CBAP certification 2026: eligibility, exam, fees and prep, Brolly Academy

Quick answer

CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) is the senior certification from IIBA for business analysts with at least 7,500 hours, about five years, of business analysis work in the last 10 years, and it is earned by passing a 120-question, 210-minute case-study exam (IIBA, October 2026). It suits experienced BAs who want to prove they can lead analysis work, not freshers. The official cost is a $145 application fee plus a $350 exam fee for IIBA members or $505 for non-members.

  • Eligibility: 7,500 hours of BA work in the last 10 years, 35 professional development hours in the last 4 years, and 2 professional references
  • Exam: 120 case-study and scenario-based multiple-choice questions in 210 minutes, online with a proctor or at a PSI test centre
  • Cost: $495 (member) or $650 (non-member) for application plus exam, roughly ₹47,000 to ₹62,000 at an approximate rate of ₹95 per US dollar
  • Renewal: 60 Continuing Development Units (CDUs) every 3 years, plus a recertification fee
  • Study base: the BABOK Guide version 3, with its 6 knowledge areas

Key takeaways

  1. CBAP is for experienced BAs. If you have less than five years of business analysis work, look at ECBA or CCBA first.
  2. The exam tests judgement, not memory. Every question sits inside a case or scenario, so you must apply BABOK ideas to real situations.
  3. Plan your budget in dollars. IIBA charges in US dollars, so your rupee cost moves with the exchange rate.
  4. Your application has a clock. IIBA says your application expires within 12 months of purchase, so book the exam inside that window.
  5. CBAP is a career signal, not a job guarantee. It helps most when you already have solid project experience to talk about in interviews.

1. What is CBAP certification?

Short answer: CBAP stands for Certified Business Analysis Professional. It is the most senior of IIBA's three core business analysis certifications, above ECBA (entry level) and CCBA (mid level). It shows that you have years of real BA experience and can apply the BABOK Guide to complex work.

IIBA, the International Institute of Business Analysis, is the global professional body for business analysts. It publishes the BABOK Guide, which is the standard reference for how business analysis is done, and it runs the certification exams.

CBAP is aimed at people who already do business analysis as their main job. Think of senior business analysts, lead BAs, business systems analysts, product analysts who own requirements, and consultants who run discovery workshops. The credential tells an employer three things:

  • You have at least five years of hands-on business analysis experience.
  • You understand the full BABOK framework, not just the parts your current project uses.
  • You can make sound decisions in messy, real-world situations.

If you are still deciding which IIBA level fits you, our guide to business analyst certification compares every option in one place. This article goes deep on CBAP only.

CBAP is not a good fit if you are a fresher or a career switcher with little BA work history, because you will not meet the hours requirement yet. Start with skills and an entry-level path, which our post on how to become a business analyst explains step by step.

2. CBAP eligibility requirements

Short answer: To apply for CBAP you need 7,500 hours (five or more years) of business analysis work experience in the last 10 years, 35 professional development hours in the last four years, and two professional references (IIBA, October 2026).

Here is each requirement in plain terms, based on the official IIBA CBAP page (October 2026).

Requirement What IIBA asks for What it means for you Work experience 7,500 hours of BA work in the last 10 years About five years of full-time business analysis work Professional development 35 hours in the last 4 years Training, courses or workshops on business analysis topics References 2 professional references People who can confirm your BA work

Work experience: what counts

The hours must be business analysis work. That means tasks such as planning analysis work, eliciting requirements, running workshops, modelling processes, analysing and prioritising requirements, defining solutions and evaluating whether a solution delivers value. Your job title does not need to say "business analyst". A developer, tester, product owner or project coordinator who did real analysis work can count those hours. What matters is the work, not the label.

A simple way to check yourself: list your projects for the last 10 years. For each one, write down the months you spent and the BA tasks you did. If the total is around five years of full-time analysis work, you are likely in range.

Professional development hours

You need 35 hours of professional development in the last four years. This usually comes from a structured business analysis course or CBAP exam preparation training. Keep your certificates and course outlines. You will need the course name, provider, dates and hours for your application.

