Quick answer
Generative AI tools are apps and platforms that create new text, images, video, audio or code from a plain-language instruction called a prompt; the most useful ones in October 2026 are chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, image tools such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, video tools such as Veo and Runway, coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot and Cursor, and developer tools such as Hugging Face and LangChain. You do not need all of them. Pick one tool per job, start with a free plan where one exists, and learn to check the output. Developers should also learn the building blocks behind these apps: model APIs, frameworks and vector databases.
- Everyday writing and thinking: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI
- Images and design: Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Ideogram, Google's Nano Banana models, Adobe Firefly, Canva
- Video and audio: Google Veo, Runway, Synthesia, HeyGen, Pika, ElevenLabs, Suno
- Code: GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Amazon Q Developer and Kiro
- Build your own GenAI apps: OpenAI, Gemini and Claude APIs, Hugging Face, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Ollama, Pinecone, Chroma, FAISS
Key takeaways
- Group tools by the job they do (write, draw, film, speak, code, research, build). That is the fastest way to pick one.
- Many tools have a free plan as of October 2026, including Gemini, Claude, Meta AI, Ideogram, Runway, ElevenLabs, Suno, GitHub Copilot and Cursor, but limits are tight and plans change often.
- Naming changed a lot in 2026: Vertex AI is now part of Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Azure AI Foundry is now Microsoft Foundry, and the Sora 2 API was shut down on 24 September 2026.
- Indian platforms such as Sarvam AI, Krutrim and BharatGen focus on Indian languages and keeping data in India.
- Never paste personal, client or company-confidential data into a tool your employer has not approved, and always check facts before you use an answer.
1. Generative AI tools at a glance
Short answer: Here are 45+ generative AI tools in one table, grouped by category, with what each is best for and whether a free option was confirmed on the official site in October 2026.
"Free option" below means a free plan, free tier or open-source version that we confirmed on an official page on 24 October 2026. "Not confirmed" does not mean the tool is paid; it means we could not verify the plan, so check the tool's own site. Plans change often.
2. What are generative AI tools?
Short answer: A generative AI tool is software that uses a trained AI model to produce new content, such as text, images, video, audio or code, when you describe what you want in plain language.
Under the hood, most tools run on a foundation model, which is a large model trained on broad data that can be adapted to many tasks. Text tools use a large language model (LLM), which is a foundation model trained on huge amounts of text to predict the next token. Most LLMs use the transformer, a neural network design introduced by Google researchers in 2017. A token is a small chunk of text; Google's Gemini documentation says one token is about 4 characters, and 100 tokens are about 60 to 80 English words (Google AI for Developers, October 2026). Image and video tools usually use diffusion models, which learn to turn random noise into a picture step by step. If you want the full concept explained, read our guide on what generative AI is.
Every tool on this page follows the same basic flow:
- You give a prompt: an instruction, question, file or image.
- The tool sends it to a model: for example GPT, Gemini, Claude, Stable Diffusion or Veo.
- The model generates output: text, an image, a clip, audio or code.
- You review and refine: you check facts, ask for changes and edit.
Step 4 matters most. Models can produce confident but false content. NIST's Generative AI Profile calls this "confabulation", which most people call hallucination, and lists it among 12 risks of generative AI (NIST AI 600-1, July 2024).
So is ChatGPT a generative AI tool? Yes. It generates new text (and images) from your prompts. A spam filter or a fraud-score model is also AI, but it classifies or predicts rather than creates, so it is not generative. For more on that difference, see Generative AI vs traditional AI.
3. Text and chat assistants
Short answer: Chat assistants are the best place to start; Gemini, Claude and Meta AI have confirmed free options as of October 2026, while ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity are widely used but we could not confirm their current plans.
These tools answer questions, draft emails, summarise PDFs, explain code and help you plan. Many also accept images. A model that handles more than one type of input or output, such as text plus images, is called multimodal.
ChatGPT (OpenAI). The best-known chat assistant, released by OpenAI in late 2022. OpenAI's model page lists the GPT-6 family as its flagship models in October 2026, plus GPT-Image-2.5 models for images. Best for: everyday writing, ideas and learning. We could not verify its current plan details from an official page, so check its pricing yourself.
