Quick answer
YouTube now recommends a custom thumbnail of 3840 × 2160 pixels for videos, in a 16:9 ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels (YouTube Help, October 2026). The popular 1280 × 720 size still works, because it is 16:9 and wider than 640 pixels. Upload a JPG or PNG file. Keep it under 2 MB if you upload from your phone. The desktop limit is 50 MB.
- Recommended size for videos: 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9)
- Recommended size for Shorts: 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16), minimum height 640 pixels
- File formats: JPG or PNG
- File size limit: 2 MB on mobile, 50 MB on desktop
- Who can upload: channels with a verified account
Key takeaways
- The ratio matters more than the exact pixels. Any 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide is accepted for a normal video.
- Bigger is safer. YouTube's own advice is to use the largest image you can, and its current recommendation is 4K (3840 × 2160).
- Mobile uploads have a much smaller limit. A 2 MB cap on phones means a 4K PNG often fails. Export as JPG.
- You must verify your account first. Only verified accounts can upload their own thumbnail image.
- Design for a small phone screen. Many viewers see your thumbnail at a tiny size on a phone, so short text, one face and strong contrast win.
1. What is the correct YouTube thumbnail size in 2026?
Short answer: For a regular video, YouTube Help recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Use JPG or PNG. The file limit is 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop (YouTube Help, October 2026).
For years, almost every guide said "1280 × 720". That was the old standard, and many tools still open at that size. But the current YouTube Help page on custom thumbnails (October 2026) now recommends a 4K thumbnail: 3840 × 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts. When blogs and YouTube disagree, follow YouTube.
Source: YouTube Help, "Add custom thumbnails", checked October 2026.
Two more rules from the same page are worth knowing:
- Podcast playlists use a square 1:1 thumbnail instead of 16:9. On mobile, podcast thumbnails can be up to 10 MB.
- There is a daily limit on how many custom thumbnails one channel can upload. If you hit it, wait 24 hours and try again.
So is 1280 × 720 wrong now?
No. 1280 × 720 is 16:9 and twice the 640-pixel minimum width, so YouTube accepts it. It is just not the largest option any more. A bigger size stays sharper on TVs and high-resolution screens.
2. YouTube thumbnail size ratio and width and height in pixels
Short answer: The YouTube thumbnail ratio for normal videos is 16:9. That means the width is 16 parts and the height is 9 parts. Common 16:9 sizes are 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440 and 3840 × 2160 pixels. All of them work.
The aspect ratio is the shape of the image. If your image has a different shape, YouTube has to fit it into a wide box, which can leave black bars or cut off the edges. Every size below is exactly 16:9.
Is 1920 × 1080 good for a YouTube thumbnail?
Yes. 1920 × 1080 is a perfect 16:9 size, well above the minimum width. A frame from a 1080p video is already the right shape. Just check the file size before you upload from a phone.
To work out any 16:9 height, divide the width by 16 and multiply by 9. A width of 1600 pixels gives 900 pixels. Crop to reach the shape; never stretch.
3. YouTube thumbnail size in inches, cm and Photoshop settings
Short answer: YouTube only cares about pixels, not inches or centimetres. If your software asks for inches, 1280 × 720 pixels at 72 PPI works out to about 17.78 × 10 inches (about 45.16 × 25.4 cm). The simplest fix is to set your document unit to pixels.
Inches and centimetres are print units, so the inch size changes with the PPI (pixels per inch) you choose. These are simple calculations, not YouTube rules:
Photoshop YouTube thumbnail size settings
In Photoshop or a similar editor, create a new document at 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160 pixels, set units to pixels and colour mode to RGB. PPI does not change how the thumbnail looks on YouTube, so a 1920 × 1080 image looks the same at 72 PPI or 300 PPI.
4. YouTube thumbnail file size limit and formats
Short answer: Upload your thumbnail as a JPG or PNG. The limit is 2 MB when you upload from the mobile app and 50 MB when you upload from a computer (YouTube Help, October 2026).
This spec causes many upload errors. A large PNG made on a phone often fails in the app because of the 2 MB mobile limit.
- JPG gives smaller files. It is the safer choice for photos, faces and phone uploads.
- PNG keeps text and flat graphics crisp, but files are bigger, so it suits computer uploads.
How to reduce a thumbnail under 2 MB
- Export as JPG instead of PNG. This alone usually shrinks the file a lot.
- Lower the JPG quality slightly. Small drops are hard to see on a phone.
- Resize from 3840 × 2160 to 1920 × 1080. It is still sharp and 16:9.
- Upload from a computer, where the limit is 50 MB.
You only need a "thumbnail size converter" if your image is not 16:9. Any free editor can do the same job with a 16:9 crop or a YouTube thumbnail template.
