Quick answer
A business analyst internship is a short, supervised role (usually 2 to 6 months) where you help a team collect requirements, document processes, analyse data and test solutions, so you gain real BA experience before your first full-time job. Any graduate or final-year student can apply, from B.Tech, BCA, B.Com, BBA, B.Sc or MBA backgrounds. Employers look for clear communication, Excel, basic SQL and the ability to write simple requirement documents. On AmbitionBox, business analyst interns with 0 to 1 year of experience report a typical ₹3.7–4.1 lakh a year on an annualised basis (October 2026), but stipends at small firms are often much lower.
- Who can apply: final-year students, recent graduates, MBA students and career switchers
- Core skills: communication, Excel, basic SQL, process diagrams, user stories and documentation
- Where to look: LinkedIn, Naukri, Internshala, company career pages, campus placement cells and the AICTE National Internship Portal
- How to stand out: one or two BA portfolio projects plus a short, specific cover note
- Biggest risk: fake internships that ask for a registration or training fee
Key takeaways
- You do not need prior experience or a coding background to land a BA internship, but you do need proof of skills, such as a small project.
- Most BA interns spend their time on meetings, notes, process maps, user stories, Excel or SQL analysis and test cases, not on strategy.
- Pay varies widely. Larger companies in AmbitionBox data pay annualised figures of ₹3.7–4.1 lakh a year at entry level, while many small firms pay modest stipends or nothing.
- The best way to get a pre-placement offer (PPO) is to own a small deliverable end to end and document it well.
- A real employer never asks you to pay for an internship. Any fee request is a red flag.
1. What is a business analyst internship?
Short answer: It is a temporary training role inside a company where you work under a senior business analyst or product team, learn how requirements move from a business problem to a working solution, and contribute to real deliverables.
A business analyst (BA) sits between the business side (sales, operations, finance, customers) and the delivery side (developers, testers, data teams). The BA asks the right questions, writes down what is needed, checks that everyone agrees and makes sure the final product solves the original problem.
As an intern, you do a smaller version of the same job. You will not lead a project, but you will sit in client calls, take notes, draft documents, update Jira tickets, clean data in Excel and help test features. The goal is simple: by the end, you should be able to say "I have worked on a real project" in your interviews.
Internships are especially useful in this field because most BA job descriptions ask for some experience. An internship is the fastest way to get that first line on your resume. If you want the full career picture first, read our guide on how to become a business analyst.
2. What does a business analyst intern do?
Short answer: A BA intern supports requirement gathering, documentation, process mapping, data analysis and testing. Most of the work is listening, writing and checking details.
Here are the tasks you are most likely to get, roughly in the order a project runs:
- Join stakeholder meetings and take clear minutes with decisions and action items.
- Draft requirement documents such as a section of a business requirements document (BRD) or functional requirements document (FRD).
- Write user stories in the format "As a [user], I want [goal], so that [benefit]", with acceptance criteria.
- Draw process maps of the current (AS-IS) and improved (TO-BE) process using tools like Visio, Lucidchart or draw.io.
- Analyse data in Excel or SQL to answer questions like "Where do customers drop off?"
- Build simple reports or dashboards in Power BI, Tableau or Excel.
- Maintain the backlog by updating Jira or Azure DevOps tickets.
- Prepare test cases and help with user acceptance testing (UAT).
- Do competitor or market research for a new feature.
A sample week for a BA intern
The exact mix depends on the company. An IT services firm will lean towards documents and testing. A startup may give you more data work. A consulting firm may ask for research and slides. If you would rather apply straight for entry-level roles such as junior BA or BA trainee, our business analyst jobs for freshers guide covers titles, hiring industries and how to get hired.
3. Who can apply: eligibility for students, freshers and career switchers
Short answer: Most BA internships are open to any graduate or final-year student. There is no fixed degree requirement. What matters is your communication, logical thinking and basic tool skills.
Students
Final-year and pre-final-year students from B.Tech, BCA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA and BA programmes can apply for summer or semester internships. Engineering and computer students find IT BA roles easier to enter. Commerce and management students often fit well into finance, operations and process roles.