Google Gemini. Google's assistant, linked to your Google account. The Gemini subscriptions page for India shows a "Free of charge" tier and Google AI Pro at ₹399 a month, and advertises Gemini 4 Argon (Google, October 2026). Best for: students and professionals who already use Gmail, Docs and Drive.
Claude (Anthropic). Anthropic's assistant on web, desktop and mobile. Its pricing page shows a Free plan at $0 and Pro at $20 billed monthly (Anthropic, October 2026). Current Claude models (Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5) have a 1M-token context window. A context window is how much text a model can read at once; Anthropic notes 1M tokens is roughly 555,000 words. Best for: long reports, careful writing and coding help.
Meta AI. Meta's assistant says it is free and available at meta.ai, in the Meta AI app and across Meta's apps, powered by Muse Spark (Meta, October 2026). Best for: quick answers inside apps you already use.
Microsoft Copilot. Microsoft's consumer assistant at copilot.microsoft.com. Best for: Windows users. Plan details were not confirmed.
Perplexity. An answer engine that shows sources with its answers. Best for: quick research where you want to click through and check. Plan details were not confirmed.
4. Image generation tools
Short answer: For artistic images, people use Midjourney; for images with readable text, Ideogram; for free, customisable open models, Stable Diffusion; and for editing inside a chat assistant, OpenAI's GPT-Image or Google's Nano Banana models.
- Midjourney: a popular text-to-image service known for striking, stylised images. Best for: concept art, mood boards and social creatives. Plans not confirmed.
- GPT-Image (OpenAI): OpenAI's image models (GPT-Image-2.5 in October 2026) power image creation in ChatGPT and through the API. Best for: quick edits and images inside a chat.
- Nano Banana (Google): Google's image models in the Gemini line-up (Nano Banana 2.1, 2 and Pro listed in October 2026). Google's older Imagen 4 model is marked as shut down. Best for: creating and editing images in Gemini.
- Stable Diffusion (Stability AI): an open image-model family released publicly in August 2022. It is based on latent diffusion, which runs the diffusion process in a compressed space so it needs less computing power. Best for: developers and designers who want control, local use or fine-tuning.
- Ideogram: a text-to-image tool. Its docs say there is a free plan, and that signing in with Google, Apple or Microsoft gives free weekly credits (Ideogram, October 2026). Best for: posters, thumbnails and designs with words in them.
- Adobe Firefly: Adobe's AI creative studio for images, video and audio. Best for: designers who already use Photoshop and other Adobe apps.
- Canva Magic Studio: Canva's AI features for designs and presentations. Best for: quick social media posts and slides.
Tip for Indian marketers: when you need Hindi, Telugu or Tamil text on an image, generate the image without text first, then add the text in a design tool. Image models can misspell non-English scripts.
5. Video generation tools
Short answer: For text-to-video, look at Google Veo, Runway and Pika; for talking-avatar videos used in training and marketing, look at Synthesia and HeyGen. Sora is no longer available as an API.
- Google Veo: Google DeepMind's video model; its official page is titled "Veo 3.1" (October 2026). Google's model list also includes a video model called Gemini Omni Flash. Best for: realistic short clips from a text prompt.
- Runway: an AI video studio. Its pricing page lists a Free plan with a one-time deposit of 125 credits (Runway, October 2026). Best for: creators testing ideas.
- Pika: AI video for short clips; the Free plan gives no monthly credits, so you buy credit packs, and Starter costs $10 (Pika, October 2026).
- Synthesia: turns a script into a video with an AI presenter. It has a free basic plan. Best for: HR, L&D and product explainers in companies.
- HeyGen: AI avatar videos; you can try it free with up to 3 videos a month and no credit card (HeyGen, October 2026). Best for: marketing and sales videos.
What about Sora? OpenAI's developer guide says the Sora 2 models and the Videos API were shut down on 24 September 2026, with no one-to-one replacement API (OpenAI developer docs, October 2026). We have not listed Sora as an available tool.
