Quick answer
For long videos watched mostly by Indian viewers, YouTube income per 1,000 views is roughly ₹25 to ₹150, but it varies widely by niche, audience country and season (upGrowth estimates, September 2026). YouTube does not pay a fixed rate per view. You earn a share of what advertisers spend on your videos. Your earnings per 1,000 views are called RPM, and your real number is in YouTube Studio.
- Long videos: you keep 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue (YouTube Help, October 2026)
- Shorts: you keep 45% of the revenue allocated to you from the Shorts Creator Pool (YouTube Help, October 2026)
- Finance, real estate, education and tech earn more per 1,000 views than gaming, music or comedy
- Shorts earn far less per 1,000 views, around ₹5 to ₹30 in upGrowth's India estimates (September 2026)
- Formula: Estimated earnings = (Views ÷ 1,000) × RPM
Key takeaways
- There is no fixed "per 1,000 views" rate. Your income depends on how much advertisers pay to reach your viewers.
- RPM is your number, CPM is the advertiser's. RPM is what you earn per 1,000 views after YouTube's share.
- Who watches matters more than how many. Viewer country and topic move RPM more than anything else.
- Shorts and long videos are paid differently. Long videos usually earn much more per 1,000 views.
- Ads are only one income stream. Memberships, Super Chat, sponsorships and your own products can earn more than AdSense.
1. How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views in India?
Short answer: YouTube does not pay a set amount per 1,000 views. For long videos with mostly Indian viewers, upGrowth estimates RPM at about ₹25 to ₹150 per 1,000 views, with finance near the top and music or gaming near the bottom (September 2026). Your own number can be lower or higher.
New creators often hear "₹100 per 1,000 views" and expect it on every video. In reality, YouTube shares the money advertisers spend on your videos. If advertisers pay more to reach your audience, you earn more. If few ads run, you earn less.
The upGrowth YouTube CPM India guide published these estimates in September 2026. They are its own estimates, not official YouTube data:
Source: upGrowth estimates, September 2026, using ₹96 to US$1.
YouTube does not publish an official RPM for India or any niche, and ad prices move with the season. Use outside ranges to set expectations, and the RPM in your own YouTube Studio to plan.
2. CPM vs RPM: the two numbers you must understand
Short answer: CPM is what advertisers pay for 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what you earn per 1,000 views after YouTube's revenue share, counting all views, including those without ads. RPM is always lower than CPM, and it is the better measure of your real income.
YouTube defines both on its ad revenue analytics help page (YouTube Help, October 2026):
Why your RPM is lower than your CPM
YouTube gives two reasons:
- RPM is calculated after YouTube's revenue share. CPM is the full amount the advertiser pays.
- RPM counts every view, including views that were not monetized. Some viewers use YouTube Premium, some videos only suit limited ads, and sometimes no advertiser bids.
What RPM includes
RPM is not only ad money. YouTube Help says it is based on several revenue sources, including ads, channel memberships, YouTube Premium revenue, Super Chat and Super Stickers. So channels with active members and live chat can see a higher RPM than channels with the same ad rates.
Tip: The Revenue tab in YouTube Studio Analytics shows estimated revenue, RPM and CPM. Check them monthly.
3. How YouTube splits ad revenue: 55% and 45%
Short answer: For long videos, YouTube pays partners 55% of net revenue from Watch Page ads. For Shorts, ad revenue goes into a monthly Creator Pool, and you keep 45% of the revenue allocated to you (YouTube Help, October 2026).
These shares come from YouTube's partner earnings overview (YouTube Help, October 2026).
Long videos (Watch Page)
Once you accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, YouTube pays you 55% of net revenues from ads on your public videos on the Watch Page. The same applies when your videos play inside the YouTube player on other websites or apps.
Illustrative example: if the net ad revenue from one long video is ₹1,000, you receive about ₹550.
Shorts (Shorts Feed)
Ads in Shorts play between videos in the feed, so the money is pooled. The Shorts monetization policies explain how (YouTube Help, October 2026):
- Each month, ad revenue from ads between Shorts is pooled.