MBA students
MBA students usually take a summer internship between the first and second year. Many companies hire MBA interns as business analysts, product analysts or strategy interns. These roles often expect stronger analysis and presentation skills.
Freshers
If you graduated recently and have not found a job, an internship is a good bridge. Many companies offer 3 to 6 month internships with a chance of conversion. Look for listings that mention "PPO" or "performance-based conversion".
Career switchers
People moving from testing, support, operations, sales or development can also take internships, although many skip straight to junior BA roles by highlighting their domain knowledge. A tester already understands test cases and defects. An operations executive already understands processes. Use that.
Common eligibility points in job listings
- Graduate or final-year student (any stream, though some roles prefer B.Tech, BCA or MBA)
- Good written and spoken English
- Comfort with Excel; SQL is a plus
- Availability for the full internship period
- A laptop and stable internet for remote roles
4. Skills you need before applying
Short answer: Communication, Excel, basic SQL, process mapping, requirement writing and one collaboration tool like Jira are enough to start. You do not need to code.
Soft skills matter as much as tools. Curiosity, asking "why" politely, taking ownership of small tasks and writing clear emails will be noticed quickly.
AI tools are also part of the job now. Many BAs use AI assistants to draft meeting summaries, first versions of user stories or test cases. Learn to use them, but always check the output. Your mentor will judge you on accuracy, not on speed alone.
5. Types of business analyst internships
Short answer: BA internships differ by focus (IT, data, product, process or consulting), by pay (paid, performance-based or unpaid) and by location (on-site, hybrid or remote). Choose based on the role you want after graduation.
By focus
Not sure whether you lean towards data or business analysis? A data-focused internship is still useful experience for a BA career, because SQL and reporting skills carry over.
Paid vs unpaid
- Paid internships give a fixed monthly stipend. Larger IT firms, product companies, banks and consulting firms usually pay.
- Performance-based stipends start low and increase or convert to a job offer if you perform well.
- Unpaid internships are common at very small startups and agencies. They can still be worth it if the work is real and you get a proper certificate and reference. Keep them short.
Remote vs on-site
Remote and work-from-home BA internships are now common, especially for documentation and data tasks. They save travel time but make it harder to learn by watching seniors. If you choose remote, ask for a fixed weekly check-in with your mentor and keep a written log of everything you deliver.
On-site and hybrid internships are better for learning stakeholder skills, because you see how meetings, negotiations and quick decisions really happen.
6. Business analyst internship stipend in India
Short answer: It depends heavily on the employer. On AmbitionBox, business analyst interns with 0 to 1 year of experience report a typical ₹3.7–4.1 lakh a year on an annualised basis, based on 845 salaries (updated 18 October 2026). Many small companies pay far less, and some pay nothing.
AmbitionBox shows a typical range of ₹4.7–5.1 lakh a year for the "Business Analyst Intern" title across 0 to 5 years of experience, with an average of about ₹4.9 lakh a year, or roughly ₹40,800 a month, based on about 1,300 salaries (AmbitionBox, October 2026). Read these figures carefully:
- They are self-reported and annualised, so a monthly stipend is shown as a yearly figure.
- They lean towards larger companies, where people are more likely to report pay.
- They include some people with more than a year of experience who still hold an intern title.
Source: AmbitionBox Business Analyst Intern salary page, updated 18 October 2026.
As a rough monthly view, our own conversion of the 0 to 1 year range (₹3.7–4.1 lakh a year divided by 12) works out to about ₹30,800–34,200 a month. Treat that as the upper part of the market. Internships at startups, small agencies and local firms often pay a few thousand rupees a month or offer an unpaid role with a certificate.
Your stipend matters less than what you learn and whether the internship can convert. Once you move into a full-time role, pay changes a lot by role and city.
7. Where to find business analyst internships
Short answer: Use a mix of job portals, LinkedIn, company career pages, campus placement cells, the AICTE portal and direct outreach. Do not rely on one source.
Job and internship portals
- LinkedIn Jobs: search "business analyst intern" or "BA intern", filter by "Internship" and "Past week". Turn on job alerts.