References

You need two professional references. Pick people who have seen your BA work up close, such as a manager, a project lead or a client. Tell them in advance so they respond quickly when IIBA contacts them.

3. CBAP exam format

Short answer: The CBAP exam is a computer-based test of 120 case-study and scenario-based multiple-choice questions, and you get 210 minutes to finish it. You can take it online with a remote proctor or at a PSI test centre (IIBA, October 2026).

Feature Detail (IIBA, October 2026) Number of questions 120 Question style Case-study and scenario-based multiple choice Duration 210 minutes (3.5 hours) Delivery Online with a proctor, or at a PSI test centre Study base BABOK Guide v3

What "case-study based" means

A case-study question gives you a short story about an organisation, a project and its stakeholders. Then it asks what you should do next, which technique fits best, or what the most likely problem is. Often two or three options look correct. Your job is to pick the best one according to BABOK thinking.

Here is a sample style of question (written by us, not from IIBA):

A retail bank wants to launch a new loan app. Stakeholders disagree on which features matter most, and the deadline is fixed. As the lead BA, what should you do first? The best answer would usually involve agreeing on a prioritisation approach with stakeholders, rather than jumping into detailed design.

That is why reading BABOK once is not enough. You must practise applying it.

Time management

210 minutes for 120 questions gives you about 1 minute 45 seconds per question. Case studies take longer to read, so aim to finish your first pass with at least 20 minutes left for flagged questions.

4. BABOK v3 knowledge areas you must know

Short answer: The CBAP exam is built on the BABOK Guide version 3, which IIBA released in April 2015 and which is still current. It has 6 knowledge areas, 5 perspectives, an underlying competency model and 50 techniques (IIBA, October 2026).

According to the IIBA BABOK page (October 2026), these are the six knowledge areas:

Knowledge area What it covers in simple words Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring Planning how you will do the analysis work, who you will involve and how you will track it Elicitation and Collaboration Drawing out information from stakeholders and confirming you understood it correctly Requirements Life Cycle Management Tracing, prioritising, maintaining and approving requirements from start to finish Strategy Analysis Understanding the current state, defining the future state and working out the change needed Requirements Analysis and Design Definition Modelling, specifying and verifying requirements, and shaping solution options Solution Evaluation Checking whether a delivered solution actually creates the expected value

Beyond the knowledge areas

Many candidates study only the knowledge areas and lose marks elsewhere. Make sure you also cover:

  • The 50 techniques. Know when to use each one, for example brainstorming, interviews, process modelling, use cases, MoSCoW prioritisation, SWOT and root cause analysis.
  • The underlying competencies. These are the soft and thinking skills a BA needs, such as analytical thinking, communication and interaction skills. Our post on business analyst skills explains how these show up in daily work.
  • The 5 perspectives. These describe how analysis changes in different contexts, such as Agile projects or business intelligence work.
  • Inputs, outputs and relationships. Questions often test which task produces which output and what feeds into the next task.

5. CBAP application process step by step

Short answer: You document your eligibility, submit your application with references and pay the fees, then book and pass the exam. IIBA says your application expires within 12 months of purchase, so plan your exam date early (IIBA, October 2026).

IIBA describes the path in three stages: apply, certify, then build on your success by recertifying every three years. In practice, the steps look like this.

  1. Create your IIBA account. Decide whether to become a member first. Members pay a lower exam fee.
  2. Gather your evidence. List your BA projects, dates, hours and tasks. Collect your professional development certificates.
  3. Line up two references. Get their consent and correct email addresses.
  4. Fill in the application. Enter your work experience, professional development hours and reference details carefully.
  5. Pay the application fee. This is $145 for CBAP.
  6. Wait for approval. IIBA reviews your application. Some applications are picked for audit, so keep proof ready.
  7. Pay the exam fee and schedule your exam. Choose online proctoring or a PSI test centre.
  8. Take the exam. Read each case slowly and pick the best answer, not just a correct one.

Tip: describe your tasks in BABOK language, for example "elicited requirements through workshops" instead of "attended meetings", and make sure overlapping project dates do not inflate your hours.

