INR 66,667 |
| INR 10,00,000 | INR 83,333 |
| INR 12,00,000 | INR 1,00,000 |
| INR 18,00,000 | INR 1,50,000 |
| INR 24,00,000 | INR 2,00,000 |
Amounts are rounded to the nearest rupee. Monthly take-home pay is different because payroll deductions and the payment structure matter. A target bonus paid at a later date is also not an amount you receive every month.
Turn the offer into a usable monthly comparison
- Locate the annual fixed-cash amount in the written breakup.
- Confirm the number and timing of salary payments.
- Calculate gross fixed cash per period, keeping bonus and joining payments separate.
- Ask payroll for a sample estimate with the applicable assumptions before planning your monthly budget.
Do not reverse-engineer an in-hand salary from a total-compensation headline. If a recruiter describes a package only as INR 20 LPA, the missing information is the breakup, not a more sophisticated calculator. Ask for that first.
Worked example: compare two hypothetical offers
Illustrative numbers only, not market salary data: suppose two offers use the same headline value of INR 20 lakh per year but have different components.
| Component | Hypothetical offer A | Hypothetical offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fixed cash | INR 16 lakh | INR 18 lakh |
| Target annual variable pay | INR 2 lakh | INR 1 lakh |
| Illustrative annual equity value | INR 2 lakh | INR 1 lakh |
| Headline sum | INR 20 lakh | INR 20 lakh |
Before any deductions, the fixed annual cash differs by INR 2 lakh. That is approximately INR 16,667 a month in gross fixed cash, not take-home pay. The headline sums look identical, but the cash certainty is different. This simplified example excludes benefits, tax and other employer costs.
Next inspect the variable-pay rules and equity terms. A target bonus is not the same as a guaranteed bonus. An estimated equity value is not necessarily money that can be sold immediately. Ask whether the quoted equity figure is annualised or covers the entire grant; comparing those two formats directly can greatly distort the offer.
Compare the first year and the following year separately
Suppose an employer also offers a one-time joining payment. Record it on a separate line with the payment conditions. It can change first-year cash but should not silently increase the recurring annual salary you expect in later years.
Next write two scenarios: fixed cash only, and fixed cash plus the stated target variable pay. Neither scenario should count uncertain equity proceeds as money available for ordinary monthly expenses. This is a way to make assumptions visible, not a forecast of what the employer will pay.
Finally compare the work: travel, customer escalations, office attendance, engineering review and learning opportunities. Compensation is one part of the decision. A higher amount is not enough information to judge whether the responsibilities or working arrangement fit your circumstances.
Why US FDE salary ranges do not establish Indian pay
The OpenAI Seattle FDE posting displayed USD 185,000-300,000 base pay plus equity when checked. It requested 5+ years of experience, described a hybrid Seattle role and mentioned travel up to 50%. This is evidence for one experienced US role, not an India salary benchmark.
Converting dollars into rupees changes the currency, not the job market or your eligibility. Compare country, location, seniority, employment arrangement and pay definition before using an overseas number. An international role may be a legitimate future goal, but its advertised range is not a typical outcome promised by a Hyderabad training course.
The same discipline applies to Palantir, AI labs and other well-known employers: use a current role-specific source. A company’s name alone does not tell you its India band, whether a role is open or whether you qualify. This guide does not invent company-specific India ranges where we have not verified them.
Remote employee versus contractor: compare the terms
A remote label describes where work may happen, not the entire employment arrangement. Before comparing an overseas contract with an Indian payroll offer, establish who engages you, the payment currency, expected working hours and which benefits or costs are included.
- Payment basis: annual salary, monthly retainer and hourly invoicing are different. Confirm which periods are paid.
- Time commitment: record the required overlap hours, customer travel and availability for incidents.
- Costs: ask who supplies the laptop, pays for work tools and reimburses authorised expenses.
- Continuity: read renewal, notice and termination provisions instead of assuming twelve months of guaranteed work.
- Currency: confirm the currency actually paid and who bears transfer or conversion charges.
- Benefits and leave: compare what is explicitly provided; do not assume a contract duplicates an employee package.
If the terms are unclear, request a written explanation before deciding that the higher headline amount is better. Cross-border tax, employment and contract questions need advice relevant to your circumstances. This article does not calculate an after-tax advantage or recommend a particular arrangement.
What qualifications support a stronger application?
There is no single education rule or mandatory FDE certificate across all employers. Match the specific posting. The examples below show how expectations vary; they are not a universal admissions checklist.
| Employer example | Requirement observed | How to assess your fit |
|---|---|---|
| Peakflo | Relevant technical degree; Python, SQL and AI/ML-related experience. | Check the degree and experience wording; prepare code and explain your contribution. |
| Pulsora | Relevant degree or equivalent practical experience; enterprise delivery and AI application skills. | Show integration work and customer-facing responsibility, not a certificate alone. |
| TechUp Labs | Python, backend/API work, debugging and communication. | Demonstrate a working integration and explain a failure you resolved. |
| Alpha Nodus | Experienced backend and customer-facing delivery; TypeScript/Node.js, AWS and PostgreSQL. | Compare your production ownership with the stated senior experience requirements. |
Make each skill claim inspectable
For programming, show readable code with tests. For integration, explain authentication, schema changes and retries. For customer communication, provide a permitted or synthetic problem brief and a short explanation of scope. For delivery, show a release checklist, monitoring plan and handover document.