- Naukri: search "business analyst intern" and "business analyst trainee". Trainee roles are often open to freshers.
- Internshala: useful for startup internships, especially remote ones. Also search related titles like "business analytics", "product analyst" and "operations analyst".
- Indeed and Foundit: good for city-specific searches such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru or Pune.
- Unstop and Wellfound: Unstop lists competitions and internships from larger companies; Wellfound lists startup roles.
Government and college channels
The AICTE National Internship Portal is run under the Ministry of Education and lists internships for AICTE, UGC, IGNOU and other students. Registration is free, and the home page showed over 79 lakh internships from more than 83,000 companies (AICTE, October 2026). Search it for analyst, business and data roles.
Your college placement cell is still one of the best sources for summer and final-semester internships. Many larger firms only hire interns through campus drives.
Company programmes
Large IT services firms, global capability centres (GCCs), banks, consulting firms, Big 4 firms and product companies often run structured internship programmes. Check their career pages two to four months before your summer or final semester starts, because applications close early.
Direct outreach
Small startups often do not post every opening. Find founders, product managers or BA leads on LinkedIn, then send a short, specific message with one project link. Five thoughtful messages beat fifty copy-paste ones.
Hyderabad focus
Hyderabad has a large base of IT services firms, product companies and GCCs in areas like HITEC City, Madhapur, Gachibowli and the Financial District. Set your LinkedIn and Naukri alerts to Hyderabad and include hybrid roles, since many teams here work two or three days from the office.
8. How to apply for a business analyst internship: step by step
Short answer: Build basic skills, create one or two portfolio projects, write a one-page resume, apply to 5 to 10 well-matched roles a week with a tailored cover note, and prepare for a short case or SQL round.
- Pick a direction. Decide whether you want IT BA, data, product or process roles. This shapes your projects and keywords.
- Learn the basics. Cover requirement gathering, user stories, process mapping, Excel and basic SQL (see section 10).
- Build one or two projects. For example, a BRD and user stories for a food delivery app, or an AS-IS and TO-BE map for a college admission process. Our list of business analyst projects gives you ready ideas by level and domain.
- Write a one-page resume. Put projects and skills above hobbies. Use the words from the job description, such as "requirements", "user stories", "UAT", "SQL" and "Jira". Our business analyst resume guide has examples.
- Fix your LinkedIn profile. Use a headline like "Aspiring Business Analyst | SQL, Excel, Jira | Final-year BCA". Add your projects in the Featured section.
- Shortlist roles. Read each description. Apply where you match at least half the requirements.
- Send a tailored cover note. Use the template below and change it for each company.
- Prepare for interviews. Expect questions on the BA role, a short case ("How would you gather requirements for a new feature?"), basic SQL and your project. Practise with our list of business analyst interview questions.
- Follow up once. If you hear nothing in 7 to 10 days, send one polite follow-up.
- Track everything. Keep a simple sheet with company, role, date applied, contact and status.
Common interview questions for BA interns
- Tell me about yourself and why you want to be a business analyst.
- What is the difference between a BRD and an FRD?
- How would you write a user story for a "forgot password" feature?
- What is an AS-IS and TO-BE process?
- Write a SQL query to find the top five customers by order value.
- Walk me through your project. What would you do differently?
9. Cover note template for a business analyst internship
Short answer: Keep it under 150 words, name the role, mention one relevant project with a result, link your portfolio and ask for a conversation.
Here is a template you can adapt. Replace everything in square brackets.
Subject: Application for Business Analyst Intern, [Company Name]
Dear [Hiring Manager's Name],
I am a final-year [degree] student at [college], applying for the Business Analyst Intern role at [Company Name].
I recently completed a project where I [gathered requirements for an online pharmacy ordering flow, wrote a BRD with 12 user stories and mapped the AS-IS and TO-BE process]. I also used SQL and Excel to [analyse 5,000 sample orders and find the top three reasons for cancellations].
Your work on [product or domain, for example digital lending] interests me, and I would like to support your team with documentation, analysis and testing.
My portfolio: [link]. I am available from [date] for [duration], on-site or remote.