6. CBAP certification fees in 2026

Short answer: CBAP costs a $145 application fee plus an exam fee of $350 for IIBA members or $505 for non-members. A rewrite costs $295 for members or $450 for non-members. IIBA says the first year of membership is included with the exam fee (IIBA, October 2026).

These are the official figures on the IIBA certification fees page (October 2026):

Fee IIBA member Non-member Application $145 $145 Exam $350 $505 Application plus exam $495 $650 Exam rewrite $295 $450 Recertification $85 $120

Member or non-member?

The exam is $155 cheaper for members. Membership has its own cost, so compare the membership fee on IIBA's site with this saving before you decide. Membership also gives you access to IIBA resources that help with preparation, so many candidates join before they apply.

7. CBAP cost in INR (estimate)

Short answer: At an approximate rate of ₹95 per US dollar, the CBAP application and exam together cost about ₹47,000 for IIBA members and about ₹62,000 for non-members. This is a conversion estimate, not an official rupee price.

IIBA charges in US dollars. The table below converts the official fees at an approximate rate of ₹95 per US dollar. The Wise currency converter showed a mid-market rate of about ₹94.5 per dollar when we checked on 22 October 2026, and we rounded up slightly to allow for movement.

Fee USD (IIBA) Approximate INR at ₹95 per $1 Application $145 about ₹13,800 Exam (member) $350 about ₹33,300 Exam (non-member) $505 about ₹48,000 Application plus exam (member) $495 about ₹47,000 Application plus exam (non-member) $650 about ₹61,800 Rewrite (member / non-member) $295 / $450 about ₹28,000 / ₹42,800 Recertification (member / non-member) $85 / $120 about ₹8,100 / ₹11,400

Please treat these numbers as estimates. Your final rupee amount depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay and any currency conversion charge your bank or card adds.

Other costs to plan for

The exam fee is not your only cost. Budget for:

  • Training for your 35 professional development hours, if you do not already have them.
  • Study material, such as the BABOK Guide and a question bank.
  • IIBA membership, if you choose the member route.
  • A possible rewrite, if you do not pass the first time.

8. CBAP recertification: CDUs and the 3-year cycle

Short answer: CBAP holders must earn at least 60 Continuing Development Units (CDUs) every three years from their date of certification, and pay the recertification fee of $85 for members or $120 for non-members (IIBA, October 2026).

The IIBA recertification page (October 2026) sets out these rules for CBAP:

Rule CBAP (IIBA, October 2026) CDUs needed At least 60 Cycle Every 3 years from your date of certification Grace period 1 year CDUs you can carry over Up to 20, only if earned in the 3rd year of the previous cycle Fee $85 members, $120 non-members

How to earn CDUs without stress

CDUs come from different types of activity, such as continued business analysis work, training, learning and giving back to the profession. IIBA's recertification handbook lists the categories and the maximum you can claim in each, so read it before you start logging. A few habits make renewal easy:

  • Log as you go, the week you finish each course or webinar.
  • Spread it out. Aim for about 20 CDUs a year instead of rushing in year three.
  • Keep proof in one folder in case you are audited.

9. A 10-week CBAP preparation plan

Short answer: Most working professionals need 8 to 12 weeks of steady study. A practical plan is 10 weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week: read BABOK by knowledge area, learn the techniques, then spend the last weeks on case-study practice and full mock exams.

This plan assumes you work full time and study on weekday evenings and weekends.

Week Focus Goal for the week 1 BABOK structure, key concepts, Business Analysis Core Concept Model Understand how the guide fits together 2 Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring Know every task, input and output 3 Elicitation and Collaboration Link each task to real workshops you ran 4 Requirements Life Cycle Management Practise tracing and prioritising 5 Strategy Analysis Current state, future state, risk and change strategy 6 Requirements Analysis and Design Definition Modelling, specifying and design options 7 Solution Evaluation, perspectives and underlying competencies Close the gaps people often skip 8 The 50 techniques Know when to use each one, not just its name 9 Case-study question practice by knowledge area Score above your target on each area 10 Two full timed mock exams and revision of weak areas Build stamina for 210 minutes

How to study each week

  • Read, then map. After each chapter, map the tasks to a project you have worked on.
  • Make one-page summaries of each knowledge area's tasks, inputs, outputs and techniques.
  • Practise in small batches of 20 to 30 scenario questions and review every wrong answer.
  • Simulate the real exam with full mocks in one sitting.

