Cyber Security Interview Questions and Answers
Here are 10 cyber security interview questions we practise in mock interviews for SOC analyst and security analyst roles, with short answers.
1. What is the CIA triad?
Confidentiality (only authorised people can see data), integrity (data is not changed without authorisation) and availability (systems and data are accessible when needed). Most security controls protect one or more of these three goals.
2. What is the difference between IDS and IPS?
An intrusion detection system monitors traffic and raises alerts on suspicious activity. An intrusion prevention system sits in the traffic path and can block or drop malicious traffic automatically.
3. What is the difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption?
Symmetric encryption uses one shared key to encrypt and decrypt, such as AES, and is fast. Asymmetric encryption uses a public and private key pair, such as RSA, and is used for key exchange and digital signatures.
4. How is hashing different from encryption?
Encryption is reversible with the right key. Hashing is one-way: it turns data into a fixed-length value, such as with SHA-256, and is used to store passwords (with salting) and check integrity.
5. What is the difference between a vulnerability, a threat and a risk?
A vulnerability is a weakness, a threat is something that could exploit it, and risk is the likelihood and impact of that happening. Security teams reduce risk by fixing vulnerabilities or adding controls.
6. What does a SIEM do?
A SIEM collects logs from servers, firewalls and applications, correlates events and raises alerts so SOC analysts can investigate. Splunk and the ELK stack are common examples.
7. What are the main phases of incident response?
Preparation, detection and analysis, containment, eradication and recovery, and post-incident review. NIST SP 800-61 Revision 3 now aligns incident response with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0.
8. What is MITRE ATT&CK?
A public knowledge base of real-world attacker tactics and techniques. SOC teams use MITRE ATT&CK to map detections, find gaps and describe attacks in a common language.
9. How would you defend an organisation against phishing?
Email filtering with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, user awareness training, multi-factor authentication so stolen passwords are less useful, and a simple way for staff to report suspicious emails.
10. What is zero trust?
A security model that never trusts a user or device by default, even inside the network. Every request is verified using identity, device health and least-privilege access.

6. Can freshers and non-IT students learn cyber security?
Yes. The course starts from the basics and is designed to make freshers job-ready, so students from non-IT backgrounds, including commerce graduates, can learn cyber security step by step. Coding is not mandatory; basic scripting is taught where needed, and no advanced mathematics is required, only logical thinking.
7. What is the salary of a cyber security fresher in Hyderabad?
Freshers in Hyderabad typically earn around ₹3–5 LPA as SOC analysts or cyber security analysts, and around ₹4–6.5 LPA as ethical hackers or penetration testers. 12. Is cyber security better than ethical hacking?
Ethical hacking is one part of cyber security. That broader scope offers more career options, so our course teaches ethical hacking within a complete security syllabus.
13. Does the Cyber Security course include real-time projects?

These give you a portfolio to discuss confidently in interviews.
14. Is cyber security a good career in Hyderabad?
Yes. Hyderabad has strong demand for cyber security professionals because of its IT companies, MNCs and security operations centres. Roles such as SOC analyst, cyber security analyst, ethical hacker and security operations executive suit freshers, and demand continues across IT, banking, healthcare, e-commerce and government sectors.
15. Are cyber security courses available near me in Kukatpally or JNTU?
Yes. Brolly Academy is at Metro Pillar No. A689, Dr Atmaram Estates, 3rd Floor, Nizampet X Roads, near JNTU Metro Station, Hyderabad 500072. 16. Which cyber security certification should I take first?
If you are new to security, start with ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), then CompTIA Security+. After that, choose CEH for penetration testing or a SOC-focused path for blue team roles. CISSP comes later, after 5 years of experience.
17. How much does the ISC2 CC exam cost?
The ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity exam costs USD 199, according to ISC2, and certified members pay an annual maintenance fee. The exam lasts 2 hours, has 100–125 items and needs no work experience.
18. Does the cyber security course prepare me for CEH?
The course covers ethical hacking foundations in Module 13 and the hacking labs in month 2. For full CEH-aligned depth, including CEH v13 exam guidance, join our ethical hacking course after this course.
19. Can freshers take the CISSP exam?
Freshers can sit the exam, but full CISSP certification needs 5 years of paid work in two or more of the eight CISSP domains (one year can be waived). Without it you become an Associate of ISC2 until you gain the experience.
20. Does the course cover SOC and SIEM tools?
Yes. Month 2 covers SOC fundamentals, Splunk and ELK basics, log monitoring and incident response, and Project 3 is a SIEM monitoring project. For a full SOC career track, see our SOC analyst training and SOC analyst salary in India.