Thank you for your time. I would be glad to discuss how I can help.
Regards,

Short LinkedIn message for direct outreach
"Hi [Name], I am a final-year [degree] student learning business analysis. I built a BRD and process map for [project] (link). I saw your team works on [product]. Are you open to a BA intern for [duration]? Happy to share more. Thank you."
Change at least two lines for every company. Recruiters notice generic notes immediately.
10. What to learn before your business analyst internship
Short answer: In four to six weeks of steady study, you can cover the BA basics, Excel, SQL, process mapping, Agile and one or two tools well enough to apply confidently.
Should you get certified first?
You do not need a certification to get an internship. But if you want a structured foundation, IIBA's Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA) is described by IIBA as the first step for aspiring business analysis professionals. IIBA lists it at "$395 or less", which includes IIBA membership, the ECBA exam, a practice exam and its learning journey, with discounted student rates from $315 or less depending on region (IIBA, October 2026). Prices are in US dollars and can change. Projects and practical skills will usually matter more to an internship recruiter than a certificate.
11. How to turn your business analyst internship into a job
Short answer: Own one deliverable fully, communicate progress weekly, ask for feedback early, document everything you did, and tell your manager clearly that you want a full-time role.
Many companies use internships as a long interview. A pre-placement offer (PPO) goes to interns who make their manager's life easier. Here is how to be that intern:
- Clarify expectations in week one. Ask your mentor, "What would a great internship look like by the end?" Write down the answer.
- Own something end to end. Even a small piece, like the user stories for one module, shows you can be trusted.
- Send a weekly update. Three lines: what you did, what you are doing next, where you are blocked.
- Ask good questions. Prepare before meetings. Ask "why" to understand business goals, not only "what".
- Learn the domain. Read about the industry, the product and the customers. Domain knowledge is what separates a good BA from a note-taker.
- Keep a work log. Record every document, diagram, query and test you deliver. This becomes your resume content and your PPO case.
- Build relationships. Talk to developers, testers and business users, not only your manager.
- Ask directly. Around the midpoint, tell your manager you want to convert and ask what you need to show.
- Leave well. Hand over your work cleanly, ask for a LinkedIn recommendation and stay in touch.
If you do not get a PPO, your internship still counts as experience. Add it to your resume with specific results, for example "Wrote 25 user stories and 40 UAT test cases for a loan application module". Then use the same portfolio to target junior BA and trainee roles.
12. Red flags of fake business analyst internships
Short answer: If anyone asks you to pay for registration, training, a laptop, a certificate or a "security deposit", walk away. Real employers pay you, not the other way round.
Fake internships target students every placement season. Watch for these warning signs:
- Fee requests for registration, training, onboarding kits, background checks or certificates.
- Instant selection without an interview, or an offer for a role you never applied to.
- Contact only on WhatsApp or Telegram, with no official email domain, company website or LinkedIn presence.
- Payment to a personal UPI ID or QR code.
- Pressure to decide fast, such as "only two seats left, pay today".
- Vague work descriptions with no mentor, team or project named.
- Requests for sensitive data like Aadhaar, PAN, bank details or OTPs before a proper offer letter.
- "Internship with certificate" packages that are really paid courses dressed up as jobs.
- Unrealistic stipends for very little work.
How to verify an internship
- Check the company website and its careers page for the same role.
- Confirm the recruiter's email uses the company domain, not a free email address.
- Look up the company and recruiter on LinkedIn.
- Search the company name with words like "fraud" or "review".
- Ask for a written offer letter that names the role, duration, stipend and reporting manager.
If you lose money to an internship scam, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930, which the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs promotes for reporting cybercrime (I4C, October 2026), and file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Report quickly; the sooner you report, the better the chance your bank can act.

Frequently asked questions
What is a business analyst internship?
A business analyst internship is a short, supervised role, usually 2 to 6 months, where you help a team gather requirements, document processes, analyse data and test solutions. You work under a senior BA, product manager or project manager. It gives students and freshers real project experience, which most full-time business analyst job descriptions expect, and it can lead to a pre-placement offer.