6. Audio, voice and music tools
Short answer: ElevenLabs is the go-to tool for AI voices and voiceovers, and Suno is the best-known AI music generator; both list free plans in October 2026.
- ElevenLabs: text to speech, speech to text and voice agents. Its pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 a month. Best for: YouTube voiceovers, audiobooks, IVR prompts and demos.
- Suno: creates songs and background music from a text description. Free plan at $0 a month, plus Pro and Premier plans (Suno, October 2026). Best for: reels, jingles and practice.
- Lyria (Google): Google's music model (Lyria 3.5 in the Gemini API model list, October 2026). Best for: developers adding music generation to apps.
- Voxtral (Mistral): Mistral's speech models. Best for: developers who need speech features from an open-weight provider.
- Sarvam AI: for Indian languages, Sarvam offers text to speech in 11 Indic languages and speech to text in 12 (more in the Indian tools section).
A word of care: cloning a real person's voice without consent can break platform rules and may be illegal. Use your own voice or a stock AI voice.
7. AI coding assistants
Short answer: GitHub Copilot and Cursor are the most popular coding assistants and both have free plans; Claude Code is a strong agentic option for the terminal; Amazon Q Developer users should plan a move to Kiro before IDE plugin support ends on 30 April 2027.
- GitHub Copilot: an AI coding agent inside your IDE and on GitHub. GitHub's Copilot page and pricing FAQ describe a Copilot Free plan you can upgrade to Pro (GitHub, October 2026). In a controlled GitHub study, developers using Copilot finished one test coding task 55% faster (1 hour 11 minutes against 2 hours 41 minutes), though the result came from a single task with a wide margin of error.
- Cursor: an AI code editor that also works as a coding agent. Its pricing page says it is free for individuals ($0 a month with limited AI usage).
- Claude Code: Anthropic's agentic coding tool. An agent is an AI that plans steps and uses tools, such as running commands or editing files, to finish a task, not just answer one question.
- Gemini Code Assist: Google's coding assistant. Google Cloud's docs now say new Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise subscriptions are no longer available for purchase. Whether the free individual edition continues was not confirmed.
- Amazon Q Developer: AWS's assistant for software development in the IDE, CLI and console, with a perpetual free tier of 50 agentic chat interactions a month. AWS says it will discontinue support for the Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins on 30 April 2027 and suggests Kiro (AWS, October 2026).
- Codestral (Mistral): Mistral's code model, useful for developers building their own coding tools.
For testers: these assistants can draft unit tests, test data and automation scripts. Treat their tests like a junior colleague's work: review every assertion before you commit. Some companies only allow approved assistants. A JPMorganChase LLM engineer listing seen on 24 October 2026 asked for the use of "enterprise-authorised" AI coding assistants.
8. Presentation, design and research tools
Short answer: For slides and social designs, Canva and Adobe Firefly are common choices; for research, use Perplexity for cited web answers and Google's NotebookLM (now titled Gemini Notebook on its site) to question your own documents.
Presentation and design. Most people now combine two tools: a chat assistant writes the outline and speaker notes, and a design tool lays out the slides. For example, ask Gemini or Claude for a 10-slide outline, then build the deck in Canva or PowerPoint, and create images with Ideogram, Nano Banana or Firefly.
Research and study.
- Perplexity: answers questions with links to sources, so you can verify claims.
- NotebookLM / Gemini Notebook (Google): Google's research notebook. Its official site was titled "Gemini Notebook" on 24 October 2026 and describes it as an AI research tool that analyses your sources. Best for: students revising from their own notes, and analysts reading long reports.
- Gemini and Claude: both handle very long inputs (Gemini 4 and current Claude models list 1M-token context windows), which helps when you summarise a long report.
Here is a research prompt you can adapt (simplified example):
You are my study assistant. Use ONLY the attached PDF.
1. Summarise chapter 3 in 8 bullet points.
2. List 5 exam questions with short answers.
3. If something is not in the PDF, say "not in source".
The last line matters. Asking the tool to stick to your source reduces made-up answers. Grounding a model in retrieved documents like this is the idea behind RAG (retrieval-augmented generation), which developers build into apps, as the next section explains.