If you have less time

If you can only manage 8 weeks, merge weeks 1 and 2, and study the techniques alongside each knowledge area instead of in a separate week. If you want a slower pace, stretch the plan to 12 weeks and add an extra week of mixed practice before your final mocks.

10. Best study resources for CBAP

Short answer: Your core resource is the BABOK Guide v3. Add IIBA's free sample questions, a good question bank with case-study questions, and a structured course for your 35 professional development hours.

Core resources

  • BABOK Guide v3. The exam is built on it. Read it fully at least once and use it as your reference.
  • IIBA sample questions. The CBAP page offers sample multiple-choice questions so you can see the official style.
  • IIBA certification handbook. It explains the rules for applying and sitting the exam. Read it before you apply.
  • The recertification handbook. Useful later, so you know how to earn CDUs once you pass.

Practice and support

  • Case-study question banks that explain why each wrong option is wrong.
  • Study groups, such as local IIBA chapters and online BA communities.
  • Flashcards for the 50 techniques, reviewed a little every day.
  • A structured course that covers your professional development hours and gives you a guided pace.

Avoid memorising answers from dumps. The real exam uses scenarios, so only understanding helps.

11. CBAP vs CCBA vs ECBA vs PMI-PBA

Short answer: ECBA is for beginners with no experience requirement, CCBA is for BAs with 3,750 hours (2 to 3 years) of experience, and CBAP is for senior BAs with 7,500 hours (5+ years). PMI-PBA is a separate business analysis certification from PMI. We could not confirm its 2026 details on pmi.org, so check PMI's site directly.

Feature ECBA CCBA CBAP PMI-PBA Level Entry Mid Senior Check pmi.org BA work experience Not required 3,750 hours in last 7 years 7,500 hours in last 10 years Check pmi.org Exam See IIBA ECBA page 130 questions, 180 minutes 120 questions, 210 minutes Check pmi.org Application + exam fee $395 exam, no application fee $145 + $250 member / $405 non-member $145 + $350 member / $505 non-member Check pmi.org Renewal See IIBA Every 3 years 60 CDUs every 3 years Check pmi.org

IIBA facts are from the IIBA CBAP, IIBA CCBA and certification fees pages (October 2026). CCBA also needs 21 professional development hours in the last four years.

Which one should you choose?

  • 0 to 2 years of BA work: ECBA. It proves you know BABOK basics and helps you get noticed for junior roles.
  • 2 to 5 years of BA work: CCBA. It shows you can handle requirements on real projects.
  • 5+ years of BA work: CBAP. It positions you for lead, manager and consulting roles.
  • Working mainly in a project management environment: look at PMI's offering, but confirm its current status, eligibility and fee on pmi.org before you plan.

You do not have to collect every level. Many experienced BAs go straight to CBAP once they meet the hours.

12. Is CBAP worth it in India?

Short answer: CBAP is worth it if you already have five or more years of BA experience and want to move into senior, lead or consulting roles. It costs roughly ₹47,000 to ₹62,000 for the application and exam at an approximate conversion rate, and the benefit comes from better roles, credibility with clients and a structured way of working.

The case for CBAP

  • It proves experience. The 7,500-hour requirement tells employers you have done the work.
  • It gives you a shared language with global clients and teams.
  • It helps in senior interviews, where you can explain your approach using a recognised framework.

What the salary data says

AmbitionBox shows a typical business analyst salary of ₹9.7 to 10.7 lakh a year in India for people with 1 to 9 years of experience, with an average of about ₹10.2 lakh (updated 20 October 2026). For 9 to 12 years of experience, the average is about ₹14.4 lakh a year. AmbitionBox does not split these figures by certification, so we cannot say how much CBAP alone adds. Experience, domain and skills drive most of the difference. For a full breakdown by city, role and experience, read our business analyst salary in India guide.