What does a business analyst intern do?
A business analyst intern supports requirement gathering, documentation, process mapping, data analysis and testing. Typical tasks include taking meeting minutes, drafting parts of a BRD or FRD, writing user stories with acceptance criteria, drawing AS-IS and TO-BE process maps, pulling data with Excel or SQL, updating Jira tickets and preparing user acceptance test cases. Most of the work involves listening carefully, writing clearly and checking details.
Who is eligible for a business analyst internship?
Most business analyst internships are open to final-year students and recent graduates from any stream, including B.Tech, BCA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA and MBA. Some listings prefer technical or management degrees. Employers mainly look for good English communication, logical thinking, comfort with Excel and, ideally, basic SQL. Remote roles may also ask for your own laptop and a stable internet connection.
What are the requirements for a business analyst intern?
Common requirements are a graduate or final-year student background, strong written and spoken communication, Excel skills and an understanding of what a business analyst does. Basic SQL, a process mapping tool and familiarity with Jira are a plus. Many employers also want to see a small project, such as a sample BRD or user stories, and availability for the full internship period.
Which skills are required for a business analyst intern?
The key skills are communication, requirement writing, process mapping, Excel, basic SQL and one collaboration tool such as Jira or Azure DevOps. Knowing Power BI or Tableau helps, as does basic domain knowledge in areas like banking or e-commerce. Soft skills like curiosity, ownership and clear email writing matter as much as tools. You do not need to know how to code.
How much does a business analyst intern earn in India?
It varies widely by employer. On AmbitionBox, business analyst interns with 0 to 1 year of experience report a typical ₹3.7–4.1 lakh a year on an annualised basis, based on 845 salaries updated in October 2026. These figures lean towards larger companies. Many startups and small firms pay much lower monthly stipends, and some internships are unpaid.
What is the business analyst intern stipend in Hyderabad?
AmbitionBox shows a typical annualised range of ₹4.2–5.4 lakh a year for business analyst interns in Hyderabad, based on 89 salaries updated in October 2026. This reflects self-reported pay, mostly from larger employers. Stipends at smaller Hyderabad startups and firms are often lower. Compare the learning, mentorship and conversion chance, not only the stipend, before you accept an offer.
Are business analyst internships paid?
Many are paid, especially at larger IT firms, product companies, banks and consulting firms. Some startups offer a performance-based stipend that increases or converts to a job if you do well. Unpaid internships also exist, mainly at very small companies. An unpaid internship can still help if the work is real, but keep it short and make sure you get a certificate and reference.
Can I get a business analyst internship without experience?
Yes. Internships exist precisely for people without experience. What you need instead is proof of skills. Build one or two portfolio projects, such as a BRD with user stories for a sample app or a process map of a real process, and learn basic Excel and SQL. A clear resume, a tailored cover note and a confident project walkthrough can replace work experience at this stage.
Can non-IT students apply for business analyst internships?
Yes. B.Com, BBA, BA and MBA students regularly get business analyst internships, especially in finance, operations, process and consulting roles. You do not need coding skills. Focus on communication, Excel, basic SQL, process mapping and requirement writing, and choose projects in a domain you understand, such as banking or retail. Your business knowledge can be a strength, not a weakness.
Is a business analyst internship good for MBA students?
Yes. Many companies hire MBA students as business analyst, product analyst or strategy interns during the summer between the first and second year. These roles usually expect stronger analysis, structured problem solving and presentation skills than undergraduate internships. A strong summer BA internship often leads to a pre-placement offer, and it gives you specific project stories for final placement interviews.
Can I do a business analyst internship from home?
Yes. Remote and work-from-home business analyst internships are common, especially for documentation and data tasks. They save travel time but make it harder to learn by watching seniors. If you choose a remote role, ask for a fixed weekly check-in with your mentor, keep a written log of everything you deliver, and make sure the company and recruiter are genuine before you share any personal details.
How do I get a business analyst internship?