9. Developer frameworks, APIs and platforms
Short answer: To build your own GenAI apps, you need a model API (OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek or Mistral), a framework (LangChain or LlamaIndex), a place to find open models (Hugging Face), a way to run models locally (Ollama) and, for companies, a cloud platform (Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Amazon Bedrock or Microsoft Foundry).
This is the stack employers ask about. On 24 October 2026, Naukri showed about 7,585 results for "rag" and 4,323 for "langchain" across India. These are keyword-match counts, not a number of open jobs, but they show how often these skills appear in listings.
Model APIs. OpenAI's developer platform (GPT-6 family), Google's Gemini API (Gemini 4 and Flash models), Anthropic's Claude Platform (Opus, Sonnet and Haiku 5.5) and Mistral (Mistral Large 4, Medium 3.5) are the main options. DeepSeek's API serves its V4.x models and is compatible with the OpenAI and Anthropic SDK formats, so switching is easy.
Open-weight models. Open-weight means you can download the model's trained weights. Mistral releases several models under the Apache 2.0 licence, including Mistral Small 4, Mistral Large 3 and Ministral 3. Meta's developer site now leads with the Muse family, including an open-weight Muse Spark Open and Muse Glimmer for local agents on Hugging Face.
Hugging Face. Hugging Face is the main hub for open models, datasets and Spaces (small demo apps), and its pricing page shows free "CPU Basic" hardware for Spaces (Hugging Face, October 2026). Its PEFT library supports LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation), a fine-tuning method that trains a small set of extra parameters instead of the whole model. Fine-tuning means further training a model on your own examples.
LangChain. An open-source framework for LLM apps and agents. Its tracing and evaluation tool, LangSmith, has a $0 single seat with up to 5,000 base traces a month (LangChain, October 2026). In 12 GenAI job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026, LangChain appeared in 8.
LlamaIndex. A framework for building agents over documents, including OCR and workflows. A good fit when your app is mostly "chat with our documents".
Ollama. Runs open models locally and in the cloud. Local models keep data on your machine, which helps with privacy while you learn. Bigger models need more memory and a stronger computer, so start with small ones.
Cloud platforms. Companies usually build on a cloud platform for security and scale:
- Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI): on 22 April 2026, Vertex AI became part of this platform, and Vertex AI Studio became Agent Studio (Google Cloud release notes, October 2026).
- Amazon Bedrock: AWS's service to build GenAI apps and agents with foundation models.
- Microsoft Foundry (formerly Azure AI Foundry): Microsoft's AI app and agent platform, which includes Azure OpenAI.

10. Vector databases
Short answer: A vector database stores embeddings so an app can find text by meaning; the common choices are Pinecone, Weaviate, Chroma, pgvector and FAISS, and all five have a free or open-source option.
An embedding is a list of numbers that represents the meaning of a piece of content; similar meanings give nearby numbers. RAG apps turn documents into embeddings, store them in a vector database, find the closest matches to a user's question and pass them to the LLM as context. That is how a "chat with our HR policy" bot answers from your company's documents instead of guessing.
How to choose: start with Chroma or FAISS on your laptop while learning. Use pgvector if your company already runs PostgreSQL. Move to Pinecone or Weaviate when you need a managed service. Job listings seen on 24 October 2026 named FAISS, Pinecone, Chroma, pgvector, Weaviate and Azure AI Search, so knowing one well and the idea behind all of them is enough to start.
11. Indian generative AI tools
Short answer: The main Indian GenAI platforms are Sarvam AI (Indian-language voice, translation and documents), Krutrim (Ola's AI cloud with data kept in India), BharatGen (foundation models for 22+ Indian languages) and the government's Bhashini.
- Sarvam AI: calls itself India's full-stack sovereign AI platform. Its site lists APIs for text to speech in 11 Indic languages, speech to text in 12 and translation across 23 languages, with models such as Bulbul V4 Flash, Saaras V4 and Sarvam Vision 2.1 (Sarvam AI, October 2026). Best for: apps for Indian users, call centres and documents in regional languages.