If a role includes AI applications, explain how you checked answer quality and controlled actions. Naming several frameworks is not equivalent to demonstrating a dependable workflow. If the employer uses a different stack, explain transferable engineering concepts while being candid about what you have not used.
Certifications can support relevant knowledge, but do not claim an unearned credential or a fixed salary premium. A course completion certificate and professional production experience are different forms of evidence. The FDE resume and portfolio guide shows how to connect claims to artifacts without disguising learning work as paid employment.
Does an FDE earn more than a software engineer?
Not automatically. A title-only comparison can mix a senior customer-facing role with a junior software role, or an equity-heavy startup offer with a fixed-cash package. That does not establish an FDE salary premium.
- Compare similar experience and responsibility, not just matching years.
- Use the same location or employment market.
- Separate fixed cash, target variable pay, annual equity and one-time awards.
- Check whether travel, on-call work or customer ownership changes the job.
- Use several relevant sources or actual offers before drawing a broad conclusion.
If you enjoy customer discovery and delivery, FDE work may be a good fit even without a guaranteed premium. If you prefer sustained ownership of a product subsystem, evaluate that preference too. Read the FDE versus software engineer comparison for responsibilities; use this article for compensation interpretation.
How to discuss and negotiate an FDE salary
A useful negotiation explains the role, the evidence you bring and the component you want to discuss. It does not depend on an invented competing offer or an unrelated overseas salary screenshot.
- Clarify the level and range. Ask for the approved compensation band and how the employer distinguishes candidates within it.
- Connect your evidence to the work. Select two examples relevant to the advertised responsibility, such as an integration rollout and a customer-facing incident.
- Identify the specific gap. Is it recurring fixed cash, a conditional bonus, relocation cost or an unclear equity grant?
- Make one clear request. Explain the component and amount you want to discuss using a realistic, role-matched comparison.
- Confirm the revised terms in writing. An encouraging conversation is not a substitute for the updated offer.
A concise message you can adapt
Thank you for the offer. I am interested in the role and its customer-delivery responsibilities. Based on the scope discussed and my experience with [relevant, verifiable example], could we review the annual fixed-cash component? Please also confirm the variable-pay rules, equity schedule and working-hour expectations so I can compare the complete package accurately.
Replace the bracketed example with your own work. If you are a fresher, discuss project evidence and the entry-level band rather than claiming senior delivery experience. If the budget is fixed, ask what can be clarified or changed, but do not assume a future review guarantees a raise.
Prepare your questions before the call and take factual notes afterwards. Keep confidential offer documents private; a comparison does not require posting them publicly. Decide based on your circumstances and the written terms, not pressure to accept an impressive-sounding title.
A five-minute FDE offer-comparison worksheet
Use one column per offer and fill only confirmed information. Write not disclosed when a term is missing. The goal is to expose the questions that matter, not to force every offer into a single score.
| Record for each offer | What to enter | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Role, level and location | Exact title, grade, city and permitted remote arrangement. | Prevents comparing different jobs as if they were equivalent. |
| Recurring fixed cash | Annual amount, monthly gross amount and payment schedule. | Shows the recurring cash component clearly. |
| Variable and one-time payments | Target, conditions, payment dates and any repayment terms. | Separates contingent or temporary amounts. |
| Equity | Award type, quantity, quoted value basis and vesting details. | Avoids confusing an entire grant with one year of compensation. |
| Working expectations | Office days, time-zone overlap, travel and incident duties. | Makes the practical commitment visible. |
| Support and progression | Manager, engineering review, onboarding and review criteria. | Helps assess development opportunities without assuming outcomes. |
| Open questions | Owner, question and date a written reply is expected. | Turns uncertainty into a follow-up action. |
Three checks before you decide
- Evidence check: every amount comes from the offer or a written clarification, not memory.
- Consistency check: annual and monthly figures agree, and one-time awards are separated.
- Fit check: you understand the day-to-day responsibilities and the support available.
An unresolved question is not automatically a reason to reject an offer. It is a reason to seek clarification. However, pressure to accept unexplained figures or contradictory terms should not be solved by guessing what the employer probably meant.
Questions to ask before accepting an FDE offer
- What is the annual fixed-pay component and which components are conditional?
- What level is being offered, and how is that level defined?
- Is there a joining bonus, and what repayment conditions apply?
- How is equity valued, granted and vested?