5. Who can upload a custom thumbnail?
Short answer: You need a verified YouTube account. You verify once, with your phone number, and the custom thumbnail option unlocks. Until then, you can only pick one of YouTube's auto-generated options.
YouTube Help (October 2026) says you can choose from auto-generated suggestions, or upload your own image if your account is verified. The help page links to the YouTube verification page, where you get a code on your phone by text or call.
Verification is a one-time step. After that, two limits still apply: a daily cap on thumbnail uploads, which YouTube says can vary by country or region and channel history, and the thumbnail policy. Repeated violations can remove your custom thumbnail access for 30 days (see the policy section below).

6. How to upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube
Short answer: On a computer, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, open the video, choose Upload file under Thumbnail and click Save. On Android or iPhone, use the YouTube Studio app or the YouTube app, tap Edit thumbnail, then Custom thumbnail, then Save.
On a computer (YouTube Studio)
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content from the left menu.
- Click the video you want to edit.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file and choose your image.
- Click Save.
You can also click Get suggestions to see auto-generated options. YouTube Help (October 2026) also describes Ask Studio, where you can ask for thumbnail suggestions based on your video's transcript and then refine them with follow-up prompts.
On Android or iPhone (YouTube Studio app)
- Open the YouTube Studio app and tap Content.
- Select the video.
- Tap the edit icon, then Edit thumbnail.
- Tap Custom thumbnail and pick an image from your phone.
- Confirm, tap Select, then tap Save.
In the main YouTube app, the path is your profile picture, Your videos, More, Edit, then Edit thumbnail. Remember the 2 MB mobile limit. After you save, the new thumbnail can take some time to show everywhere on YouTube, so do not panic if the old one appears for a while.

7. YouTube Shorts thumbnail size
Short answer: For Shorts, YouTube recommends a 9:16 vertical thumbnail of 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and you need a verified account (YouTube Help, October 2026).
Option 1: upload a custom Shorts thumbnail on a computer
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Go to Content and select the Shorts tab at the top.
- Open the Short.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file, then Save.
Option 2: pick a frame from your Short in the app
The Create YouTube Shorts help page (October 2026) says you can choose a frame from your Short as its thumbnail before and after you upload. To change it later, go to Your videos in the YouTube app, tap More on the Short, then Edit. You can add text and filters. YouTube notes that this frame edit works only in the YouTube app, not in the Studio app, and you cannot go back to earlier edits once you finish one.
Watch out: vertical videos with a 16:9 thumbnail
If you upload a vertical video but give it a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube Help (October 2026) says it will be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages. So match the thumbnail shape to the video shape: 16:9 for landscape videos and 9:16 for Shorts.
8. YouTube banner, profile picture and watermark sizes
Short answer: Upload a channel banner of 2560 × 1440 pixels (minimum 2048 × 1152, maximum 6 MB) and keep text and logos inside the central 1235 × 338 pixel safe area. Your profile picture renders at 98 × 98 pixels and can be up to 15 MB (YouTube Help, October 2026).
Your thumbnails, banner and profile picture should look like one brand. Here are the official sizes from YouTube's Manage your channel branding page (October 2026).
Your banner is cropped differently on TVs, computers and phones, and phones show only a narrow strip in the middle. Keep your channel name and any text inside the 1235 × 338 pixel safe area.
To change any of these, sign in to YouTube Studio, go to Customization, then Profile, click Change next to the image, adjust it, click Done and then Publish.
9. YouTube thumbnail design tips that improve clicks
Short answer: Use a clear face or subject, three to five big words at most, strong colour contrast and one main idea. Check how it looks at a tiny size on a phone, and keep text away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length.
The right size gets your thumbnail accepted. The right design gets it clicked.
- Keep text short and bold. Use a few large words that add to your title, in a thick, simple font. If you squint at it on your phone, it is too small.
- Use faces and emotion. A close-up face with a clear emotion draws the eye. Faceless channels can use one strong object or a before-and-after.
- Create strong contrast. Light text on dark, or dark on light. Add an outline or a solid shape behind text on busy backgrounds.
- Follow the rule of thirds. Put the subject on one third and the text on the opposite side.
- Respect the safe areas. YouTube shows the video length in the bottom-right corner, and progress bars can cover the bottom edge. Keep key text and faces in the top two thirds.
- Preview it on a phone. Shrink your design to fingernail size. If you cannot tell what the video is about in one second, simplify.
- Match the thumbnail to the title. They work as a pair. Our YouTube SEO guide explains how titles, descriptions and thumbnails work together.
- Build a recognisable style. Reuse two or three colours, one font and a similar layout so returning viewers spot your videos.