When CBAP may not be worth it yet

  • You have less than five years of BA work. You cannot apply, so focus on ECBA or CCBA.
  • You want to move out of business analysis into a very different field.
  • Your budget is tight and your employer will not support the cost. In that case, build skills and projects first and plan CBAP for later.

Before you pay, ask your manager or HR whether your company's learning budget covers certification fees or training.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBAP certification?

CBAP stands for Certified Business Analysis Professional. It is the senior business analysis certification from IIBA, the International Institute of Business Analysis. It is meant for experienced business analysts with at least 7,500 hours of BA work in the last 10 years. You earn it by passing a 120-question, case-study based exam that tests how well you apply the BABOK Guide to real situations.

What is the full form of CBAP?

The full form of CBAP is Certified Business Analysis Professional. IIBA awards it to business analysts who meet the experience, professional development and reference requirements and then pass the CBAP exam. It sits above ECBA, the entry certification, and CCBA, the mid-level certification, in IIBA's core certification path.

What is the eligibility for CBAP certification?

You need 7,500 hours, which is about five years, of business analysis work experience in the last 10 years. You also need 35 hours of professional development in the last four years and two professional references. These requirements come from the official IIBA CBAP page as of October 2026. Your job title does not need to say business analyst if the work was real analysis.

Can a fresher do CBAP certification?

No, a fresher cannot apply for CBAP because it requires 7,500 hours of business analysis work in the last 10 years. Freshers should first build core BA skills and projects, then consider ECBA, which has no experience requirement. After gaining a few years of real BA work, you can move up to CCBA and later to CBAP when you meet the hours.

How much does CBAP certification cost?

CBAP costs a $145 application fee plus an exam fee of $350 for IIBA members or $505 for non-members, according to IIBA in October 2026. That makes $495 for members and $650 for non-members for application and exam together. IIBA says the first year of membership is included with the exam fee. A rewrite costs $295 for members or $450 for non-members.

What is the CBAP certification cost in INR?

At an approximate rate of ₹95 per US dollar, the CBAP application and exam cost about ₹47,000 for IIBA members and about ₹61,800 for non-members. This is a conversion estimate, not an official rupee price. IIBA charges in US dollars, so your final amount depends on the exchange rate on the day you pay and any conversion charge from your bank.

How many questions are in the CBAP exam?

The CBAP exam has 120 questions. All of them are case-study and scenario-based multiple-choice questions, according to IIBA in October 2026. Each question places you in a business situation and asks for the best action, technique or answer. Because several options can look correct, you need to apply BABOK thinking rather than recall definitions.

How long is the CBAP exam?

The CBAP exam lasts 210 minutes, which is three and a half hours. With 120 questions, that gives you about 1 minute and 45 seconds per question. Case studies take time to read, so aim to finish your first pass with around 20 minutes left to review flagged questions before you submit.

Can I take the CBAP exam online from India?

Yes. IIBA offers the CBAP exam online in a proctored format, and you can also choose to sit it at a PSI test centre. The online option lets you take the exam from home or office if your computer, internet connection and room meet the proctoring rules. Check the requirements well before your exam day.

Is the CBAP exam difficult?

The CBAP exam is considered challenging because every question is case-study or scenario based, and several options often look right. It tests judgement across all six BABOK knowledge areas, 50 techniques and the underlying competencies. With five years of real BA work and 8 to 12 weeks of focused study and practice, most prepared candidates find it manageable.

Which BABOK version is used for CBAP?

CBAP is based on the BABOK Guide version 3. IIBA released this version in April 2015 and it is still the current edition as of October 2026. It contains 6 knowledge areas, 5 perspectives, an underlying competency model and 50 techniques. Build your entire study plan around this version of the guide.

What are the six BABOK knowledge areas?

The six BABOK knowledge areas are Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring, Elicitation and Collaboration, Requirements Life Cycle Management, Strategy Analysis, Requirements Analysis and Design Definition, and Solution Evaluation. Together they describe the full range of work a business analyst does, from planning the analysis to checking whether a delivered solution creates value. The CBAP exam covers all six.