- Krutrim: describes itself as India's AI-first cloud platform, keeps data in India and lets you sign up without a credit card (Krutrim, October 2026). Best for: Indian startups and teams that need data residency.
- BharatGen: India's sovereign GenAI initiative, building foundation models for 22+ Indian languages. Its site headlines say it secured ₹988.6 crore under the IndiaAI Mission and that "BharatGen Param 2" was unveiled at the AI Impact Summit 2026.
- Bhashini: the government's Indian-language AI initiative. Its website did not respond to our checks, so confirm features on the site.
These sit inside a larger push. The Union Cabinet approved the IndiaAI Mission with an outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore, including compute, datasets and indigenous foundation models (PIB, 7 March 2024).
12. Free generative AI tools (as of October 2026)
Short answer: You can do almost every GenAI task free: Gemini, Claude or Meta AI for chat, Ideogram for images, Runway or HeyGen for video, ElevenLabs and Suno for audio, GitHub Copilot or Cursor for code, and Hugging Face, LangChain, Ollama, Chroma and FAISS for building.
Free plans are great for learning. For client work, check the terms: free tiers may use your inputs differently from business plans, and limits can block you in the middle of a deadline.
13. How to choose a generative AI tool
Short answer: Choose by five checks in this order: the task, privacy, cost, language support and availability in India.
- Task first. Write the job in one line: "turn meeting notes into minutes", "make a 30-second product reel", "add a chatbot to our site". Then pick the category from the table above.
- Privacy. Ask what happens to your data. Is the tool approved by your company? Does a business plan exclude your data from training? For sensitive data, consider local models through Ollama or your company's cloud platform.
- Cost. Start free. Compare monthly plans in rupees where shown, such as Google AI Pro at ₹399 a month. For APIs, cost depends on tokens used, so test with small volumes first.
- Language support. If your users speak Hindi, Telugu, Tamil or other Indian languages, test the tool in those languages. For voice and translation, look at Indian platforms such as Sarvam AI.
- India availability and payment. Some tools price in US dollars and may need an international card. Check that sign-up, payment and data storage work for you in India.
Then run a one-week trial: give two tools the same three real tasks and keep the one whose output needs the fewest fixes.
14. Best generative AI tools by role
Short answer: Students need one chat assistant and one research tool; developers need a coding assistant plus the API, framework and vector database stack; marketers and designers need image, video and voice tools; analysts need a chat assistant that handles files plus a research notebook.
AI tools for students. Use a chat assistant to explain topics in simple words, quiz you and review your code, but write your own answers for assignments. Use NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) to revise from your own notes. If you are new to all this, our generative AI for beginners guide gives you a first-week plan.
Generative AI tools for developers. Job listings show what employers expect. Across 12 GenAI job descriptions we read on 24 October 2026, Python and LLM APIs appeared in all, RAG in 11 and LangChain in 8, with vector databases such as FAISS, Pinecone and Chroma common. A 0 to 2 years listing posted through Jobaaj.com for a client asked for LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Hugging Face), LangChain or LlamaIndex, and vector databases such as Pinecone, FAISS, ChromaDB or Weaviate. A Crisil Generative AI intern listing asked for OpenAI APIs and Hugging Face (listings seen on 24 October 2026).
Testers. Use assistants to draft test cases and data, and learn how GenAI apps are tested: checking answers for groundedness (is it supported by the source?) and hallucination. TCS and JPMorganChase listings seen on 24 October 2026 named this kind of evaluation work.
Marketers and designers. Draft copy in a chat assistant, create visuals in Ideogram or Canva, and turn scripts into avatar videos with HeyGen or Synthesia. For real-world campaigns and outputs, browse our 25 generative AI examples.
Analysts. Upload a CSV or report to a chat assistant and ask for a summary, an Excel formula or a chart idea, then verify every number yourself. For how companies use these tools by industry, see generative AI applications.