- Part goes to a Creator Pool and part covers music licensing. A Short with no music sends all its share to the pool. With one track, half goes to the pool. With two tracks, one-third does.
- The Creator Pool is shared among monetizing creators based on their share of engaged views in each country.
- You keep 45% of the revenue allocated to you, whether or not you used music.
YouTube's own example: a creator with 1% of a $90,000 pool gets $900 allocated and earns $405 after the 45% share.
Estimates can change
YouTube says monthly estimated revenue is subject to adjustments for invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, and certain ad campaign types. Do not treat the daily figure in Studio as money already earned.
For subscriber and watch hour thresholds, read our guide to YouTube monetization rules, which covers Partner Program eligibility, application steps and policies.
4. YouTube RPM in India by niche
Short answer: Niche is one of the biggest drivers of income per 1,000 views. In upGrowth's India estimates (September 2026), finance and investment channels earn about ₹100 to ₹150 RPM, while gaming and music channels earn about ₹25 to ₹60.
Think about who advertises next to each video. A mutual fund video attracts banks, brokers and insurers, who pay a lot for each customer and bid high. A meme compilation attracts fewer high-value advertisers.
Source: upGrowth estimates for long videos with mostly Indian viewers, September 2026. Not official YouTube figures; real RPMs vary widely.
Should you choose a niche only for RPM? No. A high RPM does not help if you cannot make 100 videos on the topic. A gaming channel with a loyal audience can earn more in total than a finance channel nobody watches. Pick a topic you can sustain, then raise RPM inside it.
5. What affects your YouTube income per 1,000 views
Short answer: Niche, viewer country, season, ad formats, video length, the share of monetized views and viewer device all change your income per 1,000 views. YouTube itself names season, audience location and ad format mix as reasons CPM changes (YouTube Help, October 2026).
1. Audience country. YouTube Help says different locations have different levels of ad competition. upGrowth's estimates put RPM for a mostly US audience at about ₹670 to ₹1,340, far above ₹25 to ₹150 for a mostly Indian audience (September 2026).
2. Niche. Topics linked to money decisions attract higher-paying advertisers. Even on one channel, a "best credit cards" video may out-earn a casual vlog.
3. Season. YouTube Help notes that advertisers bid higher or lower depending on the time of year. upGrowth describes October and November, around Diwali, as a peak for e-commerce and brand ad demand in India, with travel and lifestyle ads rising in December (September 2026). When festive demand ends, ad prices can soften again.
4. Ad formats. A shift in the mix of available ad formats changes CPM. If your video only suits limited ads, fewer advertisers can bid.
5. Video length and mid-rolls. On monetized videos of 8 minutes or longer, you can turn on ads in the middle of the video, according to YouTube's help page on mid-roll ad breaks (October 2026). You can place slots manually, let YouTube choose natural breaks, or combine both. Do not stretch a video just to cross 8 minutes. Viewers who leave early never see mid-rolls.
6. Monetized views. YouTube says your RPM may go down when unmonetized views rise, even if revenue stays the same.
7. Advertiser-friendly content. Heavy swearing, violence or shock titles can lead to limited or no ads.
8. Device. upGrowth estimates desktop RPM at about ₹80 to ₹150 and mobile at ₹50 to ₹100 in mid-paying niches (September 2026). A phone-heavy audience usually means a lower RPM.
6. Shorts vs long videos: income per 1,000 views
Short answer: Long videos usually earn much more per 1,000 views than Shorts. upGrowth estimates Shorts RPM in India at about ₹5 to ₹30, against ₹25 to ₹150 for long videos (September 2026). Shorts revenue is pooled, and your share is 45% instead of 55%.
Revenue shares and view counting: YouTube Help, October 2026. RPM ranges: upGrowth estimates, September 2026.