10. Free tools to make a YouTube thumbnail
Short answer: You can make a good thumbnail for free with Adobe Express, Canva or the suggestions inside YouTube Studio. Adobe Express says it has a free plan and opens a YouTube thumbnail canvas at 1280 × 720 pixels by default (Adobe Express website, October 2026).
You do not need paid software to start.
A simple routine: take a few clear photos while filming, open a 16:9 template at 1920 × 1080 or larger, add three to five bold words, check it at a tiny size and export as JPG. For a wider list of tools for marketing and content work, see our roundup of digital marketing tools.
11. A/B test your thumbnails in YouTube Studio
Short answer: YouTube Studio lets you test up to 3 thumbnails, titles, or title and thumbnail pairs on one video. It shows the option with the highest watch time to everyone when the test ends, usually within two weeks. It works only on a computer and needs advanced features (YouTube Help, October 2026).
YouTube first launched thumbnail testing as "Test & compare". The current A/B test titles & thumbnails help page (October 2026) describes the newer version.
How to start a test
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Upload a new video, or open an existing one from Content.
- Under Thumbnail (or in the Title box), click A/B Testing.
- Choose Title only, Thumbnail only or Title and thumbnail.
- Upload up to 3 options and click Done.
How YouTube picks a winner
YouTube picks the winner by watch time, not click-through rate, so a thumbnail that gets clicks but makes people leave quickly will not win. With no clear winner, YouTube keeps the first option you uploaded. Changing the title or thumbnail mid-test stops the test.
You cannot test Shorts, videos made for kids, mature-audience or private videos, scheduled live streams, or Premieres until they become regular long videos.
Testing is one of the best habits for growing a channel. For more growth habits, read our guide on how to grow a YouTube channel.
12. YouTube thumbnail policy: what gets removed
Short answer: Thumbnails must follow YouTube's Community Guidelines. Misleading thumbnails, sexual content, graphic violence and vulgar language are not allowed. Breaking the rules can lead to removal, a strike, loss of custom thumbnails for 30 days or channel termination.
The YouTube thumbnails policy (October 2026) applies to thumbnails and also to other images on YouTube, such as banners, profile pictures and posts.
What is not allowed
- Misleading thumbnails that make viewers think they will see something that is not in the video
- Impersonation of a person, brand or channel, including using AI to copy someone's face or voice to suggest they endorse you
- Sexual content, including nudity and sexualised poses
- Violent or graphic images meant to shock or disgust
- Vulgar or lewd language
What happens if you break the rules
- Mild cases: YouTube may age-restrict the video or remove the thumbnail without a strike. You can then upload a new one.
- First violation: usually a warning with no penalty. You can take a policy training so the warning expires after 90 days.
- Further violations: the thumbnail is removed and a strike may be issued. Three strikes within 90 days can lead to channel termination.
- Repeat thumbnail offences: YouTube Help says you can lose custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days.
The simple rule: show something that really happens in the video. Clickbait that disappoints viewers also hurts watch time, which is what YouTube's own A/B tests reward.
13. Common YouTube thumbnail mistakes
Short answer: The most common mistakes are the wrong shape, files too big for mobile, tiny text, cluttered designs, text under the duration badge and thumbnails that do not match the video.
- Wrong shape. A square or vertical image on a long video gets bars or cropping. Use 16:9.
- Stretching to fit. Crop instead; stretched faces look odd.
- A large PNG from your phone. The mobile limit is 2 MB. Export as JPG.
- A tiny image. Below 640 pixels wide is rejected, and small images look blurry on TVs.
- Full sentences and clutter. A few words and one main subject are enough.
- Covering the bottom-right corner. That is where the video length appears.
- Misleading images. They can lead to removal or strikes, and viewers leave quickly.
- Never checking results. Watch impressions click-through rate in YouTube Analytics and test new versions.

Frequently asked questions
What is the YouTube thumbnail size?
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for regular video thumbnails, in a 16:9 ratio (YouTube Help, October 2026). The minimum width is 640 pixels, so 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 are also accepted. Use JPG or PNG, and stay under 2 MB when uploading from a phone.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size ratio?
The ratio is 16:9 for regular videos, a wide landscape shape where the width is 16 parts and the height is 9 parts. Shorts use a vertical 9:16 ratio and podcast playlists use a square 1:1 ratio. The right ratio stops black bars and unwanted cropping.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in pixels?
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts. The minimum is 640 pixels wide for videos and 640 pixels tall for Shorts. Other 16:9 sizes that work well are 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080 and 2560 × 1440.
Is 1280 × 720 still the right YouTube thumbnail size?
Yes, 1280 × 720 still works. It is 16:9 and twice the 640-pixel minimum width, so YouTube accepts it. It is simply no longer the largest option, because YouTube Help now recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels. Bigger sizes look sharper on TVs and large screens.
Can I use 1920 × 1080 for a YouTube thumbnail?