- How much customer travel is expected and which expenses are reimbursed?
- Are on-call duties, weekend releases or time-zone overlap part of the role?
- Who owns the application after the initial deployment?
- Which goals determine the performance review?
- Which details will be confirmed in the written offer?
Evaluate role fit alongside compensation. A high headline number may come with responsibilities you do not want, while a lower number may offer a better learning environment. Neither conclusion should be assumed without understanding the actual work.
Also ask what the first customer engagement looks like, who reviews your code and who can approve a change in scope. These questions help you interpret a salary in the context of the responsibility behind it. Use the FDE jobs guide for a broader application workflow and the interview guide to practise explaining your evidence.
Plan training without treating it as a salary investment guarantee
Choose training by the gap it can help you close. If you cannot yet build and debug an API, start with foundations. If you already deliver software, focus on discovery, integration, evaluation and explaining decisions to customers. A salary article can inform your research; it cannot tell an employer what to pay you.
Brolly Academy’s Forward Deployed Engineer Course is a two-month learning option with trainer Manish. Confirmed tuition is INR 20,000 online or INR 25,000 classroom. Use the free demo to discuss your starting point, project work, class hours and feedback arrangements before enrolling.
Bring one role description to the demo and identify three requirements you need to practise. Ask what work you will produce and how it will be reviewed. Course completion does not waive an employer’s experience requirements or guarantee a salary, placement or promotion. For self-directed preparation, start with the step-by-step FDE roadmap.
How this salary guide was researched
Source check: 9 October 2026. We distinguish three kinds of evidence: a compensation provider’s reported statistics, employer-advertised pay bands, and clearly labelled original arithmetic examples. These should not be blended into one average.
- Provider data: preserve the source’s location, metric and displayed update date; disclose missing sample or experience detail.
- Employer advertisements: record title, location, experience and pay wording from the linked page. An advertisement is not proof of an accepted offer or employee earnings.
- Older estimates: state their original date even when the page was checked recently.
- Worked examples: use hypothetical amounts to explain a comparison, not to imply market demand or hiring outcomes.
The four pay-disclosing advertisements are a small convenience sample, not representative of every Indian employer. We have not measured a nationwide fresher range, a city premium, an FDE-versus-software-engineer premium or a course-linked pay increase. Reopen the original posting before applying; a publication date alone does not guarantee an opening remains available.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average FDE salary in India?
This guide reports a sourced median, not a national arithmetic average. Check the benchmark table for the value, metric and source date. For an application, compare the specific employer band and written fixed-pay breakup.
What salary can a fresher expect as an FDE?
The reviewed evidence does not establish a reliable zero-experience range. Early-career advertisements can still require professional experience. Check whether a role explicitly accepts graduates and ask for its approved entry-level band.
What is the salary for an FDE with two years of experience?
One two-year example is included in the employer table, but a single advertisement is not a market-wide band. Match your responsibilities, stack, location and pay definition before using it as a comparison.
What is the FDE salary in Hyderabad?
The city section separates an older provider estimate from a newer Hyderabad role with no published numeric band. That evidence does not establish a current Hyderabad fresher salary; request the range for the actual vacancy.
How do I calculate FDE salary per month?
Divide confirmed annual fixed cash by twelve if it is paid evenly each month. For example, INR 12 lakh annual fixed cash equals INR 1 lakh monthly gross before deductions. This is not a calculation of take-home pay.
Is CTC the same as fixed salary?
No. Headline CTC may include conditional payments, benefits or employer costs. Ask for a written breakup and compare recurring fixed cash separately from variable pay, equity and one-time awards.
Does FDE pay more than software engineering?
There is no universal premium established here. Compare similar levels, locations and compensation structures. Different responsibilities and employer budgets can matter more than the title.
Do remote FDE roles pay US salaries in India?
Not necessarily. Verify the permitted location, employing entity, payment currency and contract type. A US-located salary advertisement does not establish the pay of an India-based remote role.
Do I need a computer-science degree?
The education rule depends on the vacancy. Some employers specify a relevant degree; others allow equivalent practical experience. Read the precise requirement instead of assuming every FDE employer has the same policy.
Will certification guarantee a salary increase?
No. A credential can support a relevant learning claim, but employers assess role fit and evidence of capability. Neither a certificate nor course completion guarantees a job, salary band or promotion.
Why can two INR 20 LPA offers be different?
Their fixed cash, conditional bonus, equity, benefits and one-time payments may differ. The worked example shows why the same headline sum can provide different recurring cash before deductions.
What should I ask a recruiter before giving a salary expectation?
Clarify the role level, approved band, pay definition, location and working expectations. Then explain the experience or project evidence relevant to that scope. Do not base the discussion on an unrelated overseas package.
Are these employers placement partners of Brolly Academy?
No partnership is claimed. These are linked public research examples, not academy placement commitments or evidence of graduate outcomes. Verify job availability directly with the employer.