Shorts pay less per view because ads are not attached to your Short, part of the pool can go to music licensing, your share is lower, and viewers swipe through many Shorts quickly. That does not mean you should skip them. Shorts help new viewers find you, and long videos then earn ad money and build trust. Our guide on how to grow a YouTube channel shows how to use Shorts as a funnel to long videos.
7. How to calculate your expected YouTube earnings
Short answer: Estimated earnings = (Views ÷ 1,000) × RPM. Before monetization, use a cautious RPM from the low end of your niche's range. After monetization, use your own 90-day RPM from YouTube Studio.
RPM already includes YouTube's share and unmonetized views, so do not subtract YouTube's share again.
Illustrative example (not real data)
Say you run a Telugu cooking channel and your long videos get 2 lakh views in a month. Using the cooking range from section 4 (₹50 to ₹80):
- Low case: (2,00,000 ÷ 1,000) × ₹50 = ₹10,000
- High case: (2,00,000 ÷ 1,000) × ₹80 = ₹16,000
This shows the method only. Your real RPM may differ.
Quick reference table (example RPMs)
The RPM values below are examples picked from the ranges above, not predictions.
Income per 1 million views (example)
1 million views is 10 lakh views. With upGrowth's long-form India range of ₹25 to ₹150, that works out to about ₹25,000 to ₹1,50,000. With its Shorts range of ₹5 to ₹30, 1 million Shorts views comes to about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000. Treat both as rough examples.
For a realistic estimate, use 90 days of data, calculate Shorts and long videos separately, and remember that final earnings can be adjusted. YouTube income is also taxable in India, so speak to a chartered accountant about your case.
8. Can you earn from YouTube without ads?
Short answer: Yes. Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, YouTube Premium revenue and Shopping all pay creators, and many creators earn more from sponsorships, affiliate links and their own products than from ads.
A view that shows no ad earns no ad revenue. You may still earn a little when YouTube Premium members watch, which is why Premium revenue is part of RPM. Beyond that, these streams depend less on raw views:
Our guide on how to earn money from YouTube explains each stream and its requirements.
9. YouTuber salary in India: the reality
Short answer: Independent YouTubers do not get a salary. Their income is a share of ad revenue plus memberships, sponsorships and product sales, and it changes every month. YouTube says it paid more than ₹21,000 crore to creators, artists and media companies in India over three years (YouTube Official Blog, May 2025), but that is shared across a very large number of channels.
A YouTuber is closer to a small business owner than an employee. Some months bring a viral video and a brand deal. Others bring a dip in views and lower ad rates. Anyone quoting one "YouTuber salary" is guessing.
At the WAVES summit in Mumbai, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said YouTube had paid more than ₹21,000 crore to creators, artists and media companies across India in three years (YouTube Official Blog, May 2025). The same post said over 100 million channels in India uploaded content in the previous year, and more than 15,000 Indian channels had over 1 million subscribers. The payout is large, but so is the number of channels. Most channels never earn a meaningful income.
Be careful with "income by subscriber count" charts. YouTube pays for views and engagement, not subscribers. A big channel with few new views earns little, while a smaller channel with steady search views can earn reliably.
If you want a monthly salary, look at jobs around YouTube, such as channel manager, video editor, scriptwriter or YouTube SEO specialist, which agencies and brands hire for.
10. How and when YouTube pays you
Short answer: YouTube pays through AdSense for YouTube once a month. Finalized earnings for the previous month are added to your balance between the 7th and 12th, and payouts happen between the 21st and 26th if you reach your local payment threshold and have no holds (YouTube Help, October 2026).
- During the month, YouTube Studio shows estimated revenue.
- Adjustments happen after a week and in the middle of the following month.
- Between the 7th and 12th, finalized earnings reach your AdSense for YouTube balance.
- Between the 21st and 26th, YouTube pays you if your balance has reached your local payment threshold.
If you are below the threshold, the balance carries over. Complete your payment, identity and tax details in AdSense for YouTube before your first payout.
11. How to increase your YouTube RPM
Short answer: Attract viewers advertisers value, keep videos advertiser-friendly, use mid-rolls on videos of 8 minutes or more, improve retention, and add memberships and live Super Chat, which also count in RPM.