15. Safe-use checklist for generative AI tools at work
Short answer: Use only approved tools, never paste personal or confidential data, check every fact and number, label AI-made content where required, and keep a human responsible for the final output.
NIST's Generative AI Profile lists 12 risks of generative AI, including confabulation (hallucination) and data privacy (NIST AI 600-1, July 2024). In India, MeitY released the India AI Governance Guidelines with seven guiding principles in November 2025 (PIB, 5 November 2025). Turn that guidance into daily habits:
- Use approved tools only. Ask IT which tools and plans are allowed. Personal free accounts are usually not.
- No personal or confidential data. Do not paste Aadhaar or PAN numbers, customer details, salary data, source code under NDA or client documents into public tools.
- Check facts, figures and links. Treat every answer as a draft. Ask for sources and open them.
- Review code before you run it. AI code can contain bugs, insecure patterns or made-up libraries.
- Respect copyright and likeness. Do not copy a living artist's style for commercial work without care, and never clone a real voice or face without consent.
- Label AI content when your company, client or platform requires it.
- Watch for prompt injection. If you build apps, hidden text in documents or web pages can try to trick the model. A Wells Fargo GenAI listing seen on 24 October 2026 listed prompt-injection defences and the OWASP LLM Top 10 among desired skills.
- Keep a human in charge. A person signs off on anything sent to customers, regulators or the public.

Is ChatGPT a generative AI tool?
Yes, ChatGPT is a generative AI tool. It uses OpenAI's large language models, the GPT-6 family in October 2026, to generate new text from your prompts, and it can also create images with OpenAI's GPT-Image models. OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, and it remains one of the most widely used chat assistants for writing, learning and brainstorming.
What is the best generative AI tool for video creation?
For text-to-video, Google Veo and Runway are leading choices, with Pika for short creative clips. For talking-avatar videos used in training and marketing, Synthesia and HeyGen are popular. Runway offers a free plan with a one-time 125 credits, and HeyGen lets you try up to 3 videos a month free. The Sora 2 API was shut down in September 2026.
What is the best generative AI tool for image generation?
Midjourney is popular for artistic images, Ideogram is good for images with readable text, and Stable Diffusion is the best choice if you want open models you can run and customise. Inside chat assistants, OpenAI's GPT-Image models and Google's Nano Banana models create and edit images. Ideogram has a free plan with free weekly credits for some sign-ins.
Which generative AI tool is best for coding?
GitHub Copilot and Cursor are the most popular coding assistants, and both have free plans. Claude Code suits developers who want an agent that works in the terminal and IDE. Amazon Q Developer has a free tier, but AWS will end support for its IDE plugins on 30 April 2027 and points users to Kiro. Always review AI-written code before running it.
Which AI tools are best for students?
Students should start with one chat assistant, such as Gemini or Claude, to explain topics and quiz them, plus NotebookLM, now titled Gemini Notebook on its site, to revise from their own notes. Engineering students can add GitHub Copilot Free and Hugging Face. Use the tools to learn and check your work, and write your own assignment answers.
How do generative AI tools work?
Generative AI tools work in four steps. You give a prompt, the tool sends it to a trained model such as GPT, Gemini, Claude or Stable Diffusion, the model generates new content, and you review and refine the output. Text tools predict the next token, while image and video tools usually use diffusion, turning random noise into a picture step by step.
What are generative AI tools based on?
Generative AI tools are based on foundation models, which are large models trained on broad data that can be adapted to many tasks. Text tools use large language models built on the transformer architecture. Image and video tools mostly use diffusion models. Some apps also connect the model to your documents through retrieval, a method called RAG.
What is the difference between generative AI tools and other AI tools?
Generative AI tools create new content, such as an email, image or piece of code, while other AI tools mainly classify, predict or recommend. A spam filter, a fraud score or a product recommendation engine is AI, but it does not generate new content. ChatGPT, Midjourney and Suno are generative because they produce something that did not exist before.
Do generative AI tools understand what they generate?