Learn the basics of business analysis, Excel and SQL, then build one or two portfolio projects. Write a one-page resume with job-description keywords, update your LinkedIn profile, and apply to 5 to 10 well-matched roles each week with a tailored cover note. Use LinkedIn, Naukri, Internshala, company career pages, your placement cell and the AICTE portal, and prepare for a short case or SQL round.
Where can I find business analyst internships in India?
Search LinkedIn Jobs, Naukri, Internshala, Indeed, Foundit, Unstop and Wellfound using titles like business analyst intern, BA trainee and product analyst intern. Check career pages of IT firms, global capability centres, banks and consulting firms early. Use your college placement cell and the free AICTE National Internship Portal, and contact startup founders or BA leads directly on LinkedIn with a project link.
How long is a business analyst internship?
Most business analyst internships in India last 2 to 6 months. Summer internships for students are often around 2 months, while final-semester and fresher internships often run for 6 months and may include a chance of conversion. Some startups offer shorter 1 to 3 month projects. Check the duration and your availability carefully, because leaving early can hurt your reference.
Do I need a certification to get a business analyst internship?
No. Recruiters for internships care more about projects and practical skills than certificates. If you want a structured foundation, IIBA's ECBA is aimed at people starting out. IIBA lists it at 395 US dollars or less, including membership, the exam and a practice exam, with student rates from 315 US dollars or less depending on region, as of October 2026.
Is a business analyst internship certificate useful?
An internship certificate proves you completed a real role, which helps on your resume and in background checks. But recruiters value what you did more than the certificate itself. Keep a log of your deliverables, such as user stories written or test cases prepared, and ask for a LinkedIn recommendation. Be careful of paid internship-with-certificate packages, which are often courses rather than real internships.
What should I write in a cover letter for a business analyst internship?
Keep it under 150 words. Name the role and company, mention your degree and college, describe one relevant project with a concrete result, explain why the company's product or domain interests you, share your portfolio link and state your availability. Change at least two lines for every company, because recruiters quickly notice generic cover letters copied across many applications.
What should a business analyst internship resume include?
Keep it to one page. Include a short summary, skills such as requirement gathering, user stories, process mapping, Excel, SQL and Jira, and a projects section placed above hobbies. Describe each project with what you built and the result. Add education, any certifications and your LinkedIn and portfolio links. Use keywords from the job description so the resume passes automated screening.
What questions are asked in a business analyst intern interview?
Expect questions about why you want to be a business analyst, the difference between a BRD and an FRD, how to write a user story, what AS-IS and TO-BE processes are, and a basic SQL query such as finding top customers by order value. Interviewers also ask you to walk through your project and explain what you would do differently next time.
What should I learn before a business analyst internship?
In four to six weeks you can cover the BA role, SDLC and Agile basics, requirement gathering, BRDs and user stories, process mapping with AS-IS and TO-BE flows, Excel pivots and lookups, and basic SQL. Finish with a Jira board, a simple Power BI dashboard and one complete portfolio project. This is enough to apply confidently and contribute from your first week.
Can a business analyst internship lead to a full-time job?
Yes. Many companies use internships to find future hires and give pre-placement offers to strong interns. To improve your chances, clarify expectations in week one, own one deliverable end to end, send weekly updates, learn the domain and keep a work log. Around the midpoint, tell your manager directly that you want to convert and ask what you need to show.
How can I identify a fake business analyst internship?
A fake internship usually asks for money, such as a registration, training, certificate or security deposit fee. Other signs include instant selection without an interview, contact only through WhatsApp or Telegram, payment to a personal UPI ID, pressure to pay quickly, vague work with no named mentor, and requests for Aadhaar, PAN or bank details. Verify the company website, recruiter email domain and LinkedIn presence.
Should I pay for a business analyst internship?
No. A genuine employer pays interns or offers an unpaid role, but never charges you to work. Any request for a registration, training, onboarding or certificate fee is a red flag. If you have already lost money to such a scam, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 and file a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal as quickly as possible.
Does Brolly Academy help with business analyst internships?
Yes. Brolly Academy's Business Analyst course page lists internships under experts as part of its placement support, along with BA-focused resume building, LinkedIn optimisation, mock interviews and interview scheduling support.