- Cover topics close to buying decisions, such as reviews, comparisons and "best for" lists in your niche.
- Reach beyond one region where it fits. English or bilingual videos on universal topics can reach countries with stronger ad markets.
- Stay advertiser-friendly. Avoid heavy swearing, shock thumbnails and graphic scenes.
- Use mid-rolls wisely on 8-minute-plus videos, at natural pauses.
- Improve retention. Mid-rolls only earn if people are still watching.
- Publish your best work in October and November, when festive ad demand is high.
- Go live and add memberships once eligible, since both count in RPM.
- Rank in search. Our YouTube SEO guide covers keywords, titles and descriptions.
- Build evergreen videos that keep earning for years.
- Never buy views. Invalid traffic is removed from earnings and can put your channel at risk.

Frequently asked questions
How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views in India?
YouTube does not pay a fixed amount for 1,000 views. For long videos watched mostly by Indian viewers, upGrowth estimated RPM at about ₹25 to ₹150 per 1,000 views in September 2026. Finance channels tend to sit near the top and gaming or music channels near the bottom. Your real figure is the RPM in YouTube Studio.
What is RPM on YouTube?
RPM means revenue per mille, or revenue per 1,000 views. It shows how much you earned per 1,000 views after YouTube's revenue share, counting all views, including those without ads. YouTube Help says it includes ads, channel memberships, YouTube Premium revenue, Super Chat and Super Stickers.
What is the difference between CPM and RPM?
CPM is what advertisers spend for 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what you earn per 1,000 views after YouTube's share. RPM is always lower because it is calculated after the revenue share and includes views that showed no ads. Use RPM, not CPM, to plan your income.
How much of the ad money does YouTube keep?
For long videos, YouTube pays creators 55% of net Watch Page ad revenue and keeps the rest. For Shorts, ad revenue is pooled each month, part may cover music licensing, and creators keep 45% of the revenue allocated to them from the Creator Pool.
How much does YouTube pay for 1 million views in India?
Using upGrowth's long-form India RPM range of ₹25 to ₹150, 1 million views works out to roughly ₹25,000 to ₹1,50,000. For Shorts, its ₹5 to ₹30 range gives roughly ₹5,000 to ₹30,000. These are worked examples from estimates, and your niche and audience can move the figure a lot.
How much do YouTube Shorts pay per 1,000 views in India?
Shorts usually pay much less than long videos. upGrowth estimated Shorts RPM in India at about ₹5 to ₹30 in September 2026. Shorts ad revenue is pooled monthly, and you keep 45% of the revenue allocated to you based on your share of engaged views in each country.
Why do Shorts earn less than long videos?
Shorts ads run between Shorts in the feed, so the money is pooled and shared among creators. Part of the pool can go to music licensing, and your share is 45% instead of 55% on long videos. Viewers also swipe through Shorts quickly, so each view carries less ad value.
Does YouTube pay per view or per ad?
YouTube pays you a share of the ad revenue your videos generate, not a fixed amount per view. Advertisers pay for ad impressions or playbacks with ads. RPM then spreads your earnings across all views, including views without ads, so two videos with equal views can earn very different amounts.
Can I earn money from YouTube views without ads?
A view without an ad earns no ad revenue, but you may earn a little when YouTube Premium members watch, because Premium revenue is part of RPM. You can also earn through channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, YouTube Shopping, sponsorships, affiliate links and your own courses or services.
Which YouTube niche has the highest RPM in India?
In upGrowth's September 2026 estimates, finance and investment had the highest RPM in India at about ₹100 to ₹150 per 1,000 views, followed by real estate, education and technology. Gaming, music and comedy were near the bottom. Topics close to buying decisions attract advertisers who pay more.
Why is YouTube RPM low in India?
YouTube Help says different locations have different levels of ad competition, and upGrowth's estimates show a much lower RPM for mostly Indian audiences than for US audiences. Mobile viewing tends to earn less than desktop in those estimates, and RPM also counts views that showed no ads, which pulls the average down.
