About Red Team Training

A red team exercise evaluates a defined security objective through a planned, authorized scenario. Success is not simply the number of vulnerabilities found. The team needs to show which controls worked, where defenders lacked visibility and what practical improvement should follow. This course emphasizes that connection between testing and defence.

Penetration testing commonly validates technical weaknesses within a scope. Red teaming uses a threat-informed objective to assess the wider response. Purple-team collaboration brings testers and defenders together to improve detection. This course uses safe lab exercises, not covert activity against real organizations.

Use MITRE ATT&CK red teaming guidance alongside the relevant modules. The practice examples on this page are original teaching scenarios, not claims of vendor approval or live client work.

Who Should Join?

This is a specialist path. Networking, Windows and Linux fundamentals, basic identity concepts and prior security-testing knowledge are recommended. New learners should consider the existing ethical hacking or VAPT course first.

Red Team Syllabus: 8 Practical Modules

Each module connects a concept to an exercise and an output you can explain. Work through the foundations before attempting the integrated project.

1. Objectives and rules of engagement

Define a fictional business objective, explicit authorization, allowed systems and stop conditions. Assign an exercise controller and escalation contacts. Produce a rules-of-engagement document before discussing any simulation activity.

2. Threat intelligence and ATT&CK mapping

Read a public threat description and map relevant behaviour to a small set of ATT&CK concepts. Distinguish observed intelligence from assumptions. Explain why the selected behaviour matters to the fictional organization rather than copying an entire threat group.

3. Lab architecture and safety controls

Design a disposable, isolated environment with synthetic accounts, logging and known recovery points. Define how the exercise will be paused and restored. Keep production credentials, personal data and external targets outside the lab.

4. Identity and trust-boundary review

Map the relationships between test users, hosts and permitted resources. Identify where access should be constrained and which events should be recorded. Use diagram-led exercises to explain risk without changing real enterprise permissions.

5. Controlled adversary simulation

Run agreed benign lab actions that represent selected behaviours. Record the objective, timestamp, expected telemetry and actual result. The focus is validation and observation, not destructive activity, concealed persistence or bypassing production defences.

6. Detection coverage and purple teaming

Compare the exercise timeline with available events and analyst alerts. Separate missing data from a weak rule or a delayed response. Discuss improvements with the defender role and repeat a safe test after an approved adjustment.

7. Exercise communication and reporting

Prepare an evidence-led narrative for technical and business audiences. State the authorization, scope, observed control gaps and limitations. Avoid presenting hypothetical attack paths as confirmed compromises.

8. Remediation validation and lessons learned

Turn findings into accountable actions and a retest plan. Measure whether visibility or response improved in the lab. Close the exercise with a cleanup check, an agreed handover and lessons that can inform a future scenario.

Practical Skills You Will Develop

Use the exercises to build an explanation as well as a result. You should be able to show what you did, how you checked it and where the limits are.

Lab architecture and safety controlsDesign a disposable, isolated environment with synthetic accounts, logging and known recovery points.

Identity and trust-boundary reviewMap the relationships between test users, hosts and permitted resources.

Controlled adversary simulationRun agreed benign lab actions that represent selected behaviours.

Detection coverage and purple teamingCompare the exercise timeline with available events and analyst alerts.

Tools and Lab Requirements

Practice only on systems you own or have explicit permission to use. The course outline uses isolated labs and synthetic data. Agree the software versions, access period, hardware requirements and any licence or cloud charges before enrolling. Never upload employer logs, credentials or personal evidence to a public tool.

ATT&CK resourcesUse the public framework to describe behaviours and organize a limited exercise.

Isolated lab and telemetryUse synthetic systems with permission, monitoring, snapshots and a clear stop mechanism.

Exercise documentationMaintain rules of engagement, an event timeline, detection evidence and a cleanup record.

Keep MITRE adversary emulation plans available when checking an exercise. Use the instructions for your installed version and authorized access level.

Your Learning Roadmap

Build confidence in stages. Practice time and your starting knowledge matter as much as the number of scheduled sessions.

1. Set up and understandCheck the prerequisites and lab access. Complete the first two modules and explain the basic workflow in your own words.

2. Build and investigateWork through the middle modules. Keep notes of errors, what you tried and the evidence that supported a fix.

3. Test and presentComplete the final modules and an integrated scenario. Present your output, validation and a short handover guide.

3 Practical Project Scenarios

These are teaching scenarios using approved lab systems and synthetic data. They are not claims about live client work or previous student results.

Threat-informed exercise planCreate an authorized scenario with a business objective, selected behaviours and measurable defensive expectations.

Purple-team validationCompare safe simulation events with the lab detection record and document the visibility gaps.

Executive debriefPresent verified observations, limitations and a prioritized improvement plan without exaggerating impact.

How the Skills Work in Practice

A fictional organization wants to know whether its team notices unusual access to a protected training resource. Define a benign test action, the expected event and the analyst decision before beginning.

If the action is logged but never reaches the analyst, the finding is a visibility or workflow gap. That is different from claiming that the underlying resource was compromised. The report should preserve that distinction.

Where These Skills Are Used

These skills support red team practitioner, purple team analyst, security validation consultant. Employers combine technical knowledge with careful documentation, communication and responsible access. Your lab portfolio should show decisions, evidence and limitations, not claim that a training exercise was a live client engagement.

Interview and Portfolio Preparation

Prepare evidence you can discuss clearly. Label practice work as training work and do not present a teaching scenario as paid client experience.

Explain a projectDescribe the requirement, your decisions, the result and one limitation. Be ready to answer what you would change for a real deployment.

Show useful evidenceKeep approved files, test results and a concise README or runbook. Remove secrets and private information before sharing a portfolio.

Discuss support servicesAsk the academy which resume, mock-interview or job-search services are included in your batch. Placement assistance is not a job or salary guarantee.

Career Planning and Salary Expectations

Salary depends on the role, prior experience, location and the employer. A tool course alone does not establish a salary band. Compare recent job descriptions, required experience and responsibilities rather than relying on a headline income promise.

Meet the Trainer Through a Demo

Discuss the assigned trainer's relevant experience during a free demo. Ask how they would explain a practical red team problem and review your lab evidence.

Relevant experienceAsk for examples of work with Red Team that can be discussed without revealing confidential client information.