Not in the human sense. Generative AI tools produce output by predicting likely patterns from their training data, so they can sound confident while being wrong. NIST calls this confabulation, commonly known as hallucination, and lists it among 12 risks of generative AI. That is why you should check every fact, figure and link before you rely on an answer.
Are generative AI tools safe to use with personal data?
Generative AI tools are not safe for personal or confidential data unless your employer has approved the tool and plan. Never paste Aadhaar or PAN numbers, customer details, salary data or client documents into a public tool. For sensitive work, use approved business tools, your company's cloud platform or local models through Ollama, and keep a human responsible for the output.
Which Indian generative AI tools are available?
The main Indian generative AI platforms are Sarvam AI, Krutrim, BharatGen and Bhashini. Sarvam offers Indian-language speech, translation and document tools. Krutrim, from the Ola Group, is an AI cloud that keeps data in India. BharatGen builds foundation models for 22 or more Indian languages under the IndiaAI Mission. Bhashini is the government's Indian-language AI initiative.
How many generative AI tools are there?
There is no official count of generative AI tools, and new ones appear constantly. This guide lists more than 45 that matter in October 2026, across chat, image, video, audio, code, research, developer frameworks, vector databases and Indian platforms. Learning one strong tool per category is more useful than trying them all.
Which generative AI tools do companies expect freshers to know?
Companies mostly expect GenAI freshers to know Python, LLM APIs, LangChain or LlamaIndex, RAG and a vector database. A 0 to 2 years listing seen in October 2026 asked for OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and Hugging Face APIs, plus Pinecone, FAISS, ChromaDB or Weaviate. A Crisil intern listing asked for OpenAI APIs and Hugging Face. Show these skills through small projects.
What generative AI tools should developers learn?
Developers should learn a coding assistant such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor, at least one model API from OpenAI, Gemini or Claude, a framework such as LangChain or LlamaIndex, Hugging Face for open models, Ollama for local models, and a vector database such as Chroma, FAISS or Pinecone. For company projects, add one cloud platform: Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry or Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
Is Sora still available?
The Sora 2 API is no longer available. OpenAI's developer documentation says the Sora 2 models and the Videos API were shut down on 24 September 2026, with no one-to-one replacement API. For video generation, consider Google Veo, Runway or Pika, or Synthesia and HeyGen if you need avatar-style business videos.
What happened to Vertex AI?
Vertex AI became part of Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on 22 April 2026, according to Google Cloud's release notes. Vertex AI Studio was renamed Agent Studio. The platform is still Google Cloud's main service for building enterprise generative AI apps and agents, so older tutorials that say Vertex AI now map to the new names.
Is Gemini Code Assist still available?
Google Cloud's documentation says new Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise subscriptions are no longer available for purchase, as of October 2026. We could not confirm whether the free individual edition continues. If you are choosing a coding assistant today, compare GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code, which are actively offered.
What is a vector database and do I need one?
A vector database stores embeddings, which are lists of numbers that capture the meaning of content, so an app can search by meaning. You need one if you build RAG apps, such as a chatbot that answers from company documents. Beginners can start with Chroma or FAISS for free, while Pinecone and Weaviate offer free cloud tiers.
Can I run generative AI tools on my own laptop?
Yes, you can run open models on your own laptop with Ollama, and run Stable Diffusion locally for images. Open-weight models from Mistral, Meta's Muse family and others on Hugging Face can be downloaded. Local models keep your data on your machine, which helps privacy, but larger models need a powerful computer with enough memory.
Which generative AI tools support Indian languages?
Sarvam AI is the strongest choice for Indian languages, with text to speech in 11 Indic languages, speech to text in 12 and translation across 23 languages. BharatGen builds foundation models for 22 or more Indian languages, and Bhashini is the government's Indian-language AI initiative. Whatever tool you pick, test the output in your users' language before you use it in a real product.
Is Gemini free in India?
Yes, Gemini has a free tier in India. Google's India subscriptions page in October 2026 showed a "Free of charge" option and Google AI Pro at ₹399 a month as the paid plan. The page advertised Gemini 4 Argon as its model. Check the page for current limits, because plans and offers change often.