Yes. 1920 × 1080 is an exact 16:9 size and well above the 640-pixel minimum width. A frame from a 1080p video already has the right shape. Before you upload from a phone, check that the exported file is under the 2 MB mobile limit.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in inches?
YouTube uses pixels, not inches. If your software asks for inches, 1280 × 720 pixels at 72 PPI is about 17.78 × 10 inches, and at 300 PPI about 4.27 × 2.4 inches. The easiest option is to set your document units to pixels.
What is the YouTube thumbnail size in cm?
A 1280 × 720 pixel thumbnail at 72 PPI is about 45.16 × 25.4 cm, and at 300 PPI about 10.84 × 6.1 cm. These are only conversions, because YouTube measures thumbnails in pixels. PPI does not change how the thumbnail looks on YouTube.
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?
It depends on where you upload. YouTube Help says the limit is 2 MB for video thumbnails from mobile and 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails from a computer. Podcast thumbnails can be 10 MB on mobile. If a file is too big, export as JPG.
Should a YouTube thumbnail be JPG or PNG?
Both are accepted. JPG makes smaller files, so it is safer for photos, faces and phone uploads under the 2 MB limit. PNG keeps text and flat graphics crisp, but files are larger, so it suits computer uploads, where the limit is 50 MB.
Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?
Usually because your account is not verified. YouTube only lets verified accounts upload their own image. Other reasons include a file over 2 MB on mobile, a format other than JPG or PNG, an image under 640 pixels wide, or hitting the daily thumbnail upload limit.
How do I verify my YouTube account for custom thumbnails?
Use YouTube's verification page. You enter your phone number, receive a code by text or call, and type it in. Your account is then verified and the custom thumbnail option unlocks. Until then, you can only choose from YouTube's auto-generated thumbnail options.
How do I change a thumbnail on YouTube from my phone?
Open the YouTube Studio app, tap Content, select the video, tap the edit icon and choose Edit thumbnail. Tap Custom thumbnail, pick an image, tap Select and then Save. The YouTube app has the same option under Your videos. Keep the file under 2 MB.
What is the YouTube Shorts thumbnail size?
YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts, in a vertical 9:16 ratio, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be uploaded in YouTube Studio on a computer with a verified account. In the YouTube app, you choose a frame instead.
Can I add a custom thumbnail to YouTube Shorts from my phone?
Not as an uploaded image. Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. On your phone, you can choose a frame from your Short before or after uploading and add text or filters. To change it later, use Your videos, More, then Edit.
Why does my vertical video show a different thumbnail on the home page?
If a vertical video has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, YouTube replaces it with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages. The shapes do not match. Use a 9:16 thumbnail for vertical videos and a 16:9 thumbnail for landscape videos.
What is the YouTube banner size?
The recommended banner size is 2560 × 1440 pixels, with a minimum of 2048 × 1152 pixels, in a 16:9 ratio and 6 MB or smaller. Keep your channel name and any text inside the central 1235 × 338 pixel safe area, because phones show only a narrow middle strip.
What is the YouTube profile picture size?
Your profile picture renders at 98 × 98 pixels, so it appears very small. You can upload a JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG file up to 15 MB, but animated GIFs are not allowed. Use a simple logo or clear face that stays recognisable at that size.
How much text should a YouTube thumbnail have?
Keep it to about three to five words. Many viewers see thumbnails at a tiny size on a phone, so long sentences become unreadable. Use a bold, simple font with strong contrast, and let the text add to your title instead of repeating it.
Where should I avoid placing text on a YouTube thumbnail?
Avoid the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length. Progress bars can also cover the bottom edge. Keep your main text and faces in the top two thirds of the image, and use the rule of thirds to keep the layout balanced.
What is the best free tool to make a YouTube thumbnail?
Adobe Express and Canva are popular choices for beginners. Adobe Express says it has a free plan and opens a 1280 × 720 thumbnail canvas by default. Canva has many YouTube thumbnail templates, though some are marked Pro and need a paid plan.
How do I A/B test thumbnails on YouTube?
In YouTube Studio on a computer, open your video, click A/B Testing under Thumbnail, choose Thumbnail only, upload up to 3 options and click Done. You need advanced features. The option with the highest watch time wins, usually within two weeks. Shorts cannot be tested.
Can a misleading thumbnail get my channel a strike?
Yes. YouTube does not allow thumbnails that make viewers expect something that is not in the video. A first violation is usually a warning, but further violations can bring strikes, and three strikes within 90 days can lead to termination of the channel.
How long does a new YouTube thumbnail take to show?
A new thumbnail can take some time to appear everywhere on YouTube after you save it, so you may still see the old image for a while. If it has not updated, open the video in YouTube Studio and check that your save went through.