How many professional development hours do I need for CBAP?

You need 35 professional development hours completed in the last four years. These usually come from business analysis training or CBAP exam preparation courses. Keep your certificates and course details, because you will need to enter the course name, provider, dates and hours in your application. Some applications are audited, so proof matters.

How long is the CBAP application valid?

IIBA says your CBAP application expires within 12 months of purchase. That means you should plan your exam date early and book it with a comfortable buffer before the deadline. Start preparing before you apply, so that the 12-month window is spent on final revision and the exam rather than on starting from scratch.

How long does it take to prepare for CBAP?

Most working professionals need 8 to 12 weeks of steady study. A practical approach is about 8 to 10 hours a week over 10 weeks. Spend the first seven weeks on the knowledge areas and competencies, one week on the 50 techniques, and the last two weeks on case-study practice and full timed mock exams.

What are the best study resources for CBAP?

The BABOK Guide version 3 is the core resource because the exam is built on it. Add IIBA's free sample questions, the IIBA certification handbook, a question bank with case-study questions and clear explanations, and a structured course for your 35 professional development hours. Study groups and technique flashcards also help many candidates retain the material.

How many CDUs are needed for CBAP recertification?

You need at least 60 Continuing Development Units every three years from your date of certification to keep your CBAP, according to IIBA in October 2026. You can carry over up to 20 CDUs if they were earned in the third year of the previous cycle. IIBA's recertification handbook lists the categories and limits for claiming CDUs.

How often do I need to renew CBAP?

You need to renew CBAP every three years. Within each three-year cycle you must earn at least 60 CDUs and pay the recertification fee. If you miss the deadline, IIBA gives a one-year grace period to complete the process. Logging CDUs regularly, about 20 a year, keeps renewal simple and stress-free.

What is the CBAP recertification fee?

The CBAP recertification fee is $85 for IIBA members and $120 for non-members, according to the IIBA certification fees page in October 2026. At an approximate rate of ₹95 per US dollar, that is about ₹8,100 for members and about ₹11,400 for non-members. You pay it each time you recertify, every three years.

What happens if I fail the CBAP exam?

If you do not pass, you can take the exam again by paying the rewrite fee. IIBA lists the CBAP rewrite fee as $295 for members and $450 for non-members in October 2026. Review your weak knowledge areas, practise more case-study questions and take full timed mock exams before you book your next attempt.

What is the difference between CBAP and CCBA?

CCBA is IIBA's mid-level certification for BAs with 3,750 hours, about two to three years, of experience in the last seven years, and its exam has 130 questions in 180 minutes. CBAP is the senior level, needing 7,500 hours in the last 10 years, with 120 case-study questions in 210 minutes. CBAP signals deeper experience and leadership.

Should I do CBAP or ECBA?

Choose based on your experience. ECBA is for beginners and has no work experience requirement, so it suits freshers and career switchers. CBAP needs 7,500 hours, about five years, of BA work in the last 10 years. If you are new, start with ECBA. If you already have five or more years of analysis work, go for CBAP.

Is PMI-PBA better than CBAP?

PMI-PBA is a business analysis certification from PMI, while CBAP is from IIBA, the dedicated business analysis body. We could not confirm PMI-PBA's 2026 eligibility, fee or status on PMI's own website, so check pmi.org before comparing. If your work follows BABOK practices and you have five or more years of BA experience, CBAP is a natural choice.

Is CBAP worth it in India?

CBAP is worth it if you have five or more years of BA experience and want senior, lead or consulting roles. It costs roughly ₹47,000 to ₹62,000 for application and exam at an approximate conversion rate. AmbitionBox shows business analysts with 9 to 12 years of experience averaging about ₹14.4 lakh a year, though it does not split pay by certification.

Does Brolly Academy help with business analyst training before CBAP?

Yes. Brolly Academy offers a 3-month Business Analyst course with classroom training in Hyderabad and live online batches. It covers 16 modules, 6 capstone projects and tools such as SQL, Jira and Power BI, with placement assistance, resume building and mock interviews. IIBA exam fees, including CBAP fees, are paid separately to IIBA.