Why is my YouTube RPM going down?
YouTube Help lists seasonal changes in advertiser bidding, a shift in where your viewers live, changes in the mix of ad formats, and a rise in unmonetized views. In India, ad prices can soften after the festive period ends. Compare your RPM over 90 days instead of one week.
What is a good YouTube RPM in India?
It depends on your niche. A gaming or music channel near the top of its estimated ₹25 to ₹60 range is doing well, while a finance channel would aim for upGrowth's ₹100 to ₹150 range. The most useful comparison is your own RPM against your past months.
How do I calculate my YouTube earnings?
Divide your views by 1,000 and multiply by your RPM. For example, 2 lakh views at an RPM of ₹50 gives 200 times ₹50, which is ₹10,000. Do not subtract YouTube's share again, because RPM is already calculated after it. Use your own 90-day RPM once monetized.
Is there an official YouTube income calculator?
YouTube does not offer a public calculator that predicts income before you are monetized. After you join the Partner Program, the Revenue tab in YouTube Studio Analytics shows your estimated revenue, RPM and CPM. Third-party calculators only multiply views by an assumed rate, which you can do with the RPM formula.
Do longer videos earn more money on YouTube?
Often, yes. On monetized videos of 8 minutes or longer, you can turn on mid-roll ads, which can add ad impressions per view. But length only helps if viewers keep watching. People who leave early never see mid-rolls, so make videos only as long as the content needs.
Does the number of subscribers affect YouTube income?
Not directly. YouTube pays for views and engagement, not subscribers. A big channel with few new views earns little, while a smaller channel with steady search views can earn reliably. Subscribers still help because they give new videos early views and support memberships and live chat income.
What is the salary of a YouTuber in India?
Independent YouTubers do not get a fixed salary. Their income comes from ad revenue share, memberships, Super Chat, sponsorships, affiliate links and product sales, and it changes monthly. YouTube said it paid more than ₹21,000 crore to creators, artists and media companies in India over three years, spread across a very large number of channels.
How many Indian YouTube channels have over 1 million subscribers?
YouTube's official blog post from the WAVES summit in May 2025 said more than 15,000 channels in India had over 1 million subscribers. The same post said over 100 million channels in India uploaded content in the previous year, which shows how competitive the platform is.
When does YouTube pay creators?
Finalized earnings for the previous month reach your AdSense for YouTube balance between the 7th and 12th. Payouts happen between the 21st and 26th, if your balance has reached your local payment threshold and there are no holds. Below the threshold, your balance carries forward to the next month.
Why are my final YouTube earnings lower than the estimate?
YouTube says monthly estimated revenue is subject to adjustments for invalid traffic, Content ID claims and disputes, and certain ad campaign types. Adjustments happen after about a week and in the middle of the following month, so the figure in YouTube Studio during the month can drop when finalized.
Does audience country change YouTube earnings?
Yes, a lot. YouTube Help says different locations have different levels of ad competition. upGrowth estimated RPM for a mostly US audience at about ₹670 to ₹1,340 per 1,000 views in September 2026, compared with about ₹25 to ₹150 for a mostly Indian audience.
Is October to December a good time for YouTube earnings in India?
Usually, yes. YouTube Help notes that advertisers bid differently through the year. upGrowth describes October and November, around Diwali, as a peak for e-commerce and brand ad demand in India, with travel and lifestyle ads rising in December. Publishing strong videos then can lift earnings.
How can I increase my YouTube income per 1,000 views?
Cover topics close to buying decisions, stay advertiser-friendly, use mid-rolls on videos of 8 minutes or more, and improve retention. Go live, add memberships, rank in YouTube search and build evergreen videos. Never buy views, because invalid traffic is removed from earnings and risks your channel.

Yes. Brolly Academy's YouTube Training in Hyderabad is a 1-month course with 27 modules, including YouTube Analytics, SEO, AdSense monetisation and Partner Program approval.
